Paxeti/Paxetti/Paxety/Pasety/Persity/Pacheti/Pacetty/Pacetti
The history of the Minorcans, Italians and Greeks in Florida began in the eighteenth century when Andrew Turnbull, an enterprising Scots physician and former British Consul at Smyrna in Asia Minor, acquired thousands of acres of land from the British Government (British Period: 1763-1783) in order to establish an indigo plantation there (Dr. Andrew Turnbull and the New Smyrna Colony of Florida, by Carita Doggett, FL: Drew Press 1919). He named the area in Florida - New Smyrna.
In 1768, Turnbull collected about 1,403 people from the Mediterranean to colonize and work on his project. One hundred ten of these were Italians recruited in the port city of Livorno, Italy. They were ensconced at Mahon, Minorca, the second largest of the Balearic Islands off the coast of Spain. For eight months, Turnbull sailed the Mediterranean and Aegean seeking Greeks and others, although the majority who signed on for his venture were Minorcans (The Minorcans Of Florida: Their History, Language & Culture, by Philip D. Rasico, New Smyrna Beach: Luthers 1990). In the interim, several Italian men married Minorcan women.
On 17 March 1768, Andres Paxeti married Gertrudis Pons in Mahon, Minorca: "ANDREAS PATCETTI, adolescens, cum GERTRUDIE Bora. y PONS" (Diocesan Archives, Ciudadela, Minorca, Book 7 Folio 63 - transcribed by head archivist, Fr. Fernando Marti Camps for: Pacetty Lineage, by Marguerite Marreé Mathews 1995).
This was the largest group of settlers that had migrated to the New World up to that time. After four months at sea, the eight ships reached St. Augustine, and later, arrived at Los Mosquitos Inlet (New Smyrna: An Eighteenth Century Greek Odyssey, by E. P. Panagopoulos, MA: Holy Cross Orthodox Press 1978). First priority was to clear the land of pines, live oaks, cabbage palm, palmetto shrub, and, drain the marsh. Conditions were wretched and never improved: Unbearable heat and humidity; scant time to gather food; inadequate clothing; palm-thatched huts for living quarters; disgusting stench of indigo culture; miserable sanitation; disease; unending planting and tending crops; cruel treatment (Minorcans In Florida, by Jane Quinn, St. Augustine: Mission Press 1975). There were a few who had negotiated written contracts, some were oral. All fell under the Indentured Servant Law, to serve six to eight years, the end of which they were to be freed, with compensation of money and a bit of land. After nine years of exploitation, deprivation and broken promises, Turnbull's colony failed and the entire group of Minorcans, Italians and Greeks walked the King's Highway to freedom in St. Augustine.
Father Pedro Camps, a Catholic priest from Mercadal, Minorca, accompanied the group to Florida. He was devoted to his parishioners and gained their profound respect (The Cross In The Sand, by Michael V. Gannon, Gainesville: U of FL Press 1983). He kept exquisite vital statistics records: Golden Book of the Minorcans (Fr. Camps' Register) and the beginning of the Cathedral Parish Records.
In the Cathedral Parish Records {CPR}, Andres Paxeti consistently stated that he was born in Trapani, in Sicily "in the Region of Naples." During that time-frame, Italy was still divided into several states, each with its own governing power (Italy, by Muriel Grinrod, NY: Frederick A. Praeger 1968). The entire southern portion from Naples to the end of the boot, including Sicily, was once known as The Kingdom of Two Sicilies or The Kingdom of Naples and Sicily (A History of Sicily, by M.I. Finley, Denis M. Smith & Christopher Duggan, London: Chatto & Windus 1986).
After the American Revolution, the British retroceded Florida back to Spain (Second Spanish Period: 1783-1821). Andres Paxeti was listed on the first Spanish Census of 1784 & on subsequent census schedules: 1786, 1787, 1793. He signed The Memorial - a document congratulating Gov. Zespedes as the official representative of the king of Spain and requesting that the Italians, Greeks & Minorcans be recognized as natural-born subjects who pledge devotion to the Crown, to the Catholic religion, and to the laws of Spain (East Florida 1783-1785: A File of Documents Assembled and Many of them Translated, by Joseph Byrne Lockey, Berkeley: U of CA Press 1949).
Gertrudis Pons died on 06 October 1784 in St. Augustine, FL (Deaths White Vol. I 1784-1826, CPR #1).
On 08 February 1785, Andres Paxeti married Maria Castell (White Marriages Vol. I 1784-1801, CPR #3).
In 1793 Andres Paxeti, barber, sent a written complaint to Gov. Don Juan N. Quesada in which he made a claim against the estate of Dr. Tomas Caraballo, deceased, who was a physician at the Royal Hospital in St. Augustine: "Andres Pacetty, with the respect that his occupation as barber is owed and because of the notorious delay of payment to employees ... after shaving Dr. Tomas Caraballo for twenty-three months, who died having only satisfied twelve Reales, which is the value of a stone to grind, ... the debt this person left is Ten Pesos" (East FL Papers, Testamentary Proceedings, Reel 135 Bundle 301).
In 1804, Andres Pacetty sold his Nuevo Mosquitos Plantation on Guano Creek in St. Johns Co., FL to Manuel Fernandez Bendicho: "with its woodlands, fences, fruit trees, thickets, houses and other buildings ... " (East FL Papers, Escrituras, Reel 171A, Bundle 374).
Andres Paxeti died 01 March 1818 at age 66 (Deaths White & Colored Vol. II 1809-1882, CPR #119).

Built after the hurricane in 1898 on Cherry Point in Camden County, GA - the home of Marion Floyd Pacetti (1867-1957), son of Lewis David Pacetti & Margaret Isabella Floyd; and his wife, Florence "Florrie" Eugenia Pacetti (1873-1948), daughter of David Bailey Pacetti & Evelina Downs. The two-story hard pine house faced south overlooking Big Creek and the marshes. The Pacettis hunted, trapped, gathered oysters, caught crabs, shrimped and fished around the waters of the area - Crooked River, Grover Island, Black Point, Marianna Creek, Kings Bay flats. In the mid-1950's, after the Cherry Point property was procured for a base by the the US Government, Marion F. Pacetti had the house moved to its present location - on GA Spur 40 near Crooked River State Park.
