• Gov. Albert O. BROWN (b. 1853 Northwood, NH - d. 1937) - Brown practiced law in Manchester, first with Burnham & Brown; then Burnham, Brown & Warren; and finally with Burnham, Brown, Jones & Warren.
• Gov. Charles FLOYD (b. 1861 Derry, NH - d. 1923) - Governor 1907/09.  "...Floyd in 1888 operated Manchester One Price Clothing Store. This business incorporated as Charles M. Floyd Company (1914). Floyd also was part owner of F.M. Hoyt Co..."
• Gov. David H. GOODELL (b. 1834 Hillsborough, NH - d. 1915) - Governor 1889/91.  David Goodell was the only child of a farming couple who moved to Antrim (NH) when the boy was age seven (1841).
• Gov. Hugh GREGG (b. 1917 Nashua, NH - ) - Governor 1953/5.
• Gov. Judd GREGG (b. 1947 Nashua, NH - ) - Governor 1989/92.
• Natt HEAD (b. 1828 Hooksett - d. 1883) - Governor 1879/81.  "...In 1852 Natt Head was joined by his brother William in the family lumber business, and brickmaking was added. The Head & Dowst Constructing and Building Company, in Manchester, constructed railways and public buildings..."
• John W. KING (b. 1918 Manchester, NH - d. 1994) - Governor 1963/9.  "...John KING was one of six children (and the only son) born and raised in Manchester, where his parents were employed in textile mills..."
• Francis P. MURPHY (b. 1877 Winchester, NH - d. 1958) - Nashua manufacturer; Governor 1937/41.  "...Francis Murphy was the fourth of eight children born to Irish immigrant Roman Catholic parents...Murphy and two partners organized the J.F. McElwain Company, a manufacturer of shoes..."
• Walter R. PETERSON (b. 1922 Nashua, NH - ) - Peterborough realtor/college president; Governor 1969/73.
• Gov. Benjamin PIERCE (b. 1757 Chelmsford, MA - d. 1839) - As a Revolutionary War Brigade Major, Pierce was immediately (1786) asked to organize the Hillsborough County (NH) Militia...He married 1st in 1787 to Elizabeth ANDREWS; 2nd to Anna KENDRICK, in 1790.  One of Pierce's own nine children, Franklin, later became President (served 1853 - 1857).
• Wesley POWELL (b. 1915 Portsmouth, NH - d. 1984) - Manchester/Hampton Falls lawyer; Governor 1959/63.
• George A. RAMSDELL (b. 1834 Milford, NH - d. 1900) - Peterborough lawyer, then Nashua political figure and businessman; Governor 1897/9.
• Jeremiah SMITH (b. 1759 Peterborough, NH - d. 1842) - Smith was a delegate to the New Hampshire Constitutional Conventions of 1791 - 1792. He later returned to Exeter, NH, where he married Eliza ROSS, March 8, 1797.
• John B. SMITH (b. 1838 Saxton's River, VT - d. 1914) - Governor 1893/5. John Smith was one of eight children born to Ammi and Lydia (BUTLER) SMITH; three of his siblings died in childhood. His father first operated a sawmill at Hillsborough, NH but moved to Vermont to manufacture woolens (1833/47). He returnedto Hillsborough to retire.
• Fredrick SMYTH (b. 1819 Candia - d. 1899) - Smyth served again as Mayor of Manchester in 1864, and was elected governor in 1865 and 1866.
• Governor John STEELE (b. 1789 Salisbury, NC - d. 1865) - Orphaned at an early age, Steele arrived at Peterborough in May, 1811, after meeting  Captain Nathaniel MORISON, of Peterborough, NH, a coachmaker who was briefly at Fayetteville, NC..Steele married Jane MOORE, in 1816, and in 1817 started the first power loom in New Hampshire, at Peterborough.
• James A. WESTON (b. 1827 Manchester, NH - d. 1895) - Manchester civil engineer; Governor 1871/72, 1874/75.
• Governor Levi WOODBURY (b. 1789 Francestown, NH - d. 1851) - "...President Jackson appointed Woodbury Secretary of the Navy (served 1831 - 1834) and then Secretary of the Treasury (served 1834 - 1841)..."

• Zachariah CHANDLER (b. 1813 Bedford, NH - d. 1879 Chicago, IL) - "...Chandler was opposed to slavery as an institution, both as it existed and to its extension into new American territories. He supported the Underground Railway, helping slaves escape from slave states..."
• General John G. FOSTER (b. 1823 Whitefield, NH - d. 1874 Nashua, NH) - "War hero and career military man... Foster's funeral in Nashua was one of the great events in the city's history. All business was suspended, and public and private buildings were draped in mourning..."
• Jesse Augustus GOVE (b. 1824 Weare, NH - d. 1862 Gaines' Mill, VA) - "...he secured a commission as Captain of Dragoons in the Regular Army.  Gove was serving in Utah Territory when the Civil War began..."
• Abraham LINCOLN (b. 1809 Springfield, IL - d. 1865 Washington, DC) - This page includes a portrait of the sixteenth President of the United States which began with the collecting of three thousand dollars in pennies, nickels, and dimes by New Hampshire schoolchildren in 1923.
• Brigadier General John McNEIL (b. 1784 Hillsborough, NH - d. 1850 Washington, D.C.) - Supervisor of the Port of Boston; McNEIL married Elizabeth A. PIERCE, the eldest daughter of General Benjamin PIERCE of Hillsborough, in 1814. Pierce, an old hero of the American Revolution, was an important man in New Hampshire...
• Brigadier General James MILLER (b. 1776 Peterborough, NH - d. 1850 Temple, NH) - "...Miller was made a brigadier general by a grateful U.S. Congress, but he left the military in 1819, to be the first governor of Arkansas Territory..."
• Franklin PIERCE (b. 1804 Hillsborough, NH - d. 1869 Concord, NH) - Lawyer, state and national legislator, President of the United States...His father was Gov. Benjamin PIERCE.
• General Aaron Fletcher STEVENS (b. 1819 Derry, NH - d. 1887 Nashua, NH) - "...Aaron STEVENS' family moved to Peterborough (NH) in 1834, and stayed until 1838. The teenager went to school while working at the Peterborough cotton processing mill owned by John STEELE (Governor of New Hampshire 1844/5)..."

• William D. SWART (b. 1856 Margaretville, NH - d. 1936 Nashua, NH) - In 1890, he joined Charles A. ROBY, in Nashua, NH, in the retail lumber business, and in 1892, Roby & Swart purchased the only edge tool works in Nashua, as well as a woodworking plant.  They consolidated with Cook & Company, while retaining their manufacturing and wholesale business as "Roby & Swart Manufacturing".
