The History of Needham
Needham in England

From Lewis’s Topographical Dictionary, in four volumes, 1831, it appears that Needham Market is in the County of Suffolk in the Parish of Barking, Hundred of Bosmere and Claydon, nine miles northwest of Ipswich. Population 1300 in 1831, 1393 in 1880. There is also in England another Needham, a parish in the Hundred of Earsham, Norfolk, one and one fourth miles southwest from Harleston. Population 351 in 1831. It is in the southern part of the County of Norfolk near the County of Suffolk. Dedham is in the northeast corner of the County of Essex, and but a short distance from the boundary between that County and Suffolk. Population 1651 in 1831. Suffolk is south of Norfolk, and Essex is south of Suffolk.

Dead Fowl Plague Old Cemetery
By Jon Steinman, Orlando Sentinel, June 9, 2003

About 160 years after pioneer Aaron Jernigan settled the area that would become Orlando, his final resting place is the scene of a modern mystery most fowl.

For more than a month, dead and often bloody chickens and roosters have been turning up at the Lake Hill Cemetery on Orlando's west side.

They've been hung from trees, left on grave markers and otherwise strewn about the 5-acre reminder of days -- and people -- long gone and buried beneath Orlo Vista. Bewildered residents have theories -- such as voodoo rites and cockfighting leftovers -- about the birds generally found inside knotted plastic bags.

Sometimes they're decapitated or missing feet. The birds were first noticed in late April, and up to a couple of bags a week have been found since. There have been up to three chickens in a bag.

Orange County Animal Services officials theorize that the chickens are being used to help train fighting dogs.

"There's definitely some mischief going on, no doubt about that," said Charlie Bibber, a longtime Orlo Vista resident and president of the Lake Hill Cemetery Association, the community group that maintains the cemetery on Old Winter Garden Road. He is hoping to have gates installed to keep cars from cruising in at night, and is at work on "No Trespassing" signs.

Still, he has turned to the Orange County Sheriff's Office for help. So far, no one can figure out who's leaving the fowl carcasses, let alone put a stop to it.

Different people have different ideas about this ongoing feather flap, which
occasionally spills into the Ohev Shalom cemetery next door.

The Orlando Game Club, a pre-eminent cockfighting establishment once located on Orlo Vista's north side, convened cockfights for about 40 years until the activity was outlawed in Orange County decades ago. That has some residents speculating that the old practice is still clawing and pecking away, but now operates underground. Others point to some new residents in the area, many from the West Indies, and hint at voodoo practices.

"I figure there's either voodooism or maybe it's cockfighting," said Opal Flynn, 81, a retired grade-school teacher whose The History of Orlo Vista will be out in hardcover in the fall. "We can't prove anything."

The birds, like the decapitated pair found Wednesday morning, don't bear evidence of mauling. And cockfight managers might be more likely to dispose of their evidence in a back-alley trash bin than in the open.

That, taken with the curious fact that some of the bags hold a few pennies as well as dead birds, makes the case for voodoo stronger for some in the neighborhood.

"One day we saw a woman go in and take something from a tree. I think it was voodoo or something," said a clerk at La Caribbean Jamaican Take Out & Grocery, across the street from Lake Hill. "She took a bag from a tree and left."

With a hand on her mouth, the store clerk cast a long gaze out the window
overlooking the cemetery. She hadn't heard about the recurring problem among the headstones.

"It's voodoo," she said, and then declined to give her name because she said she feared for her safety.

"Weird," said Mike Scott, Orange Animal Services director of field operations. "Haven't heard anything like it."

A study published by the University of Florida in February found that voodoo and other mystical practices are experiencing a renaissance in the state, in large part because of Latin American and African-Caribbean immigration.

But it's not only the newly arrived who practice those crafts.

"All forms of African-American spiritual beliefs are now being practiced by a large number of white people," according to Jeffrey Anderson, a UF history graduate student who compiled the report.

"That wasn't common in antebellum days."

Anderson said the clues point directly to mysticism.

"The pennies might be payments to a spirit or god, or that the person is hoping more money comes back to them later," Anderson said.

"This is pretty common in voodoo or Santeria or those kind of things. The chickens are most likely a sacrifice to the dead or some spirit. It doesn't have to necessarily be a direct ancestor of the person in the graveyard, but the dead are important. Graveyards are powerful spiritually.

It's hard to say if the voodoo rites are peaceful, he said.

"Normally it's not something you have to worry about."

But it does worry the local residents who tend the cemetery.

Pioneer Jernigan, who came to the area in 1843 and was its first state representative, died in 1891. Eighty years later a memorial plaque was erected announcing his final resting place with the words: "Orlando's first settler."

Jernigan's grave is actually more than 20 yards to the west, where it sits in the shade beneath old oak boughs.

Bibber speculates that the grave's location on the cemetery's fringe has kept it feather-free.

But at the rate the birds are piling up, it may only be a matter of time before a bird-heavy bag is draped across Jernigan's marker, Bibber said.

"It bothers me," he said. "As far as I'm concerned, it's abuse of the cemetery, where people were supposed to be buried in peace."

Alan Jarnagin, submitted a query to last month's Home Page looking for information about his grandfather, Charles Jarnagin, b. 1872 in Ohio. Charles was an orphan raised in the Fayette County Children's Home. Alan recently added the following information:

"When we last communicated back in February, I was trying to trace my orphaned grandfather, Charles Smith Jarnagin, in Fayette/Highland Counties, Ohio. Since then through the Ohio Historical Society, I have found his birth record with his father and mother plus all three of them on the 1880 census living on a farm in Union Township where Charles was born. Apparently he was orphaned sometime after the 1880 census. Now that I have found Wesley Jarnagin and Mary Nixon, my greatgrandparents, I have been trying to trace their lines in an effort to discover where I belong."

Armed with this new information and thanks to Kay Stone's extensive list of Jernigan marriages, we were able to find the following record:

John W. Jarnigin m. Mary E. Nixon  23 Jan 1866  Ross Co., OH

So Alan now knows that his great-grandfather's name was actually John Wesley Jarnagin, and he has a new place to search for information -- in Ross Co., OH. He promises to update us when he fits together more pieces of his puzzle!

Deborah Jones writes: "I am researching Texas gravestone carvers, and have come across a gravestone (carved in German) with a date 1885 in a Lutheran cemetery in Pflugerville, Texas. It is signed "A.J Jernigan Austin, Tex".

Does anyone have any information that about this particular Jernigan (as a stone carver, gravestone carver)? Is he one of your Jernigan's?

Any information you could send me would be tremendously appreciated!!"

Dan Fairfax has the following inquiry:

The 1800 Bladen County, NC Census spells Whitmel Jernigan entry as Whitmil Jornigan, Abram Jernigan as Abram Jornigan, and shows Abram Jornigan/Jernigan as next family over from Micajah Fairfax in Bladen County ...area which is now Columbus County, NC "Cypress Branch" Area off of NC Hwy 1004 near Hayes Road intersection with NC Hwy 1004. Whitmil [Whitmel] Jornigan [Jernigan] lives two "Family Homes" away from Dempsey Coleman of Columbus County, NC "Fame".

David Strickland is listed as two Family Homes away from Micajah Fairfax on the other side and Philip Strickland lives three Family Homes away from Micajah Fairfax and between Richard Watts and Richard Tatom Family Homes.

You can locate the Cypress Branch area of NC Hwy 1004 out of Fair Bluff, NC via www.topozone.com in the "CERRO GORDO" Quad, with Map Center at 695117E & 3794133N coordinates. I started with Fair Bluff, NC and went East on NC Hwy 1004 [ "Rough'n'Ready" Road ].

My question is "Who were Abram Jernigan/Jornigan's parents and wife and children?"

Then he had this followup:

May have been a son of Abram Jornigan/Jarigan/Jernigan ... My Abram Jornigan was listed in the 1800 Bladen County, NC Census ... Actual location being in now Columbus County, NC in the Cerro Gordo area of Hwy 1004 NC at Cypress Branch. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated!!!

Also there is a topozone Feature that is labeled "Tories Island" within a mile of this area and I was wondering if anybody had any history on the origin of this landmark [important enough to be on a GNIS Topo map"?

Also there is a cemetery right at Cypress Branch on NC Hwy that crosses Cypress Branch right off of HWY 1004 NC, and I was wondering if anybody knew the name and if it has been surveyed?

The reason I am pursuing this is because our "Brick Wall" is Micajah Fairfax, 1800 Bladen County, NC Census and he lived next door and his son Nedom/Needham/Neadham Fairfax was identified in Whitmel/Whitmil Jornigan/Jernigan/Jarnigan's 1973 Bladen County Will as a Cousin, meaning Whitmel's Uncle's daughter married Nedom Fairfax????

Also, anybody have a clue as to Abram Jernigan's[Jornigan, Jarnigan, Jarnagan] [1800 Bladen County Census] parents?

Editor's Note

Another busy month in the Boots household. The girls and I headed to SC to spend a week with my parents. I spent most of the time at my grandmother's who is recovering from a broken hip and wrist after a fall. She has her good and bad days, but as the doctor says, "She is one tough cookie!" Even with all that she is enduring, her sense of humor and her concern for others is ever present. She is one special lady.  She just celebrated her 86 birthday last week!

Last month I told you we were double car shopping. Well, we found our truck and Krystal found her car. So we are all mobile once again!

Cousin Deb and her family came by for an overnight visit, which we greatly enjoyed, despite the wild afternoon we had preparing for their visit. Within a half hour of their arrival, we had a terrible storm. That in itself wouldn't have been so bad, but it was raining sideways and coming in the windows. So I ran around closing them. The roof started leaking which necessitated placing buckets in the attic. The electricity went out. Then I noticed that the basement was turning into a pond as water started coming in under the back door. I was mopping this up when someone knocked on the door. It was some poor woman who was very lost and needed directions, which I wrote out for her. While I was doing that, I heard a muted ringing and tried to figure out what it was when I realized that it was the phone downstairs. The two phones on the main floor are electrical. Needless to say, we didn't get to the phone in time, but I was able to get a message telling me that Deb and her family was almost to my house. I sent the lost lady on her way and then talked Deborah and Wayne to my house. Thank goodness they had a cell phone. The storm had washed out our lower driveway, so we decided to park them right where they had pulled in. After getting them settled, I realized that the basement was continuing to flood despite the fact that the rain had stopped. I threw a few more towels down the steps and decided I might as well relax. (Fortunately, we have a drain down there and eventually the water disappeared.) The electricity came on a few hours later, allowing me to cook the meal I promised them. We spent the rest of the evening just talking and laughing. It was wonderful!

As to other activities, we have been working on getting the girls college ready again. Krystal goes back to Vanderbilt on the 20th of August. Kim has a little longer, she returns on August 31st. The summer has flown!

I want to thank everyone that has sent in info for the homepage. If you haven't seen what you sent in yet, it will be in the next one. I had enough info for this one and most of the next one!  This is great! Keep sending the info in though. I'll be waiting to hear from you!

Until then, ...Happy hunting!

Marla Boots
