The Directory of Percent-for-Art and Art in Public Places Programs is part of the Mailing List Labels Packages of Percent-for-Art and Art in Public Places Programs. The listings in the directory are public art programs sponsored by government agencies at city, county, state, and federal levels, including transit agencies, private, not-for-profit organizations, universities and colleges, and sculpture gardens. Each listing in the directory includes the name and address of the sponsoring agency or organization with the director’s name, telephone and facsimile number, e-mail address and URL for the program [if available], status of slide registry, residency requirements, funding source for the program, the program’s initiation date, and whether the agency or organization has a public art master plan available.

Percent-for-art and art in public places programs are administered by city, county, state and federal agencies responsible for the inclusion of art within the public realm. The percent-for-art programs were initiated by percent-for-art laws which stipulate that a percentage of the construction budgets for public buildings be expended for art. Programs include the commission of site-specific works (environmental, sculpture, murals, etc.), and in some cases, the acquisition of already-executed works (paintings, sculpture, crafts, etc.). Some offer opportunities for temporary installations.

Works are either commissioned outright or competitions are held to determine the selection of new site-specific work. Some of the agencies maintain slide registries from which artists are selected for the review process. Curators, gallery directors, consultants, architects, and other visual arts professionals also use these registries for other projects. The agencies make announcements of projects by prospectus by mail, advertisements in the art media, and/or through monthly newsletters.

The directory can help you to contact sponsoring entities to:

§   Obtain information from the sponsoring agencies about their programs and application procedures.

§   Place yourself on agency mailing lists for announcements of commissions, competitions, and acquisitions.

§   Introduce your work to the agencies through the use of postcards.

§   Submit slides to be placed in slide registries and to periodically update your submissions.
