Toddlers
rule! At least this one does. This is our daughter, Maddux Lynn, center
of the universe. One thing we did with her, that I recommend to others,
is we taught her to sign.
Infants
understand a lot before they are able to verbally communicate. The inability
to communicate is believed to be a major source of frustration for them,
but they can learn to express their needs by signing starting at about
9 months old. This does not delay their verbal progress, indeed it accelerates
it, and in one study appeared to add about 7 points to their IQ.
We taught
Maddux signs for milk, water, help ,more, down, up, hungry, please,
bath, and pain. Once they know the pain
sign they do it and point to
the site of the pain. This was very helpful during a series of ear infections
and during teething.
