NICARAGUAN YOUTHS MEET WITH CONDOLEZZA RICE —
U. S. SECRETARY OF STATE
Ten secondary students, from nine provinces in Nicaragua, met with
Condoleezza Rice in Washington, DC, in an intent to improve the image
of the United States and to educate American families with the realities
in Latin America. The students participating in this year’s
encounter, called Young Ambassadors, are selected for their knowledge
of the English language, for their work in the community, and have
never traveled abroad. Since 2007 twenty five Nicaraguan students
have participated in this program. This year two fourth year students
from our Alma Mater were selected. They are: Vanely Williams,
and Shawn Clair Sharp. Shawn is the son of Ignacia Sharp
’80. These young ambassadors visited Washington, DC on April
12, 2008
(Taken from El Nuevo Diario - April 18, 2008)
Editor’s Note: It is ironic that Ignacia
Sharp, a teacher in the primary division, was denied a visa to attend
her son’s graduation from college at the very moment that her
son, Shawn Clair Sharp, was meeting with Condoleezza Rice in Washington,
DC.

said Marenco.
In her acceptance speech Miss Lizzie said, “Her wishes have
always been and continue to be the promotion and revitalization of
the Caribbean culture. It is fundamental to create our own Institute
of Culture where cultural activities can be carried out while we learn
about our origins and traditions”.
After the official event, the Caribbean singer and composer, Phillip
Montalvan, interpreted to the rhythm of May Pole the song “Bienvenida
a Managua”, which Miss Lizzie danced with the Mayor.
Miss Lizzie was also invited to participate in the Carnaval de Managua

Dear Steve: Thank you for sending me the Spring 2008 Newsletter.
To read that my book was presented to the School Principal at the
alumni banquet was very emotional. I am humbled.
Through you and Richard’s initiative, Hidden Tomorrows has
re-linked me to my Alma Mater, after being disconnected from her for
such a long time. Now I feel that I am one of the lucky ones who have
found her way back home. I can’t recover lost ground, but I
can surely go on from here.
I have made note of the information found at the end of the Newsletter.
I have your mailing address so you will hear from me,
Thanks again, and have a nice week-end.
