Saggar firing is a type of "pit" firing accomplished in a kiln instead of in the ground. These pieces were fired in either my electric or gas kiln (both have been ITC'd -- a refractory coating that protects the kilns). I use a 12x12x24" flue liner, 1" thick as the saggar and fill it with several pieces tumble stacked inside. A kiln shelf is used as a lid. No glazes are applied. Like my pit fire, I use many of the same materials to produce surface color: a little sawdust, straw, copper, salt, string, wire, and steel wool. Some pots may be fired several times to achieve the desired effect. I am always experimenting!
