Dear Jack,We were so glad to recieve your letter of Nov. 24. It had been over a month since we had heard from you.
We are in Dallas with your mother2 until Jan. 15th. Then we will both start to school. Leo3 is working with Manley4 and will start a revival next week.5
I hope you are well. By the way if you ever want that candy let me know.
I sent Flora a box of baby clothes,6 I guess she wrote you what I sent.
Leo will write when he has time. Manley keeps him pretty busy.7 I do most of the writing now.
My health is improving.8
We still pray for you both.Love,
Annie Ruth & Leo
Notes:
General: It is rather hard to read the stamps on this letter, but I believe it is stamped RETURN TO SENDER. It was in the possession of Joyce Marie Shanahan (daughter of Glenn Leo Shanahan and Annie Ruth Morrison Shanahan) and since Joyce's mother still had the letter one must assume that it never found its way to Jack.
1 Jack Bradford Shanahan, born 16 May 1922 in Dallas, TX; son of Ellen Wilkerson and Dennis Potter Shanahan and brother-in-law to Annie Ruth Morrison Shanahan [wife of Glenn Leo Shanahan].
2 Ellen Wilkerson Shanahan, born 06 May 1884 in Mississippi; daughter of Sarah Elizabeth "Sally" Davis and William Benjamin Wilkerson.
3 Glenn Leo Shanahan, Sr., born 21 Sep 1916 in Dallas, TX; son of Ellen Wilkerson and Dennis Potter Shanahan and brother to Jack Bradford Shanahan [recipient of letter].
4 Manley William Shanahan, born 24 Apr 1904 in Dallas, Tx; son of Ellen Wilkerson and Dennis Potter Shanahan and brother to Jack Bradford Shanahan [recipient of letter].
5 Glenn Leo Shanahan was a Baptist Minister.
6 Flora Eulynn Kuykendall, wife of Jack Bradford Shanahan. The birth date for her and Jack's first born child [Doris Evlyne "Lyne" Shanahan] is not known, but one can assume from this mention of baby clothes that she must have been recently born.
7 Manley Shanahan is known to have owned and operated the ASHCO-SHANAHAN SPORTING GOODS store in 1959; not sure if he started this business as far back as 1944; but this may be where Glenn Leo was working at the time this letter was written.
8 Annie Ruth's mention of her health was with regard to the fact that she had recently borne and lost her first child (a son).
Transcribed on 28 June 2002 by K. L. Rhodes from a scan of original letter emailed to me by Joyce Marie Shanahan.
