Information Exchange
The following information from Bond
County, Illinois Biographies provided Sharleen Coombs-Valentine with the missing
information she has been looking for. Sharleen's children descend from Louisa J. Jernigan,
daughter of Lewis H. Jernigan, and until this article was found, nothing was known about
Louisa's spouse except that his last name was Valentine/Vollentine. It is believed that
there is an error in this article, and that Napoleon B., Lizzie Nesbitt, and Emma Connor
should be listed as siblings of Louisa Jane Jernigan, rather than siblings of James M.
Vollentine as they are here. Census records for the family of Lewis H. Jernigan indicate
that these were Jernigan children.
"James M. VOLLENTINE, farmer, P.O. New Douglas. Prominent among the early settlers
and representative men of Bond County was William Bigford VOLLENTINE, a native of North
Carolina, son of Hardy VOLLENTINE. William B. emigrated from North Carolina to Tennessee,
where he married Fannie PLANT. While here he served in the war of 1812, and participated
in the battle of New Orleans. He emigrated to what is now Bond County when it was a
Territory. When he first came here, he remained for a time where Pocahontas Township now
is, and finally located in Town 6, Range 4, on Section 18, where he remained until his
death, which occurred in 1869. He was thrice married. His first wife bore him the
following children - George W., now of Christian County, Hardy of Wisconsin, Mrs.
Elizabeth CONDIFF of Montgomery County, Mrs. Nancy BROWN, now of Minnesota. His second
wife was Sophia SUGGS, a native of Tennessee, daughter of Josiah SUGGS. This union was
crowned with eleven children, those living are: James M., John J., Rebecca, Letta and
Christopher C. J. M. and C. C. reside in this township, Letta, wife of James RIDGEWAY, of
Pocahontas Precinct. His third marriage was to Elsie PRECKETT, a native of Kentucky, she
bore him five children - Jennette, Lois, Charles J., Margaret Jennette and Douglass.
William B. VOLLENTINE was one of the prominent men of the county, he became a large
landholder, and owned at one time 2,000 acres. He was a staunch Democrat, and took a
lively interest in the affairs of his county, he served some time as Justice of the Peace,
was County Commissioner and Associate Judge, and for many years was a leader in the
Methodist Episcopal Church, during the early part of his life. He was generally known all
over the country, being a thorough businessman - trading largely in stock, and farmed
quite extensively - was a man of great energey and perseverance, and a successful
financier, and the father of twenty-three children, of this number J. M. was of the second
set. He was born February 4, 1828, on the homestead, where he remained until his majority,
after which he attended school two years. In the spring of 1852 he went to California,
where he spent seven years in Nevada County, where he was engaged in trading and
freighting, and had a varied experience. He returned here to this township in 1859, and
since remained. He, for a time ran a store in New Douglas, and in 1866 he located on the
farm he now owns, which place was settled by William CARSON. In August 7, 1860, he married
Louisa J. JERNIGAN, born in Christian County, daughter of Lewis H. and Sallie (CURRY)
JERNIGAN. Lewis H. was born in Tennessee, son of Jesse. Lewis H. was a very early settler
in Christian County, Gabriel JERNIGAN, son of Jesse, was Sheriff of his county two terms,
and represented his county in the Legislature. Mr. VOLLENTINE has one brother, Nepoleon
B., he is a liveryman in New Douglas. Lizzie, a sister who resides in Marion County, Kan.,
wife of Ben NESBITT, and Emma, Mrs. William CONNOR, of same county. Mr. VOLLENTINE has a
good farm of several hundred acres, and is a thorough and progressive farmer, and one of
the best in the township. He is a member of the Methodist Church, and has been a class
leader and Steward for several years, and a great Sunday school worker, at Corrington
Chapel. Had three children born to him, two are living - James F. and William Lewis. His
only daughter, Sallie Sophia, was removed by death, August 16, 1876, aged nine
years."

1. The records you need for your
family history were in the courthouse that burned.
2. John, son of Thomas, the immigrant whom your relatives claim as the immigrant
ancestor, died on board ship at the age of twelve.
3. The public ceremony in which your distinguished ancestor participated when the
platform under him collapsed turned out to be a hanging.
4. Records show that the grandfather whom the family boasted, "He read the
Bible at four years and graduated from college at sixteen," was at the foot of his
class.
5. Your grandmother's maiden name for which you've searched for years was on an old
letter in a box in the attic all the time.
6. When at last you have solved the mystery of the skeleton in the closet, the
tight-lipped spinster aunt claimed,"I could have told you that all the time."
7. You never asked your father about his family because you weren't interested in
genealogy while he was alive.
8. The family story your grandmother wrote for the family never got past the typist.
She packed it away somewhere and promised to send a copy but never did.
9. The relative who had all the family photographs gave them to her daughter who had
no interest in genealogy and no inclination to share.
10. A great-uncle changed his surname because he was teased in school. He moved away, left
no address, and was never heard from again.

12. The only record you find for your great-grandfather is that his property was sold at a
sheriff's sale for insolvency.
13. The portion of the index you need is continued in the next issue only the publisher
died prior to publication.
14. When you find the obituary for your grandmother the information is garbled. Her name
is exchanged with her daughter's, the whereabouts of her sons is unknown, the date for her
father' birth indicates he was younger than she.
15. The only surname not found among the three billion in the Mormon Archives is yours.
16. The vital records director sends you a negative reply, having just been insulted by a

Janell Jernigan Sherwood sent Sharon Tingley the answer to her question in the last homepage about the Raymond Burns Jernigan who appears on that plaque by the Regency Bridge in TX. Janell writes:
Raymond Jernigan who is memorialized on the Regency Bridge was my Father's (Malcolm Luther Jernigan) brother and the son of Martin Luther Jernigan. Martin Luther's father was Noah, son of Aaron Jernigan (Florida). My father and grandfather were also on horseback when the old bridge collapsed, killing Raymond, badly wounding Luther. But my dad's horse fell 40 feet and landed on his feet--with my father still astride. The bridge is one of three swinging bridges in Texas still standing. Gov. Bush rededicated the bridge this year following repairs. It spans the Colorado River between Mills County and San Saba County in Texas. Raymond, I believe, was nine and my dad was 11 when the mishap occured.

begun to do research and have only come up with the name of Pearly's father, Richard C.
JERNIGAN, and the first name of her mother, Susanna M. Pearly was born about 1888 and I
believe she was born in Tenn. She died giving birth or shortly after the birth of my
husband's grandmother, Audrey Marlene STANLEY. Audrey Marlene STANLEY was born 19 May,

Barbara Fowler sends this report of the Jernigan reunion in Troy, AL.
The descendants of Calvin E. and Susan Bardin
Jernigan held a reunion in Troy, AL, July 9-11. It was a lively group that met at the
Holiday Inn in Troy on Friday night. It was great to meet old friends and make some new
ones.
We all went out for a buffet on Friday night before the Jernigan/Hughes girls arrived. We
understand that it took them a week to come from Texas. They don't get out very often and
it seems they made a profitable stop in Mississippi! They found us before we finished our
meal however and they certainly added some spice!
We then returned to our hospitality room where Kay Stone had her computer set up and we
looked up some families on her extensive database. Barbara Fowler had made a stop in
Dothan, AL library and had found some new information on a Jernigan family that we
followed. Kay also told us about the reprinting of Jernigan Reunion which she hopes to
have published by August.
On Saturday we had a luncheon at the motel. Virginia Jernigan Sanders, a descendent of
Moody Jernigan attended and told us about her Jernigan book that was published in 1996.
This family of Jernigans lived in the SE Alabama area and she has just recently learned
that they came from Marion, SC and are related to the Benjamin and Vashti Jernigan line.
In the afternoon, we toured Troy, visited some cemeteries, and enjoyed some swimming
before going to a local restaurant for another great meal.
The group enjoyed Troy and are thinking-or were thinking-of going back next year. Virginia
offered to contact the local library to have it opened for Saturday afternoon. Gayle
Schulz continued on to Pensacola, Fl and she writes that she had a great time there and
found lots of Jernigans. She is now thinking that perhaps the group should go to Pensacola
next year!
Denny Jernigan and Gayle Shultz did a great job-so great that we all voted for them to do
it again next year!

Editor's Note
OK, I tried, I really did! I sat down yesterday to put this edition of the Jernigan Homepage together and was doing quite well. It was 11:30 and I was actually going to get it online by midnight, thus accomplishing the proper publication date! Then... disaster struck! The computer froze and I hadn't saved my work. So this one is coming out on the 2nd instead of the 1st! Better luck next month!
Of course, next month we will probably be moving (that is my family). We are still in the process of looking for a house which means that I am spending a week in PA and a week in SC. This traveling back and forth is for the birds! (Actually, birds are smart enough to do it only twice a year!) When I left SC this time, I vowed not to return until we had a house. I'm hoping that that time will be this week as I left my youngest with my Mom and I wouldn't want her to feel abandoned!
House-hunting is more of an adventure than I bargained for! Between the consideration of where the girls should go to school, having room for the pets to roam, finding a house with enough bedrooms for all, finding a house that doesn't have that awful orange or green carpet from the 60's with pink. orange and maroon wallpaper on the walls, in our price range...well, gee you wouldn't think it would be that hard! Now it is possible that I will be a Martian! Yes, there is a town here called Mars. No I don't know why, but they have great schools. I don't know if the mascot is a little green man or not...
As to the moving of the Jernigan Homepage. I know that the person who offered me her assitance in moving it thinks that I am a nutcase, (and probably rightly so) but I haven't had the time to contact her and talk with her about it. Sorry Candice! As soon as things settle down around here, I will call you! I will let everyone know when the move is planned, so don't worry!
My grandmother is having laser surgery on her cataracts this week. That is why Kim, my youngest is staying with her grandmother. She is helping my mom with my grandmother, and from what I understand, beating the daylights out of both of them in Canasta!
If you know of any reunions coming up, please send me the information. Or if you have any reports like Barbara's, I'll be happy to include them on the homepage as well. Information is always welcomed and thank you for putting "for the homepage" in your subject lines of your emails! That has been a great help to me.
I know that I haven't responded to many emails lately. I apologize for my lack of writing skills. But my time has been very limited and I am trying to do the best I can. If you have noticed that Sharon Tingley hasn't been around much lately it is because she is off having the time of her life on a month long vacation! We miss you Sharon! Hurry back!
Well I'd better load this and start that house search again. I'm sure that God has the perfect place out there. We just need to find it! I am skimping on updating evertything else except for the homepage. Please forgive me this one more thing until I am settled. See you next month!
Until then... Happy Hunting!
Your editor,
Marla Boots
