Sharon Tingley sends this information on David Jernigan:
NOTES ON DAVID JERNIGAN:
David Jernigan was born in 1790 in Wayne Co.,
NC. He died on April 1, 1842 in Fayette Co., TN. He was buried in the Ames Plantation
area, Fayette Co., TN.
Information from Edwards descendant:
David married Amelia "Milly" Edwards on June 24, 1809, perhaps in Robertson Co.,
TN. Amelia Edwards was born on May 27, 1792 in Louisa Co., VA. She died on March 24, 1861
in Fayette Co., TN. She was the daughter of William Edwards and Ann Walton. (Ann Walton
was the daughter of John Walton, Jr. and Mary Baker of Louisa Co., VA.) Amelia had a
brother, Larkin Edwards. The Edwards family moved to Robertson Co., TN around 1802.
By 1830, David had moved his family from Robertson Co., TN to Fayette Co., where he
appears in the 1830 census, pg. 25: David Jernigan: 1 m 10-15, 2 m 30-40, 1 m 40-50, 1 m
50-60; 2 f under 5, 1 f 5-10, 1 f 20-30. 26 slaves owned.
He also appears on the 1840 census, Fayette Co. TN, pg. 163: David Jernigan: 1 m 5-10; 1 m
20-30; 1 m 50-60; 3 f 10-15; 1 f 40-50.
The following information comes from a Fayette Co., TN web site, http://www.AmesPlantation.org.
The Ames Plantation area originated about 1820 in Fayette Co., TN. The site lists several
of the original residents, and David Jernigan was one of them. David Jernigan was one of
the earliest and most prominent of Fayette county's settlers. He participated in the
County's first court session in 1824 and was instrumental in its formation. In the
mid-1820s Jernigan and William Owen established the first water powered grist mill in the
County.
A picture of his tombstone has the following inscription: In memory of David Jernigan who
departed this life April the 1st. 1842 in the 52 year of his age. He was born in Wayne Co.
NC. & raised in TN.
Located on property entered by David Jernigan in 1823, this cemetery served as the site of
his burial in 1842. His is the only gravestone present. The origin and use of the cemetery
is uncertain, however, it appears likely that it served as the family burial plot of the
Jernigan family. This assumption is supported by its location on Jernigan's property and
the absence of documentation supporting community or church involvement. The presence of
approximately 15 grave depressions suggests that the cemetery may have served more than
the immediate Jernigan family and raises the possibility of use by neighboring families or
by the slave population present on Jernigan's plantation.
The cemetery, which is found in a heavily wooded area overlooking the headwaters of the
North Fork of the Wolf River, is covered in a thick blanket of Vinca minor. Designated
state historic site number 40FY362 by the Tennessee Division of Archaeology, the cemetery
is located at U.T.M. coordinate E297520 N3891608 which is on the USGS Hickory Valley, TN
7.5' quadrangle map.
Information on the family of David & Amelia Edwards Jernigan comes from p. 113, Old
King William HOMES & FAMILIES by Peyton Neale Clarke.
Children of David and Amelia (Edwards) Jernigan:
1. Jerusha JERNIGAN
2. Elizabeth A. JERNIGAN
3. Narcissa JERNIGAN
4. Amelia JERNIGAN
5. David J. JERNIGAN b. 1819 TN
Further information about David J. Jernigan b. 1819:
David J. moved with his father from Robertson Co., TN to Fayette Co. Next David Jr. went
to upper MS; married Martha Brougher; became a doctor; and moved to Hunt Co., TX. Martha
died in Texas, possibly in childbirth with their youngest son, Thomas S. Jernigan. David
remarried to her sister, Kate. There is a marriage record in Hunt Co., TX for D. J.
Jernigan to Kate Boyd on Nov. 11, 1873. Possibly this was Mrs. Kate Boyd, and her maiden
name was Brougher. If so, she died before 1880, as David J. is once again a widower on the
1880 Hunt Co., TX census.
Information from "Southern Genealogists Exchange", Vol. 43, p. 49:
Frederick Brougher and his wife Mary Ann Storch were originally from Rowan Co., NC but
died near Batesville, MS on their plantation in Tippah Co. The Brougher children were
listed as: 1. Kate Beard m. D. J. Jernigan 2. Martha Ann m. D. J. Jernigan (his first
wife) 3. David Melanchthlon m. Mattie A. Jernigan.
Children of David and Martha (Brougher) Jernigan:

Grammar on Aug. 3, 1872 in Hunt Co., TX.

Curiosity got the better of her and Sharon went to the library to look up Fayette Co., TN
records. Both David Jernigan and his wife Amelia left wills, but she could only find their
names in an index, not on the actual probate records themselves. But she did find the
following marriages and a record showing that David, Jr. was David James Jernigan.
Fayette Co., TN April, 1842:
David James Jernigan appointed executor of David Jernigan, deceased. Securities: Wm. Baw,
Isaac Lucky, Wm. A. Gates, L. H. Coe, Simon Walker.
Fayette Co. Marriages:
John H. Morgan to Miss N. Jernigan, March 31, 1842
B. D. Finney to Eliz. J. Jernigan, May 26, 1846
David J. Jernigan to Martha J. Caraway, Oct. 3, 1844
David C. Booth to Miss Amelia J. Jernigan, March 19, 1839
Sharon thinks these are all probably David Sr.'s children, but wonders this: Did another
David J. Jernigan marry the Brougher sisters, Martha Ann and Kate? Or did David have two
wives named Martha, for a total of three marriages?

Linda Rogers
Curtis writes, "On Sunday, September 26 we visited the Gossburg, Coffee County,
TN homesite of Alexander C. Jernigan. We also visited the Jernigan Family Cemetery across
the road from the Jernigan homesite. The cemetery is in a very run down condition with
very thick underbrush and briars which are over head high. It is difficult to walk to the
cemetery due to the run down condition. The Jernigan Family Cemetery (spelled
"cemetary" on the sign) has these graves: Needham and Mary Polly Jernigan, D. W.
and Elizabeth Earl, and Ozias and Elizabeth Earl. The sign at the cemetery read:
"Family Cemetary
Needham & Mary Jernigan
Ozias & Elizabeth Earl
Martha Earls"
The cemetery has an iron fence around it, however, the fence is very rusted. If anyone
desires additional information, feel free to contact us. I am Linda Rogers Curtis. Mary
Elizabeth Jernigan, daughter of Needham and Mary Polly Jernigan, is my Great Grandmother
which would make Needham and Mary Polly Jernigan my Great Great Grandparents.

Cindy Leonard is looking for any info on Robert D. Jernigan. This is what she knows so far:
He was born in 1856 d. 1906 in Alabama. He
married a Melvina (last name unknown) all that is on her headstone is Melvina. Anyway they
both died in March of 1906. They were my Great Grandparents. Lived in and around Escambia
County, Al. Had 5 Children:
Alex or Elec he married a Lambert
Louella she married a J. Lewis
Lena
Preston
Langley or Lang ( my Granddaddy) he married a Francis E. Hall
Any info would be greatly appreciated as I have hit a brick wall as all these people are
gone and none of the grandchildren remember anything about Robert & Melvina. I haven't
been able to locate them on any census. I can swear to this as I am now wearing glasses
because of all the census's that I have looked at. HaHa! (Editor's note: While
proofreading and putting this on the homepage, I realized that this is one of the
Jernigans in my line. Yes, I'm pitiful! Anyhow, as my research is still packed
in boxes, if anyone else can help her until I can get to them, please do! In the
meantime, Hi Cousin Cindy! And I do have some info on Robert, but if I remember
correctly, he is one of the elusive brothers I've been trying to locate! I do have
his ancestry back a few more generations though. I'll find the files as soon as I
can!)

Bill Adler writes, "I am working on a Military Brats reunion. I am trying to find Wade Jernigan's daughter - Joyce Ann Jernigan. In the 70's and/or 80's, she was a flight attendant for Eastern or Braniff Airlines. Wade was stationed at White Sands Missile Range, in New Mexico in the mid 1960's. She would have been a Jr in High school which put her around 17 years old, which probably put her dad around 40. Therefore, Wade was probably born around 1925. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Editor's Note
Boy is it ever pretty in Pennsylvania in October! Not that I have had too much time to notice, but in running my errands, I do check out all the fall color that is there to behold along the roads!
It is also a busy time around here despite the fact that we are just moving in! I've been out in the yard gathering chestnuts to keep the squirrels from getting them all. We have concord grapes that I've got to go pick this week. (No time for jelly this year, I think I'll just make juice.) And our apple trees are full of fruit! Those will have to wait for a little while.
We are in our house! My new contact info is: Marla Boots, 1401 Rt. 588, Fombell, PA 16123. Our phone number here is: 724.452.7294 and the fax is: 724.452.7296. Email is the same for now. Unfortunately Aol is not local here. I may be searching for another access company!
The animals and people made the 16 hour trip up here with the moving van just fine. Of course we had to sedate the two cats and the dog. (None of them are happy travelers otherwise) After the first 12 hours, I'm sure that the people felt sedated as well. I know that I was glad to fall into bed that night and even more grateful that the beds were already in the house and not on the truck!
Both sets of our parents, Ed's brother, Cyndi's boyfriend, a number of the girl's friends, my grandmother and Aunt Pat showed up to help pack and prepare food. That made the packing relatively quick and the food really delicious! And I must say that they did a great job of packing, because not one thing shifted or broke on the trip up here. And with all the construction and bumps that was a miracle in itself! We still have another trip to make to get the stuff in the attic, the shed, the yard and my craft room! Oh yeah, and two more collector cars, Ed's 70 1/2 Z28 RS Camaro and a 70 Tilt front end Camaro. Last time we used a 24' truck. We should be able to get a much smaller truck this trip. If not, I don't know where it will all fit!!!!
I bet we were a site as we caravanned up here. Ed was driving the moving van, towing a car trailer with our 68 Convertible Impala. The dog rode with him. I followed behind in the van with the girls and the two cats. I certainly didn't envy Ed the job of maneuvering that truck and trailer! He did a great job though.
We are working hard to unpack everything. Thanks to our new neighbors and Ed's cousin and friends for all their help! They made the job of unloading the truck much easier.
Everyone seems to be settling in pretty good around here. The girls were happy to finally get their winter clothes up here as there has already been some cool mornings and evenings here. The cats are the only ones who are not totally adjusted. They used to love to go outside and play in our other yard. Here they are terrified of the yard. We think that it is because there is so much grass and very few bushes. Our other yard was the opposite! Here there is nowhere for them to hide. If we drag them out there, they go into stealth mode and slink around on their stomachs until they can make a mad dash for the door. I don't know if they will get over it or not. Only time will tell.
Open house was last week and we were very happy to find out that our girls are doing extremely well in school up here despite the upheaval and the transfer to an academically better state. The twins are the top two in their advanced history class! Cyndi is settling is very nicely during her senior year, making new friends and actually enjoying school this year while getting good grades.
In our new house, I have an office! Well actually I have part of a large room which I am sharing with my husband. I have lots of space for my computer desk and file cabinets! So I'm hoping to get all my info better organized now! I am certainly looking forward to that!
You know what? Last month was so hectic that I didn't even realize that it was our 3rd anniversary for the Jernigan Homepage! Happy Belated Birthday to us!
The reason this newsletter is so late is not because of all of the moving activities (well not totally). It is because my modem decided to die in mid-September. And actually, that was almost perfect timing as the computer is still under warranty in SC and I had plane reservations. So I had to take it down there to get it fixed. But I had to wait a week before I actually was going to fly down. And since I was flying, I only took the tower part of the computer. (I carried it on the plane. There was no way that I was trusting it to baggage claim, warranty or not!) It was lots of fun toting that thing through the airport! Luckily, I was on a direct flight and only had to carry it from the car to the plane! Upon arriving at the Charleston airport, I was met by a friend and Cyndi's boyfriend, Chris. I let him carry the computer as soon as I walked through the gate. (Boyfriends are good for something!) The computer was fixed shortly after I arrived in Charleston, but then I had to wait until I got back up here and was able to put the computer back together. In the meantime, there was a giant crisis at work and the family was playing 'which box is it in' as well as 'I think we can get there this way through that stack of boxes'! Then my parents showed up for a week of plumbing work! Thanks to Dad we now have a refinished bathroom upstairs, a new kitchen sink complete with the plumbing (instead of a radiator hose) and a filtered faucet, an icemaker that works, and numerous leaks repaired. Thanks to mom, the house is looking more organized! So I regrettably put off the homepage for a little while longer while I ran numerous errands to the hardware store. But here it is! I hope it was worth the wait. I've got at least another 200 boxes to unpack so I guess I'd better get back to that task. I'll see you next month (which will not be very long!)
Until then... Happy Hunting!
Your editor,
Marla Boots
