M.S. in Psychology, 1993. University of Washington, Seattle, Washington. Emphasis in cognitive psychology (motor control and learning; individual differences). Minor in sport psychology. Masters thesis applied an all-or-none model of learning to the Wisconsin Card Sort Task.

B.S. in Sociotechnical Systems and Psychology, 1989. Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, California. Emphasis in cognitive and social/organizational psychology. Senior thesis examined effects of mental rehearsal on distance running performance.

 

Student-Athlete Academic Experience:

Academic Advisor/Learning Specialist for Student Athletes, University of Rhode Island (1998-present). Meet regularly with academically at-risk student-athletes, monitor academic progress, advise student-athletes on academics and career planning, teach study skills, liaison with coaches, faculty, and athletic department administrators. Oversee mentoring program to prepare top academic student-athletes for graduate school and post-graduate scholarships. Teach freshman seminar courses. Oversee Athletic Department Study Hall and Computer Lab, as well as laptops for team travel. Maintain website for Advising Programs for Student. Chapter President for Chi Alpha Sigma.

Tutorial Coordinator, Student-Athlete Academic Services, University of Washington (1995-1997). Oversaw day-to-day operations of the SAAS tutorial program. Duties included scheduling at-risk student-athletes' tutorial sessions, counseling student-athletes, monitoring student-athletes' academic progress, training tutors, communicating and coordinating with coaches, athletic department staff, and faculty, coordinating academic skills workshops, as well as various other administrative responsibilities such as coordinating hiring and payroll for a staff of 100 part-time tutors.

Tutorial Supervisor & Tutor, Student-Athlete Academic Services, University of Washington (1993-1995). Assisted the Tutorial Coordinator with administering day-to-day operations of the SAAS tutorial program. Duties include scheduling at-risk student-athletes' tutorial sessions, monitoring student-athletes' academic progress, training tutors, communicating and coordinating with coaches, athletic department staff, and faculty, as well as various other administrative responsibilities. Duties also include tutoring student-athletes one-on-one and in small groups in a wide variety of courses including psychology, sociology, writing, statistics, and mathematics.

 

Athletics Coaching/Management/Administrative/Journalism Experience

Chair, USATF Cross Country Running Council, USA Track & Field (2003-Present).  Administer all aspects of the USA's national cross country program, including national teams, national team coaching staff, national and regional championships, and national awards.  Oversee the conduct of the USA Cross Country Championships, including solicitation of bids, site visits, pre-event preparation, marketing and promotions, and post-event evaluation.  Member of USATF Long Distance Running Division Executive Committee. 

Coach, USA National Cross Country Team, USA Track & Field (2004). Coach for USA national men's team which competed at the 2000 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Brussels, Belgium.

Interim Assistant Coach, University of Rhode Island Women’s Track & Field Team (2004). Served as event coach for the middle and long distance runners at the University of Rhode Island.

Vice Chair, USATF Cross Country Running Council, USA Track & Field (2001-2003).  Assist the Council chair with administering all aspects of the USA's national cross country program, including national teams, national and regional championships, and national awards.  Oversee the conduct of the USA Cross Country Championships, including solicitation of bids, site visits, pre-event preparation, marketing and promotions, and post-event evaluation.

Elite Athlete Coach (1991-present). Designed training programs and competition schedules for elite post-collegiate distance runners. Athletes include finalists at USA and UK national championships, as well as US National Team members. USATF Level II Certified Coach in endurance events.

Coach, USA Junior National Cross Country Team, USA Track & Field (2000). Coach for USA national junior men's team competing at the 2000 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Portugal.

Manager & Coach, Competitive Team, Club Northwest (1991-1997). Coordinator and administrator for Club Northwest's elite athletes, including four participants at the 1996 US Olympic Track & Field Trials. Women's teams won national cross country titles in 1991, 1993, and 1996, while men's team won the 1991 team championship. Coached/advised Club Northwest's athletes in training programs and meet schedules. Arranged meet entry, travel arrangements, and accommodations. Advised team members regarding USATF, PNTF, and USOC programs. Handled public relations and promotions work for Club Northwest's teams and events, and served seven years on Club Northwest's Board of Directors.

Chair, Open Athletics Committee, Pacific Northwest Track & Field Association (1992-1997). Administered PNTF programs for elite and developing athletes. Developed and began implementation of strategic plan for development of emerging elite athletes in Pacific Northwest.

Team Leader/Manager, USA National Team, USA Track & Field (1994). Head of delegation for USA national team competing at the 1994 Yokohama (Japan) International Women's Ekiden Relay.

Coach, High Altitude Camp, USA Track & Field (1997). Participated as a coach at USATF's 1997 High Altitude Camp (Park City, Utah), a training camp spronsored by USATF and USOC for elite US distance runners. The camp served as a research project examining the effects of "Living High, Training Low" on distance running performance and other endurance running variables in elite distance runners.

Writer, New England Runner magazine (1999-present). Contributing writer for regional running publication (circulation 7000) serving New England.

Writer and columnist, Northwest Runner magazine (1992-2000). Contributing writer for regional running publication (circulation 7000) serving Washington and the Pacific Northwest.  Wrote monthly column chronicling regional and national elite-level news during 1992-1997.

Correspondent, Track & Field News magazine (1994-present). Contributing writer for the nation's premier track & field publication.

Volunteer Program Assistant, University of Washington Track & Field (1991-1997). Assisted cross country and track & field staff with home meet administration and event management.

Volunteer Assistant Distance Coach, University of Washington (1993). Assisted cross country/track staff with coaching responsibilities for University of Washington's distance runners.

Athletics Event Direction/Management Experience

Competition Director, IAAF Grand Prix adidas Oregon Track Classic (1993-present). Day-of-meet competition director for IAAF Grand Prix Track & Field meet.  Have previously coordinated elite athlete entry, travel, and accommodations for this event.

Member, Atlantic 10 Conference Cross Country Committee (2002-present).

Co-Founder/Coordinator, CanAm High Performance Distance Circuit (1997-2003). Co-founded and coordinated the CanAm High Performance Distance Circuit. Coordinated between the series' five meets and perform an extensive amount of work with athlete coordination, athlete transportation, public relations, and promotions.

Director of Championships, New England Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country / Track & Field Association (2001-2003).  Directed the women's cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field championships for approximately 50 New England NCAA Division I, II, and III colleges and universities.

Meet Manager, Atlantic-10 Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships (1999, 2001-present).  Assist meet director by overseeing competition aspects of the Atlantic-10 Conference Indoor Championships for the University of Rhode Island.

Technical Liaison, 2000 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships, Durham, NC (2000). Technical liaison between NCAA Track & Field Committee and host institution for 2000 national collegiate championships. Assisted the Duke University staff with all aspects of competition management.

Championships Director, 1999 USA Cross Country Championships, Tacoma, WA (1996-1999). Planned and directed all aspects of the USA national cross country championships including site selection, promotions, fundraising, media relations, and technical direction.

Technical Director, 1999 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships, Boise, ID (1999). Competition director for 1999 national collegiate championships. Managed all aspects of the competition and directed activities of the competition officials, volunteers, and other meet staff. Worked closely with NCAA Track & Field Committee.

Meet Director, 1997 Pac-10 Track & Field Championships (1996-1997). Planned and directed all aspects of the Pacific-10 Conference Track & Field Championships for the University of Washington's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Technical Director, NCAA Division I West Regional Cross Country Championships, Portland, OR (1993, 1995, 1999). Competition director for NCAA Division I regional cross country championships hosted by the University of Portland.

Founder/Director, Seattle International Track Classic (1991-1997). Founded Seattle International in 1991. Direct all aspects of meet, including an extensive amount of work with athlete coordination, media relations, promotion, and fund raising.

Meet Announcer (1992-present). Primary public address announcer for 2000-2004 USA Cross Country Championships, 2000 & 2003 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships, 2002-2004 Great American Cross Country Festival, 2000, 2002, 2003 GBTC Indoor Invitational, 1999 & 2003 NCAA D-1 West Regional Cross Country Championships, 1992-1996 Sundodger Cross Country Invitational, and a variety of other events. Field event and awards announcer for 2003 National Scholastic Indoor Championships meet.

Competition Director, Sundodger Cross Country Invitational (1992-1996). Managed all aspects of day of meet operations for the University of Washingtonís Sundodger Cross Country Invitational.

Meet Director, Washington Indoor Prep Meet (1995-1997). Managed and directed all aspects of the high school section of the 1996 and 1997 Washington Indoor Track & Field meets.

Technical Director, 1993 USCAA National T&F Championships, Seattle, WA (1993). Directed and coordinated all aspects of the track & field competition for the annual championships for corporate athletes.

Director, Pacific Northwest Association Championships (1990-1997). Designed present course, setup course, register entries, recruit athletes, and produce results for this regional cross country championship for post-collegiate runners. Public relations and event promotion.

Teaching Experience

Instructor, URI 101: Traditions & Transformations, University of Rhode Island (Fall 1998 to present). Instructor for freshmen seminar course for student-athletes that introduces students to URI, campus services, thetransition to college life, study skills, and special topics relevant to student-athletes' experiences at a NCAA Division I institution.

Instructor, Psychology 231: Human Performance Lab, Psychology Department, University of Washington (1991-1993). In addition to instructor's duties for this advanced research methodology course for undergraduate psychology majors, I coordinated all sections of the course and wrote the lesson plans. Also coordinated coursesí computer laboratory.

Instructor, Psychology 437: Applied Sport Psychology, Psychology Department, University of Washington (summer 1992, summer 1993). Instructor for course which exposed students to the application of psychological theories, research, and intervention strategies to sport settings.

Teaching Assistant, Psychology 51: Introductory Psychology, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Harvey Mudd College (Fall 1989). Reviewed and recommended software for an introductory psychology laboratory, wrote lesson plans, and met with students during office hours.

Graduate Assistant, Aging and Fitness Study (1991-1993). Investigated effects of improved aerobic fitness in the elderly on various cognitive and sleep variables. Duties included designing test battery, overseeing data collection, coding data, data management, and data analysis.

Research Assistant, Seattle 500 Study (1989-1991). Research assistant on project examining effects of prenatal alcohol exposure upon long-term development. Duties included testing 120 subjects on a four-hour test battery, coding data, data management, and data analysis.

Research Assistant (1988-1989). Assisted Dr. Shirlynn Spacapan, Harvey Mudd College, with two books (collections of readings on social psychology and health, and social psychology and aging). Duties included library research, editing manuscripts, and compiling Author and Subject indexes.
