Below are all the top players to play for the North American Soccer League
between 1967 and 1984. Many top stars played for the league, as well as
other solid, if less world-famous individuals. An asterisk (*) indicates
players with World Cup experience, and a karat (^) indicates players with
International Caps to their credit. NASL stats include games played and
goals scored.

*BANKS, GORDON (Engl.) Goalkeeper. Played in England's World Cup
winning team of 1966, and again in 1970. Born 12/30/1939. Inaugural
member of the International Football Hall of Hame.
Credited w/ one of the all-time great saves in World Cup history on a
header by Pele in 1-0 loss to Brazil. Played for Chesterfield,
Leicester City and Stoke City in the 1960s and 1970s. His English
playing career was ended during his time at Stoke after he lost sight in
one eye in a car accident. He made a comeback for a time when playing
in the NASL in the late 1970s. As well as the "Pele save", he is also
remembered for some brilliant goalkeeping in a League Cup semi-final
with West Ham United.

After starting his career with Carlisle United in England, Peter Beardsley
came to Vancouver Whitecaps in 1981 and for three seasons before being
signed by Newcastle United following the 1983 season. Beardsley's career
finally took off and he subsequently went on to play for England in the
1986 World Cup and was later signed by Liverpool.

103 Caps. Born. 9/11/1945. Inaugural member of the International
Soccer Hall of Fame.
Franz Beckenbauer was one of the best players ever to play in the NASL.
He teamed up with Pele and Giorgio Chinaglia in 1977 and had an
immediate impact on both the Cosmos and the entire league, giving the
league much credibility. He scored in his first game to lead the Cosmos
to a 4-2 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on 5/29/77. He scored 23 goals
105 games, and was the NASL MVP in 1977.
Beckenbauer had completed an oustanding career with Bayern Munich where
he had played a significant role in building them into a West German
powerhouse, winning the European cup three straight seasons (1974, 75,
76), and earning European Footballer of the year awards in 1972 and
1976. His success extended to the National Team where he earned 103
caps, and played in the 1966, 1970 and 1974, with the 1966 and 1974
teams making the finals (1974 was a 2-1 victory over Holland).
His impact on the Cosmos was evident, as the team struggled during his
two years in Hamburg (1981-82). They rebounded when he returned to the
Cosmos for the 1983 season. Soon after retirement, he was named coach
of the West german national team, where he took the team to the 1986
world cup finals, and returned the team to the WC in 1990.

George Best was one of the first major international stars signed by
NASL after Pele, and helped focus world attention on the league. He
came out of semi-retirement after a long and successful career with
Manchester United (1961-1975), and Northern Ireland, for whom he was
capped 37 times. He played on ManU's European Cup winning team of 1968.
He also had had brief stints with Dunstable, Cork Celtic, Stockport
County and La Coruona (Spain) in 1975, and stints during his NASL Career
with Fulham (1976-77), and Hibernian (1978). His career with the NASL
was colorful and successful, although he never stayed in one place too
long.

BEST, John (Engl.). Defender. Born Liverpool England, 7/11/1940.
One of the pioneers of the NASL, John Best first played with
Philadelphia Spartsn of the United Soccer Association, moving to
Cleveland after the league merger. He had a brief career with the
Tranmere rovers in 1960 (7 games). After his retirement in 1973, Best
went on to coach the Seattle Sounders for their first three seasons,
then moving onto the Vancouver Whitecaps as general manager, where he
hired Tony waiters as head coach. Waiters led the Whitecaps to several
successful seasons.

The All-time NASL assists leader, with 147 assists in 203 games over his
7 seasons with the New york Cosmos, Vlad was the finest midfielder in
the history of the NASL. A solid mainstay of the cosmos during their
banner years, Bugicevic was a central player in the cosmos's Soccer Bowl
champion teams of 1978, 1980 and 1982, played in the final in 1981, and
was named to five First All-Star teams. He scored in his first game,
during the Cosmos's 7-0 hammering of a hapless Ft. Lauderdale.
Vladislav Bogicevic made his pro debut at age 15 for Red star Belgrade
and during his 13 years with the club, played 503 games during which he
helped the team win five League Championships. He was capped 47 times
for the National Team, playing in all but one of their 1974 World Cup
matches.

^BRADLEY, Gordon (Engl./USA). Midfielder. 1 Cap. Born 11/23/1938.
Gordon Bradley had a successful career in england with Bradford Park,
Carlisle United, among others between 1955 and 1960. He made 130
appearances for Carlisle, scoring three goals. His career had started
at age 16, but he was injured and forced out for two seasons. He was
signed by the Generals in 1968, and played another year with Baltimore,
before latching onto the Cosmos as player-coach, from 1971-1975. He is
best known as a successful coach, one of the most popular the NASL ever
knew. He was replaced as a player when Pele signed, but continued to
coach through 1977 (Soccer Boel '77) with a brief interruption by Ken
Furphy in 1976). He went on to coach the wshington Diplomats from 1978
to 1981. Bradley also coached the US National Team in 1973, and made
one international appearance for the US against Israel in Beersheba.

A much traveled player, Named by his peers as North American Player of the
Year and was Goalie of the Year in "Soccer America" poll, honors earned by
breaking the all-time league record with 15 shutouts, with a remarkable 0.91
goals against average. Often a substitute or backup, he found a starting
role in 1980 with the Seattle Sounders in 1980.

^CHILD, Paul (Engl.) Forward. 2 caps (for the US). Born 8/12/1952.
One of the most prolific goalscorers in NASL history, Paul child had
originally come to the NASL on loan from Aston Villa for whom he had
never actually played a game. He made a name for himself in the NASL,
especially for the San jose Earthjquakes, where during six seasons, he
was named to the NASL first All-star team in 1972 and 1974. He led the
league in scoring in 1974 with 15 goals and 36 points, was 10th in
scoring in 1976, and 9th in 1977. He managed to earn two caps playing
for the US, even though he was not a citizen at the time. He is 5th
all-time goal scorer for the NASL, and 6th in total scoring, with 102
goals in 241 games.

Italian Giorgio Chinaglia scored more goals than any player in NASL
history, earning 193 goals in 213 regular season games, and 50 goals in
43 playoff games for the Comos in his 7 year North American career. His
career started with Swansea in the Welsh league in 1964-65, continuing
to Italy 3rd Div. Massese and Internapoli before being signed to Lazio
in 1969-70, where he had a distinguished career before being signed by
the Cosmos in 1976.
During his NASL career, he because one of the league's most recognizable
players, being the NASL's leading scorer in 1976, 1978, 1980, 1981, and
1982. He was NASL MVP in 1981, and lead the Cosmos to four
championships in 1977, 1978, 1980 and 1982. Later in his NASL career,
Chinaglia obtained US citizenship and was able to count as American to
help meet the Cosmos USA player quota. (1981?). A highlight was the
1980 playoffs where he scored 18 goals in 7 games, including seven goals
in one game against Tulsa. In late 1983 early 1984 he bought a chunk
of the Cosmos. In 1985 after the NASL had gone out of buisness he tried
to keep the Cosmos alive with a series of exhibition matches.
Fifteen were organized but only three ended up being played before he
pulled the plug as he was losing too much money.
Chinaglia also had 14 caps with the Italian National tea, playing in the
1974 world cup.

Inaugural member of the International Hall of Fame.
Cruyff was one of the greatest players to ever play the game. Although
his NASL stint was brief, his career in Europe was outstanding. He
began his career with the Ajax Amsterdam club at just TEN years of age,
making his 1st-team debut at 17. He had a long successful career with
Ajax Amsterdam, leading them to three consecutive European Club finals
in 1971, 1972 and 1973, as well as the World Clup Championship in 1972.
He also had playing stints with Barcelona and Feyenoord. He played on
Netherland's World Cup team, which made it to the finals before losing
to West Germany 2-1.
His NASL Debut against Rochester saw him score two of the three goals in
their 3-0 win. He left NASL shortly into the 1981 season with the
Diplomats, in part due to his intense dislike of artificial turf. He
returned to Ajax and had a stint in feyenoord before returning to Ajax
to coach. he let Ajax to the 1987 Cup Winners Cup before eventually
moving to Spain.

A three-time world-cup participant, scoring five goals each in the 1970
and 1978 world cups. His outstanding play in the 1978 cup attracted the
attention of the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers where he promptly became a
franchise player, 7th in league scoring, and named to the 2nd All-Star
team. In 1980, he scored four goals in 7 games, leading Ft. Lauderdale
to the Sccer Bowl. In 1981, he scored gour goals against the Aztecs in a
July game, with three coming within seven minutes and 14 seconds.
Cubillas began his career with Alianza Lima in Peru before moving to
Switzerland for Basale, and then Porto, Portugal. He had a brief return
to Alianza before signing with Ft. Lauderdale. He missed 16 games of
the 1982 season to play in World Cup 82.

One of the best US players ever produced to this time, Rick spent
seven seasons with the Cosmos, where unlike many players, he had
significant playing time. He left Santa Clara University, where
he had spent one season, to join the Cosmos in 1978. He was
1979 NASL North American player of the year, and played in the
Cosmos 1980 and 1982 Soccer Bowl teams. In 1982, he represented
the US in the FIFA World All-Star game which followed the 1982
World Cup. He earned 30 caps for the US National team.

Mike England helped establish the Seattle Sounders as one of the top teams in the
NASL. He was selected to the first all-star team four times (1975, 1976, 1977,
1978), and led the Sounders to Soccer Bowl 1977).
Mike began his pro career with Blackburn Rovers, before transferring to Tottenham
in 1966, where he played 300 games and won a FA Cup-winners medal in 1967. He
also played a season with Cardiff City in 1976 after his initial season with the
Sounders.
In 1976, he played for Team America in the BiCentennial Tournament against England, Brazil and Italy. After his retirement, he became manager for the Welsh National team where he had previous earned 44 caps.

Born in Mozambique, on 1/25/42. Inaugural member of the International
Soccer Hall of Fame.
Although Eusebio's NASL career was relatively minor, his influence in
the league was considerable, being one of the best players the world has
seen.
Eusebio won the 1962 European Cup-winner's medal and three runner's up.
His long career with Benefica of the Portugese league included five
consecutive league-leading scoring performances, from 1964-1968. He
received numerous "golden boots" during this time.
His success extended to the Portugese national team, where he capped 64
games, the first in 1961 at the tender age of 19.
Eusebio made his NASL debut in 1975 with the Boston Minutemen but was
soon signed by the Toronto Metros where he distinguished himself with a
40 point season in 1976, and scored in Soccer Bowl '76 to lead the team
to a 3-0 victory over the Minnesota kicks. He signed with the Las Vegas
Qucksilver for 1977, but injuries ended his career before the season's
end.

Karl Heinz Granitza had a long successful career in the NASL, playing
for the Chicago Sting for 7 seasons, and finishing third in all-time
goals (128), and second in all-time assists (101). despite his goal-
scoring prowess, he was never named to an NASL All-Star team. Purchased
from Hertha Berlin, he played with Chicago until the demise of the
league in 1984. He led the Sting to to Soccer Bowl victories, the first
over the New york cosmos in 1981, and the second in 1984 in a two-game
series against the Toronto Blizzard.
Early in his career, Granitza played for Rochling Volklingen, DJK
Gutersloh, TSG Eintracht Dortmund and VfB 08 Lunen before signing with
Hertha Berlin. He was originally a central striker, but moved to
midfield later in his career. Although he was never a superstar in
Europe, his contributions to the NASL were far more significant than
that of many of the superstars who came to the league for fairly short
stints.

HECTOR, KEVIN (Engl.). Striker. Bradford Park. 2 Caps. Born 11/2/1944.
Started at the now-defunct Bradford Park Avenue in the 1960s, signed by
Tim Ward for Derby County just before Ward was fired and Brian Clough
was hired. Was a perennial favourite for Derby County, as a brilliant
inside forward playing alongside Alan Hinton and John O'Hare. Known as
"King Kevin" or "Zak" by his adoring fans, his many goals were
instrumental to Derby's glory years in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
After spells at various other clubs, including Gresley Rovers!, he
returned for a season at Derby in the 1980s. Hector won two England
caps and will be remembered by many as Sir Alf Ramsey's last-gasp
desperate attempt to beat Poland in the October 1973 World Cup Qualifier
at Wembley. Ramsey sent Hector on for the final two minutes and the
Derby player almost scored the all important winner. Hector played in
the NASL for the Vancouver White Caps in the mid-1970s.

HILL, GORDON (Engl.) Forward. Millwall, Manchester United. Born 4/1/1954.
Played at Millwall 1972-74 and Manchester United. Also played at Derby
County in the late 1970s. While at Manchester United, manager Tommy
Docherty restored the use of orthodox wingers into the English game,
where Hill and Steve Coppell were employed as the wide men.

HINTON, ALAN (Engl.) Forward. Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, Derby County. National Caps. Born 10/6/1942.
Coached the A-Leagues Seattle Sounders through 1995. Affectionately
known by his fans at Derby County as "Gladys" and (in)famous for being
one of the first players to wear white boots in league games!
Was player-coach for his entire NASL career. Coached the Seattle Storm
(WSA) and Tacoma stars (MISL) in the 1980's. Currently owns rights to
the name "Seattle Sounders" and was involved in efforts to bring world cup
to Seattle for 1994, and was instrumental in bringing the new Seattle
Sounders to the APSL, and eventually to land the city a MLS team.

NASL Scoring leader twice in early 70's. Also played cricket for
Bermuda. Now a high scool principal in Bermuda. Was Ass't coach at

Born 6/21/1951.
Is considered one of the most gifted midfielders ever to play
for England. Achieved in early youth nationwide recognition for
his artfulness in sparking Arsenal in '78 to the FA Cup after
144 games with Chelsea.
