Jean Shroyer sends this tidbit. Don't we all wish we had someone this age to talk to!
Mrs. Vada Velma (Jernigan) Payton is 101 years of age and resides with her granddaughter in Red Oak, Texas. She is well as can be for age 101! Her daughter, Mrs. Joy Gustavus of Rowlett, TX gives an update as to Mrs. Payton's progress. Vada is the daughter of Wm. Henry Jernigan (Lineage of George Jernigan of Wayne Co., NC) and Amanda Elizabeth Southerland/Sutherland who resided in 1900's in Leonard, Fannin Co., TX. Vada became a nurse after attending nursing school and married Mr. Payton who divorced later. They gave issue to three children: Dorothy who died at age 12 yrs.; Joy Payton Gustavus of Rowlett, TX and Jim Payton of Elgin, IL who died of cancer in 1970's. (Jim Payton is buried in Elgin, IL).

Thanks to my husband Ed for sending this. For those of you fighting the Y2K bug and who isn't? This applies to all Windows 95, Windows 98 and NT based computers.
1. Click on Start, go to Setting and open Control Panel.
2. Double click the Regional Settings icon and then the Date Tab at the top.
3. Where it says "Short Date Sample", look and see if it shows a "two digit" year. Of course it does. Thats the default setting for Windows 95, 98 and NT installations. This date RIGHT HERE is the date that feeds all of your application software and WILL NOT rollover in the year 2000. It will rollover to 00.
4. Click on the button across from "Short Date Style" and select the option that shows, mm/dd/yyyy. (Be sure your selection has four Y's showing, not two.)
5. Click on "Apply" and then "OK"
Thats it. Easy enough to fix. However, every single installation of Windows worldwide is defaulted to fail Y2K rollover. If you know of someone else who would benefit from this fix feel free to forward this info.

she has run up against? She writes:
I have traced my GGgrandfather JARROTT JERNIGAN, b 1806-1811 to a marriage in Independence
Co. AR on 11/30/65 to Martha C. CLAY B. 1827. Must have been one whopper of a honeymoon at
the age of 59 years of age because I can't find him anywhere after that time. If you
have any info, please contact Liz.

Pat Boggs is looking for information about Parthena Jarnigan and George Corsbie. They are her husband's great-grandparents. George's son, James Joseph Corsbie, m. Sara Elizabeth Morris, and their child, Lenora Gertrude Corsbie, is Pat's mother-in-law. We know that Parthena "Thanie" Jarnigan's parents were William Richard and Sarah Virginia (Thompson) Jarnigan of Tishomingo Co., MS, and that Thanie was their oldest child. Thanie was b. c1854 in MS. If anyone knows where Thanie and George were married, or is researching these Corsbie/Jarnigan lines, Pat would like to hear from you.

That is all she knows about the family. Please contact June if you have any further information for her.

A few months back, we received information from Miranda Johnakin that there's a school named Johnakin Middle School in Marion, SC. Miranda contacted the school and found out that Mr. Milbia Johnakin was the first principal, and it was a high school at that time, but has since become the middle school in Marion. If anyone has further information about Milbia Johnakin and how he fits into the Jernigan clan, Sharon Tingley would like to hear from you.

Paul Burney is the third great grandson of James H. Burney, who married Sally E. Jernigan b. Dec. 31, 1821. In the Robertson Co., TN marriage records, there is a marriage of James H. Burney to Purahan Jernigan on 12-16-1839, sol. E. J. Williams. Are Sally E. and Purahan the same person? Paul would like to talk to anyone with information about this line of Burneys and Jernigans. Editor's Note
September! Where has this year gone! I have two birthdays this month in my family - my husband Ed on Labor Day (how appropriate!) and my mother. Happy Birthday to both of you and to all the other Jernigans celebrating this month.
Well, we have a house. At least that is if we get through closing by the end of next week! It turns out that we will not be Martians, rather, we will be Fombellians. We are now waiting for the appraiser's report to arrive so that we know what final things need to be done before closing. Hopefully it won't be much as the owner and Ed are both leaving town on the 12th and we wouldn't be able to close for several weeks after that! (Heaven help us!) If all goes well, I'll give everyone my new contact info in the next newsletter.
The girls start school tomorrow. Fortunately, the cousin that we are staying with, (yes we are now up in PA for the long run) is in the same school district. So the girls will not have to change schools. The bad news is that for now, the girls have to go about a half mile to the bus stop and be there by 6:40am. This wouldn't be too bad if they didn't have to go down an incredibly steep driveway (which is actually a road) for most of that distance, then onto a very dangerously busy road before turning down another road to get to the bus. So guess who will be up at that ungodly hour to drive them to the bus stop. I'm taking pity on them so that they won't have to get up an extra 20 minutes early to get to the bus. Now as for the trip back up...
The girls are settling in quite nicely so far. Through our church they have met several new people. They all are going to bible study and choir practice. They have even volunteered to help in the church's Funnel Cake Booth for the fair. Krystal wants to wear shirts that say, "The Boots Sisters Put the Fun in Funnel Cake".
We went to the school the other day to find their classes. Krystal and Kim are not happy that they have to take 10th grade English again since they require speech here which was not a requirement in the old school. (They were enjoying the idea of being a year ahead of the other students in their class.) Krystal also laments having two study halls during the day. But unfortunately, they couldn't fit any other courses into her schedule. Kim is reluctantly taking a computer course. It was the only option she had in one of the spaces in her schedule. But I think that she will enjoy it and when she is done, she can come work for me in my business. Cyndi seems relatively happy about her classes except for perhaps having Mrs. Wazaluski (the grandmother of all tough English teachers) for English. One thing is for sure, when she passes this class, she'll know everything about writing a college paper that she will need to know. Unfortunately, she is behind the other students in this area as in SC they didn't stress this too much. It will be a challenge, but I think that she can do it.
Cyndi went to see the "Phantom of the Opera" last night. She had a wonderful time. Krystal will also get to go see it as part of the gifted program at her school. (That part she likes!)
Kim has impressed me greatly by signing up for beginning swimming. This is a child who is scared to death of water! But she decided (all by herself, with no encouragement from me) that she needed to learn how to swim. Hopefully the teacher will be just as happy! I'll keep you updated...
My grandmother did well during her surgery. So we are all happy about that. She is not as happy about my moving. She keeps hoping that we will be moving back by next year. I don't think that I will be ready to repeat this process again that soon!
Sharon Tingley is back and if you haven't heard from her it is because she had well over 300 messages awaiting her return! Glad you are back Sharon!
I was horrified to discover that I was 9 months behind in updating the index! It is now up to date thank goodness!
Guess that is it for now. I'm still behind in emails, I'm sure. But hopefully soon I will have things settled and can get back to normal. (Whatever that is...)
Until then... Happy Hunting!
Your editor,
Marla Boots
