Poetry: Time for a Rhyme!

...although here in First Grade, we know that not all poems have to rhyme!
Poetry is a special part of our language experience. At least once a week, we'll learn a new poem! At first, Mrs. Tonnessen puts the poem on large chart paper, so it's easy for us to read it. We read it several times together, and we get to circle different words in the poem!
Then we get a copy to place in our Poetry Binder! Every Tuesday is poetry homework night. We'll bring the poem and the binder home, and we have to do the attached homework assignment. Usually our poems are seasonal or theme related.
Our Poetry Binder stays in our desk, where we can read over all of our poems during Reading Workshop. Mrs. Tonnessen always publishes STUDENT poems, too...we have lots of poets in First Grade! And each morning, one helper chooses a poem to start the day!

What a great way to spend our reading time!
