yoga

What is yoga?

Yoga is a way of connecting your body with the greater reality of who you are.

For some people, that means increasing their physical flexibility; for some, it means reducing stress; for some it means connecting body, mind and spirit. Most everyone who attends a yoga class finds that practicing yoga loosens or removes many mental and physical blockages. The yoga postures themselves, as well as the breathing and relaxation techniques of yoga, come from the Hindu scriptures of ancient India, and are over 5,000 years old. As western culture has adopted yogic practices, it has adapted them to western concepts of fitness and holistic health.

What style of yoga do you teach?

My initial exposure to yoga was through Kripalu Yoga Center in Western Massachusetts, many, many years ago. So, my style and purpose is similar to this gentle, self-compassionate form of yoga. More recently I have trained in Integrative Yoga Therapy, another holistic and nonjudgmental system of yoga practice.

In each class I teach yoga postures in a sequence that progresses through the 7 major ‘chakras’ or energy centers of the body.(This mirrors the pattern in which Kundalini energy rises in the body.) Each class also features breathing, relaxation and meditation. In all of my classes: all levels of experience, from beginner to advanced, are welcomed and accommodated.

How do I prepare for a class?

It is best not to eat within two hours before class (however it is better to have a small snack up to one hour before class, rather than starve!).

Wear loose clothing that you feel comfortable in -- clothing that will not restrict your movements.

It’s best to stay barefooted during the class, so your feet can get contact with, and traction with, the floor.  Bring socks if you want - you can wear them during the relaxation and meditation at the end of class.

Bringing a beach or bath towel is a good idea - there are many ways a rolled-up towel can assist you if you’re less flexible.

Don’t compare yourself to others - remember it’s your   mind connecting with your   body -- leave the competitiveness at home!
