Do you have a calendar or date book that shows the moon’s phases? If you can see a shaded circle, a shaded half-circle, or an empty circle in any given week of your calendar, you do! And even if you don’t have such a calendar, you can look up the moon’s phases in the newspaper or on the Internet.
A moon cycle goes like this: new moon, first quarter moon, full moon, and last quarter moon. Each phase occurs approximately 7 days after the last phase, so each full cycle lasts about 28 days.
At each new moon, the energy encourages fresh action and new beginnings! (It is like the sign of Aries in its energy.) A shaded circle in your calendar designates the New Moon.
At each first quarter moon, the energy encourages putting down roots and nurturing projects you’ve already started. (It is like the sign of Cancer in its energy.) A shaded left half of a circle designates the first quarter moon.
At each full moon, the energy encourages dealing with other people and external factors, all of which have to be taken into account as you can now reflect fully upon the results of your actions. (It is like the sign of Libra in its energy.) An empty circle designated the full moon.
At each last quarter moon, the energy encourages you to responsibly tie up loose ends and deal with old matters. (It is like the sign of Capricorn in its energy.) A shaded right half of a circle designates the last quarter moon.
So, every 7 days, the Universe is encouraging a different quality of energy. And each phase occurs in a sign, which tells you more about the meaning of the phase. (If you read astrology columns they will often discuss the sign of the moon’s current phase.)
But you don’t even need to know what sign the phase is in to figure out today’s phase, and what it signifies (see above) and then make the following exciting discoveries:
Each new moon has it’s own “family” which helps you tie together the meaning of events in your life. Wherever the New Moon is, there will be a first quarter moon at just about the same place in the sky exactly nine months later! And then, nine months after that, there will be a full moon at the same place… and nine months after that there will be a last quarter moon at the same place…
So, suppose you have a big event in your life at a certain time. Maybe you are offered a job. And wonder if you should take it. Say it is now a full moon when you get the offer. You could look back exactly nine months ago to the first quarter moon, and remember what was happening in your life then. What goals were you nurturing? (Quarter moon.) How does the job offer today carry on that theme? And nine months before that was the original new moon. What sort of beginnings were you making then?
This works best if you look at the current moon phase (say it is a full moon) and trace it back as far as the first quarter moon (nine months ago) and then to the new moon (nine months before that). Don’t try to trace it further than the original new moon, which is the “mother” of that moon family.
If you look at the current moon phase today, and it is a new moon phase, then you cannot trace anything nine months back. You would have to look at events that occurred when a new moon solar eclipse occurred at that particular point (which you’d have to look up in an astrological reference book). If the current phase today is a new moon solar eclipse, your earlier reference point is exactly nineteen years ago! That is when the last solar eclipse occurred at that point.
(For the purpose of this analysis: A new moon solar eclipse is a turbocharged new moon; a full moon lunar eclipse is a turbocharged full moon.)
I have always had fun with this technique. It is so eerily accurate that I have gone to the trouble of planning a trip, only to look at the history of the moon phases and realize that all trips during those phases get cancelled (which happens again)! There are other phase families that, for example, provide me with great freedom, or great love, or tremendous hardship. Sometimes I know that a moon family always provides me with opportunity so I really get out there when that family’s next phase comes around.
Here are some interesting “nine month” correlations:

Human gestation and the birth of babies! |

Starting school in September and getting out next June. |

The start of a new year on January 1st and the beginning of the school year around Labor Day. |
Have fun with the phases. Figure out which one is going on right now, and what is being encouraged. Then start counting nine months backward…
Meanwhile, here is a list of what was “nine months ago”…
If the current month is: Then look back at:
November (11) February (2)
December March
January April
February May
March June
April July
May August
June September
July October
August November
September December
October January
(You don’t need to have this list with you… in order to count backward nine months, you could just add three months and then subtract one year!)
