CONGRATULATIONS

The alumni association is proud to salute and congratulate the following alumnae:
Marlyn Henriquez, Class of 1971; she earned her doctorate, PhD, in Spanish from Florida International University (FIU), on April 28, 2003.  Her major was in Latin American Literature, and a minor in Peninsular (Spanish) Literature.

We also salute and congratulate Tania Chavarría Zeledón, class of 1989.  Tania received a degree in Diplomacy and Law from Harvard and Tufts Universities in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in May of 2003.  Tania received her Doctor Juris from the UNAN in Leon, Nicaragua, in 1995.  She is the proud daughter of Prof. Pedro Chavarría, MA. Professor of Spanish at our Alma Mater.
We would also like to congratulate Olivia & Fritz Halsall on the occasion of their 52nd wedding anniversary, and Earl & Carolyn Bryan as they celebrated their 32nd.

RECUPERATING

Dean Hooker, Class of 2001, was one of the crew members injured on the SS Norway earlier this year.  As you are aware there was an explosion in the boiler room which caused the death of eight crew members, and injured others.  We can report that Dean is out of the hospital and is undergoing therapy.  We wish for him a speedy recovery.   He is grandson of Shirley Taylor Campbell.

ALUMNI DUES

In our spring 2003 newsletter we made an appeal to the alumni for your support in instituting a fee of $100.00 per year, or $10.00 per month from each alumnus.  As of this date we have received from six members a grand total of $370.00.  We know that we will be receiving quite a number of contributors at our annual alumni banquet on August 9th.  We feel that by having in place a program of this nature we will be able to help to fund the projects that the Director, Allan Budier, is trying to implement.  It would give us the flexibility of helping both sections, Primary and Secondary, making our Alma Mater the finest in Nicaragua.  The educational systems in the entire county are in need of help.  To give you an idea how deplorable the situation is let me share with you a report that was published in La Prensa on June 26, 2003.
According to the Minister of Education, Silvio de Franco:
   -  18.7% of the population is illiterate
   -  823,000 children of school age do not access to school
   -  36.98% (981,478) have not completed primary school
   -  29% of the schools do not have access to drinking water
   -  32% of the schools do not have electricity
   -  75% of the schools do not have the basic infrastructure for a quality education
   -  And only 4.7% of the population is involved in higher education.

Your contributions can be made payable to the Alumni Assoc. Colegio Moravo, and mail to Steve Benedict, 1730 SW 85 Ter, Miramar, FL 33025.

NEWS FROM THE COLEGIO

During the month of June new rest rooms for the girls were inaugurated.  The cost of this project was $10,000, based on the current exchange rates.  The Colegio expects to pay this off in 18 months...

An overhead projector was purchased to aid the teachers and students, and new desks and chairs were purchased for the computer lab.  In addition, two air conditioners were also purchased for the computer lab and the physics and chemistry lab.  We are hoping that ENITEL (Telephone Company) will install those other lines for internet to be offered to the students and eventually to the public.

FUTURE PROJECTS:
Building rest rooms exclusively for the boys.

Build a water tower to enhance the water supply.

Remodeling of the library.  We need a special budget to purchase books, etc.  This is urgent!

Engineer Samuel Omier, an alumnus, is working on a design to complement the main entrance to the Elizabeth Marx Building, functionally, to shelter people from the rain.  Sammy is the son of Dr. Cyril Omier.

CONDOLENCES

We extend our most profound condolences to the family of Jasper Casis.  Jasper passed away on April 22, 2003, in Miami, Florida.  We also extend our condolences to the family and friends of Joel Downs.  Joel was a member of the first class of bachilleres, the class of 1951.  Joel was a great athlete, and a friend of many.   He passed away in Bilwi, Nicaragua, during the month of April. Jasper and Joel will be greatly missed.
