Edwards of Springfield, TN provided the following information about David Jernigan of
Wayne Co., NC > Robertson Co., TN > Fayette Co., TN.
The following article was printed in the Fayette Co. TN Newsletter, April, 1976
"DAVID JERNIGAN: GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
Deep in the woods of the Ames Plantation stands a solitary tombstone. For 134 years it has
endured the elements to tell the story inscribed on its face. It reads:
In
Memory of
DAVID JERNIGAN
Who Departed This Life
April the 1st 1842
In the 53rd year of his
Age
He was born in Wayne Co.
N.C & Raised in Tnn.
Such an epitaph holds great
significance when one considers the life and times of David Jernigan.
Lying on a ridge overlooking the North Fork of Wolf River, the grave of David Jernigan has
gone unnoticed for many, many years. His life and accomplishments were not so obscure;
however, for Jernigan played an important role in the settlement and formation of Fayette
County.
Jernigan was one of the earliest settlers in the territory that later became Fayette
County. It must have been a ride of only a mile or so that Monday, December 6, 1824, when
he went to the home of his neighbor, Robert C. Thornton, and there participated in the
formal organization of Fayette County. Already holding a commission as magistrate
from the Governor, Jernigan must have been well respected by his neighbors since he was
chosen by them to serve as trustee of the new county, a position he held until 1829.
Jernigan's neighbors in 1824 were probably relatives, including one named John Jernigan.
Near him also lived other early settlers such as John T. Patterson whose little settlement
near the North Fork later became Pattersonville.
Settlers continued to arrive in the new county. The next year, 1825, Jernigan saw an
opportunity to further serve his neighbors, and he and Wm. Owen built the county's first
water-mill for grinding corn on the North Fork of Wolf River. That mill must have
been built within a few hundred yards of where Jernigan's tombstone stands today.
An old roadway today runs down the ridge near his grave and disappears into North Fork
Bottom. Corn for grinding was probably carried down this very road to the mill. Across the
bottom, another old road is still evident which leads in the general direction of
Somerville. Near Stuart Chapel, it runs into another paved road which local people
still call Old Jernigan Road, probably for Jernigan's mill which was once located near its
terminus.
Much mystery surrounds Jernigan's life after 1829, for he is not mentioned in Fayette
County history after that date. Perhaps he was content with farming and running his mills,
for he owned another one in Hardeman County which he had built in 1824.
In 1842, David Jernigan died and was laid to rest in the county he helped build. Although
his monument stands alone, he was apparently buried in a small cemetery, for at least
twenty-five other graves are evident, none with markers.
After spending most of his adult life in the county he helped form, David Jernigan was
buried on an ivy-covered hillside alongside his neighbors and relatives.
The source quoted is: The Goodspeed Histories of Fayette and Hardeman Counties of
Tennessee"
To answer another question, Yes, David James Jernigan, Jr. was married FOUR times.
1. Unknown (died shortly after marriage in Tennessee, undocumented, according to family
tradition).
2 Martha J.Carroway
3. Martha J. Brougher,
4. Kate Brougher (Martha J.'s sister).
Family sources state: "Granny said that her grandfather was killed by one of his
son-in-laws". This is strange. Narcissa Jernigan (daughter of David) married
John H. Morgan on March 27, 1842 and David was killed 5 days later on April 1, 1842
from a wound inflicted by a man named Sam Morgan. Same person? Needs more research to be
sure. It's highly possible!
From the Commercial Appeal, Wednesday May 10, 1967 column, News of Bygone Days.
"David Jernigan of Fayette County, Tennessee was so badly wounded in a fracas with a
man by the name of Sam Morgan, that he died the following day. We are sufficiently
acquainted with the facts and cannot lay them before the public" May 10, 1842

Bill Jernigan sent me 9 pages of Jernigan Census Records which once they were typed out turned into 17 pages of Jernigan census records! I hope that this will help some of you! I realize that this will make for a very long homepage, but I didn't want to split them up for reasons you'll understand later.

Sharleen
Coombs-Valentine has found more Jernigans in her family tree... Here is what she
wrote:
"Lately, I've been researching on my mother's side; actually my mother's
paternal-grandmother's side (Ellen Hood); I purchased a book on the Hood lineage called
The Tunis Hood Family Lineage and Traditions, 1960. I was surprised when I was
looking at one Hood family line: Joab Cauley b. 1812 in MS m. Mary Jane Hood b. 1825
in Tallapoosa Co.,AL, daughter of William Hood II and Martha Hood, d. 1861 in Meridan, MS.
"Known children and descendants are: Their daughter, Martha Melissa Cauley
(Pepper) m. 2nd Jan 22, 1863 David Brown b. Jan 2, 1808 d. April 3, 1891 in Pleasant
Grove, TX. She was his 3rd wife (he had 19 children by 3 wives) One of their
children, David Henry Brown b. Jan 1, 1864 in Grenada, MS d. Jan.,29, 1936 in Lubbock, TX
m. April 11,1888 in Durango, TX , Rachel Jane Stoval b. Aug 31, 1870 in Coryell Co., TX,
d. May 28 1937 in Lubbock. TX. Their daughter, Elizabeth Jane Brown b. Aug. 13, 1890 in
Wilderville, TX. m.Oct, 2, 1906 Richmond Lee Hardin b. Dec. 23, 1870 in Coryell, TX. d,
April 14, 1953 in Denton, TX. Their 2nd child,Rachel Evadina Hardin b. April 9, 1910 in
Gatesville, TX m. June 1, 1933, Lewis W. Jernigan Jr. b.? they lived in Corpus Christi,
TX, record of 3 children:
1. Lewis Willis Jernigan III b. March 25, 1937 in Arnsas Pass, TX. 2. Joseph David
Jernigan b. Dec., 25, 1946 in Corpus Christi, TX. 3. Henry Lee Jernigan b. Oct.,17,
1949 in Corpus Christi, TX. I have more info. on their Hardin Aunts and Uncles and
cousins, too.
"Anyway, I thought I would write and give you this info. on these Jernigans that are
in my side of the tree; maybe someone else is looking for these Jernigans."
Sharon Tingley found a line of Lewis Willis Jernigans
in the book The "Leaves of the Jernigan Tree" by Verna Jernigan is wondering if
there would be a connection. It goes like this:
Lewis Jernigan, Jr. b. 1778 Johnson Co., NC and wife Frances Douglas (Lewis and Frances
later moved to TN)
Their son Jesse Jernigan b. 1808 and wife Attilla lived in Coffee/Cannon Co., TN
Their son Lewis Willis Jernigan b. 1840 m. Mary Whitfield, had 3 sons:
Robert W. b. 1867, moved to Jackson Co. AL
James
David
Robert W. above moved to Jackson Co., AL and was minister of the Church of Christ there.
He had a son named Willis Green Jernigan who was also a Minister of the Church of
Christ in Lytle, TX (near San Antonio).
David above had children named: Lewis Willis, Herman, Robert, Weldon Lee, and Mary
Irene.
Perhaps this last Lewis Willis, son of David, had a son named Lewis Willis Jr. and a
grandson Lewis Willis III????
If anyone has further information on the Lewis Willis Jernigans in TX, please contact
either Sharon at Shrun@aol.com, or Sharleen at heart@alaska.net.

Tina Smith is looking for information on an Annie Jernigan Whittington. Actually, she's more interested in information on her husband, Ace or Acey Whittington, b. 1892, Butler County, Alabama. She assumes that Annie would be about the same age and from roughly the same area. They had children Robert, Marie, J.T., Joe and Cartis. Any links you have with the Whittington line would be much appreciated.

West Virginia had special medals made up for the Union soldiers that fought for West Virginia during the Civil War. Many of their soldiers were from out-of-state and they were not able to track them down when the medals were ready to be presented in 1866. The Department of Culture and History, through the Archives and History Library, is attempting to complete the task begun in 1866 by awarding the medals to the veterans' heirs who submit documented claims establishing a line of descent from the veteran to themselves. Persons documenting the most direct line of descent from one of the Union soldiers on this list will receive the medal at the end of a six-month period following submission of the claim to the Archives and History Library, Department of Culture and History, The Cultural Center, Charleston, WV 25305.Marla Boots has checked the list to see if there are any Jernigans of any spelling on there, but there is not. However, you may have ancestors of another line on the list. These medals are beautiful and are still in the original packaging that they came in! It is well worth the effort to find out if your ancestor is on this list! And even more so if you do have one! To see if you have an ancestor on the list, go to: http://www.wvlc.wvnet.edu/history/medals.html

Oldham are your contacts for the Coffee County, Tennessee Jernigan Cemetery
Association Formation Meeting. Here are the details on the meeting: Descendants of
Alexander C. Jernigan of Johnston County, North Carolina and Coffee County Tennessee are
planning a Cemetery Association Formation Meeting for the first weekend of May, 2000. The
purpose of the get together will include work on repairing/restoring the deteriorated
Jernigan Cemetery across from the original Alexander C. Jernigan home site. Plans for the
meeting include the formation of a Cemetery Association, for those interested, to continue
a degree of maintenance of the cemetery. The meeting will also include an opportunity to
exchange and share information, and to perhaps plan a more extensive Middle Tennessee Area
Jernigan Reunion. The original Alexander C. Jernigan home site is the property and home
site so beautiful described by Verna Thompson Jernigan in her book, "Leaves of the
Jernigan Tree".
The meeting will be held at the Civil War Confederate Cemetery off exit I 24, Gossburg,
Coffee County, Tennessee, Saturday, 9:00 AM.
Please wear working and hiking clothes/shoes and bring garden/repair tools, and cleaning
supplies, if you have them. Mostly, your presence, willingness, labor and Jernigan family
information will be greatly appreciated!
We plan a pot luck picnic on Saturday and Sunday for lunch.
Linda has located the grave sites of Needham Jernigan ( (son of Alexander) and Mary
"Polly" Jernigan (daughter of Lewis Jernigan) . She and her husband have visited
the Alexander C. Jernigan home site and discovered the Jernigan cemetery. They has also
discovered some very interesting history regarding the Jernigan land in this area. The
surrounding area, she reports, is beautiful and full of history. We hope to locate the
nearby grave sites of Alexander C. Jernigan and Elizabeth Farmer Jernigan.
Linda and Judith will supply you with directions, maps, and information regarding the
Jernigan Cemetery and the Civil War Confederate Cemetery, and the meeting. Please contact
them regarding your interest and participation.

Editor's Note
We had our first snow that stuck on the day that we were unpacking the moving van from our second moving trip. It didn't hinder us too bad and the cold wasn't unbearable, so after unloading the van, we sat back and enjoyed it. It was quite beautiful. There is still a little bit of it still on the ground, but most of it has melted.
We wondered how the cats and dog would react to the snow. Sasha, our dog, didn't seem to even notice. The cats did! They do not like snow at all! Much like me, I am sure that they will be spending the snow days inside looking out! It's not that I hate snow, I just like to look at it, not play, work and drive in it!
We spent Thanksgiving back in SC and I regret to say, it was not as I would have liked. Normally, I would have spent the holiday relaxing and spending time with my family. This trip I was up to my eyeballs in computer problems, business meetings, packing and moving! This was mainly due to the fact that Ed couldn't get any time off from work and we had to drive home early Thanksgiving day and return on Sunday. We arrived home around 5:00pm to a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner prepared by my mother with the help of my grandmother. After that we talked for a little while, but as I had been up since 2:00am that morning, I was ready for bed early! The girls refused to give up their "Day after Thanksgiving shopping trip" so we were off at 5:30am on Friday to hit the stores. I have to say, I have never seen shoppers like I saw that day. Kind of made me sad. Not much Christmas spirit out there that day! The rest of the weekend was spent mainly packing. Because of the holiday, we had to drive 40 minutes away to pick up our moving van and car transport. Wouldn't you know, when I walked in the door, it was to discover that I left my credit card at the rental place. So I got to make the trip twice! I told the guy at the rental place that I would be glad when all this moving was done so that I could figure out which box I had packed my brain in! After a harrowing 17 hour trip back to PA, we were grateful to arrive home in one piece. The truck had several mishaps with rocking dangerously from side to side on several overpasses. Only Ed's skill and my prayers (I was behind him in our truck) kept the truck from turning over I'm sure! And believe me, I was very thankful for that!
Events in the Boots household this month are all three girls made the honor roll this time - Cyndi on the A honor roll which tickled her immensely. Krystal and Kim found out their class ranking - 7th and 8th out of a class of 160+. I thought that this was quite remarkable considering the move from SC to PA. Kim is 7th and Krystal is 8th. Krystal maintains that the only reason Kim is 7th is because her name is before Krystal's alphabetically. Both have a 4.0. Cyndi still hasn't decided what to do about college. She gets tons of mail and phone calls everyday. I guess she'll figure it out soon.
Kim made the Riverside Girls basketball team. Unfortunately, she was injured in practice and has been benched by her doctor and coach for the next couple of weeks while her knee heals. Still, she is excited about being on the team even if it only means cheering from the sidelines for a little while!
This month we will celebrate my brother's birthday. Mark was born on the 8th of December and he and his family are enjoying their new house as well. He and his wife Beth just closed on their first house just before Thanksgiving! I guess we are just a moving bunch! Benjamin, my nephew and Mark and Beth's son will also celebrate his birthday this month on the 23rd. I understand that Benjamin delights in playing in the mud in their new backyard and much to his mother's chagrin, he tracks it inside all over his mama's white carpet!
Well, I had a bit of an adventure with trying to get this edition up! I had my computer in for some repairs and got it back in total disarray! My adapter for my keyboard was missing (back in SC), so I started looking around for another keyboard to use. (My children will not be happy when they discover that I have taken their keyboard!) After spending quite a bit of time trying to get my computer settings straight, I tried to access Aol only to realize that I couldn't remember my password! (Yes, I'm braindead!) I have to admit, Aol's customer service has gotten a lot quicker than it used to be! Well I finally am about ready to put this edition online. It is hard to believe that this is the end of yet another year!
With the snow this past week, I was reminded of Christmas cards I have received in the past. I hope that your Christmas is full of blessings, joy and love. Please remember that this is the season of giving and that God gave us his most precious son. Please don't forget that in all of the rush at Christmas time.
Hopefully, there will be a January edition on the first. I'll probably load it before midnight on New Year's Eve just in case. Just think, the next time we meet will be in the year 2000! Amazing huh! Merry Christmas to all!
Until then... Happy Hunting!
Your editor,
Marla Boots
