Flying the Model:
This model is construction is on hold.
Construction Highlights:
The plane has a scale outline. I cheated a little by increasing the cross section of the fuselage by 5%. This gave me a little more interior volume for the fan unit without increasing the size of the plane. The wing also has a thicker section.
This model is primarily balsa. Formers and longerons establish the basic structure. The exterior surface is sheeted in 1/16" contest grade balsa. Wings are fully sheeted, and use 0.007" carbon fiber spars. The tail is a full flying stabilator.
Power is by a Kress-709 or MGM-709 fan unit. This model would be great for EDF. The battery placement will be tight, but there is a significant volume above the inlet.
I have used 2 channels for 1/2A ducted fans and 1/2A powered aircraft before. I see no need for a throttle. The scale flaperon are used as ailerons. The full flying stabilator is used for pitch, in the F-16 they are also used for roll control. The rudder is fixed. I have included the sub-fins for display only. They are removable, so that they are not damage upon landing.
