| PONCHOS and RUANAS |
|
South American ponchos and ruanas are among my favorite garments due to their classic
simplicity and basic utility. The poncho is placed over the head and
worn with points in front and back or at the sides.
The ruana is open in the front and at the sides. It can be worn in a number of ways: one
side swept up over the opposite shoulder, belted in front and back or my favorite,
belted in the front only with the back loose. They are fun and easy to wear.

This plaid ruana was made from 30 different
North American herdsires. What a design challenge and spinning experience!
I'm really proud of this project.
This 100% handspun and handwoven garment contains the highest quality alpaca
fiber that exists on this continent! It was
auctioned off at the 1995 AOBA conference for the benefit of the association. |
 |
Natural gray commercial alpaca yarn was dyed green and blue for the stripes in this
ruana commissioned by the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association as a gift for the 1997
conference chairperson. It can be reproduced in several natural shades and any dyed colors.
Stripes and plaids can also be customized. |
 |
This brightly colored ruana is a slightly heavier fabric
handwoven of commercially spun 100% wool. The lengthwise stripes are very slimming and
can be done in a variety of weave patterns. |
 |
With a luxurious fiber like alpaca, softness is it's most noticeable
and memorable characteristic. People immediately liken it to cashmere.
This natural white Aran poncho was my first alpaca project.
The first time I felt alpaca was when I discovered this yarn \fIon sale\fP
in the local knitting store in 1988.
I immediately fell in love with the fiber and designed
the Aran patterns in this poncho to accentuate the yarn.
Since it is a bulky, loosely spun, single-ply yarn, the poncho is
exceptionally soft, warm and snuggly. |
 |
The turquoise and white hooded baby poncho is made from commercial cotton
yarn. The pattern is similar to the Aran poncho.
I added the hood for extra warmth and a generous tassel. This substantial
fabric is made in Turkish crochet, commonly known as afghan stitch.

|
Ruanas and ponchos are an easy fit, available in adult, child and toddler sizes.
They are fun to wear and unusual.
Unique weave patterns make them a distinctive, one-of-a-kind gift.
Color patterns and graphed pictures can be worked in the Turkish Crochet technique.
This highly thermal fabric can also be used in ruanas and throws with worsted
weight alpaca, wool or cotton yarns. All styles of ponchos and ruanas are available in
adult, child or infant/toddler sizes. |
| Fringe on all my woven shawls, scarves and ruanas is finished in a
2-ply twist to preserve the yarn and to avoid
tangles, lending a very neat and bouncy, finished look to each garment.
These woven poncho and ruana fabrics in medium and heavy weights can also be
used for blankets and throws.
Any of these items can also be made from mohair, wool or blends of these
fibers.
