This section will be under constant construction as I
think of more tidbits to add.
Back Up Your Files! This is something that everybody
should do but people frequently don't. Possibly the main
reason is that either they don't want to spend the money on
a commercial backup solution, or they don't know how to use
the one they have. Backing up by hand is just too time
consuming. It is fairly easy to create a batch file that
will copy the contents of one folder to another and then use
Windows 98/ME scheduling to run that batch file on a regular
basis. Fairly easy to do and very inexpensive. If a program crashes restart your computer. Most of us have received an error
message something like, "The program has performed an
illegal operation and will close", or have a program freeze
and were able to shut the program down from the "Close
Program" Window (Ctrl + Alt + Del). It is a good idea to
restart your computer when this happens. One of the most
frequent causes of problems is when a program tries to use a
section of memory that it shouldn't. This can cause other
programs (or the operating system) to crash without warning.
Restarting your computer will clear any bad data from the
memory. Close many open windows with a single click. If you like to have each folder you
open appear in a new window, you will find times when you
have tons of windows to close at one time. Instead of
clicking on the close window button for each one (button
with an X in it, upper right hand corner of the window),
hold down the shift key when you do. This will close all of
the open windows that were opened from within the window you
are clicking on. Windows ME users, make use of "System Restore" before
loading software! One of the nice features about
Windows ME is something called "System Restore" (Start
menu-Programs-Accessories-System Tools). If you are going to
add a new software product (especially if it is one you
download), go to System Restore and create a restore point
before you install. That way if anything goes wrong
(short of a complete corruption of Windows) you can easily
go back to the way you were before.
