Billy Norrell writes, "Recently an article
appeared in the Tri City Ledger which is published in Flomaton, Alabama (near the Florida
Line). The article under "Jay Fla. News", is about a benefit held for Grayson
Jernigan who will be having a kidney transplant on July 1st. I am including part of the
article:"
" There was a benefit held at the Jay School auditorium on June 11 for Grayson
Jernigan, who will be having a kidney transplant on July 1st (if all goes as planned).
Grayson attended Chumuckla Elementary School where he was in kindergarden when he became
sick. He is now being home-schooled due to having dialysis three times a week. Each
treatment lasts four to five hours. Grayson will have to stay in the hospital for about a
month after his kidney transplant. This will take place in Birmingham, Alabama, at UAB
Medical Center. There is an account set up at Sun Bank in Milton, Florida, to help with
these expenses if you would like to contribute."
Cards and letters may be mailed to the UAB Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama. The
address is UAB Hospital;
619 South 19th Street; Birmingham, AL 35233
(Thanks to Jeri Corbitt for finding the address of the hospital for us!)

Barbara Fowler sends this peach recipe.
Southern Cooking, by Mrs. S.R. Dull 1928
Jernigan Sweet Pickled Peaches
Select ripe, firm fruit, peel and put into jar
closely. Use a sweet Spiced vinegar, tie whole spices in cheese cloth, bring vinegar to
boil, pour over the peaches, repeat for 9 monrnings. Keep fruit well under the vinegar.
Cloves stuck into peaches (half dozen into each peach) make them look pretty. When this is
done, do not add cloves to vinegar. Do not have to seal.
I was searching for a pickled peach recipe when I found this one in my mother's favorite
old cookbook. In the preface of the book the following information is given about Mrs.
Dull. I thought that this information and the date might be a clue as to which Jernigan
family originated this recipe. Mrs. Dull was born in Laurens County, Georgia. Her
father was Ira Eli Stanley, and her mother was Mary Breazeal. She is granddaughter of Ira
Stanley, son of James Stanley, who moved to Laurens County from Newbern, NC. Mrs. Dull was
the editor of the Home Economics page of the Atlanta Journal, which housekeepers read
before turning to the society pages.

Roxanna J. , born April 1873, in TN, married Charles Merriman Feb 19, 1891 in Fayette Co.
Illinois. Children are Hazel Merriman, born 1894, died 1912 and Illinois Merriman, born
Dec. 1899.
Hazel had a child, Lucille Merriman, born May 23, 1912. adopted by Joseph and Esther Egan
November 8, 1912. The adoption deed states that both parents are dead, however Lucille's
birth certificate does not list a father and lists her as illegitimate.
Lucille married Lee Rea, born 1903 in Quitman Co. Mississippi, on Nov. 24, 1938, one child
Florence Rea, born 1939, divorced 1941 (about), died July 14, 1978.
Florence Rea married John Armbruster 1960, 4 children, one is me. For ease:
Joe Armbruster< Florence Rea<Lucille Merriman<Hazel Merriman< Roxanna
Jernigan.
Two other bits of info that I am working on: Roxanna remarried a Weiland by 1910 and was
widowed by 1920 with additional children listed, but I am not sure of the parentage of the
children. Additionally, there is a child Russell Merriman listed on 1920 census as a
Grandchild and 9 years old. At that time Roxanne was a Weiland and the other daughter was
too young, so it is possible that Hazel had another child, but Roxanne kept this one.
If anyone has any further info on this line, please contact
Joe.

Nikki writes, "I'm not sure if you can help me or not, but I am trying to find information on a Fannie Jernigan, who married my great grandfather Noah Marsh in Smith County, Tn on May 24,1885. This is all I have on her, so if any of these names, or dates look familiar please let me know.

Lynda Spann came across some family names on a couple of back issues of the Jernigan Homepage. Does anyone have any other information on the PUGHS OR TUNSTALLS? If you do, please contact Lynda.

Sharon Tingley sends this web site and says, "Check out this web site on Lorenzo Dow. Remember that Needham had a son Lorenzo D. and it is speculated that he was probably named after this well-known itinerant preacher, Lorenzo Dow. They say that thousands of babies were named after him."http://www.acun.com/dentons/Lorenzo%20Dow.htm

Editor's Note
The decision has been made. We are moving to Pennsylvania. Ed has accepted the job offer from Checkpoint. We are told that he will mainly stay in the Pittsburgh area and won't be travelling as he was before. This means that he will be home most nights! Friday, we leave to head north to start house shopping! Keep us in your prayers that we can find a house quickly that we can afford! We need to get up there and settled before school starts again.
It has been very busy around here in the Boots household with packing things up in boxes! There is not a single room that doesn't have at least one box sitting in it! We have very little "moving" around space as we prepare to move! It has gotten to a point that the girls groan when they see boxes sitting on the side of the road or in a store, because they know that I'll be stuffing them in the car to take them home. We also have been long range "house-shopping" on the internet. Everyone has their criteria for the house. Krystal wants a swimming pool, Cyndi seems to be very fond of hardwood floors (I don't know so don't ask me why), Ed wants property and a garage (a four car one will do), Kim insists on a four bedroom house. It seems that the 15+ years as well as the 8 months that she spent in the womb is enough togetherness for her. She wants her own room! I will just be glad to have my own roof over my own head and the knowledge that I am where I am going to be! I'm so tired of this limbo life I've been leading lately!
We have other wonderful news in our family. My nephew, Matthew Mcleod Dubis arrived on June 3rd! He was 8 lbs, 4 oz and was 20" long. (Why are babies long when the rest of us are tall?). He is a joyful addition to my brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Beth's family. His big brother Benjamin is quite tickled to have him around too!
Other celebrations this month will be my grandmother Jernigan's birthday. She is a joy to be around with her fantastic sense of humor and love for all of us. Happy Birthday Grandma!
Sharon Tingley has done all of us quite a service! She has completed an every name index of the Jernigan Homepage. I haven't had time to put it online yet, but hope to have it up when I return from my 4th of July/house hunting trip to PA. It should make everyone's search of the pages by ancestor's name much easier! Sharon, there are no words to amply thank you enough, but suffice to say, I am in your debt!
The Jernigan Homepage is probably moving as well in the near future. I have been extended an offer that is too good to refuse. I'll elaborate more later, but I will make sure that all of you are notified of the change! If you aren't on my mailing list, drop me an email and I'll see to it that you are put on there!
For those of you who are sending me information to put on the homepage (and I am happy to hear from anyone with info!), please put "For the Homepage" in the subject line. This will make it easier for me to identify it amongst all the other stuff I receive.
Krystal's softball team finished in first place for her age group. Go Hot Rods! It was a very exciting tournament.
Kim is off on a mission trip this week in Pikeville, TN. She is there with a handful of youths from our church working on a construction project for a family in need. When she left she said that she thought that they would be painting and building a wheelchair ramp. I was very impressed with Kim. I told her that if she wanted to go on the mission trip, she would have to earn the $200.00. She agreed and went to work doing odd jobs to earn most of the money. To make up for what she didn't earn, she put all the money she received for her birthday towards the trip and some family members contributed the rest. Kim wants to make mission trips a regular event in her life.
I will be leaving Friday morning to head for Tennessee to pick Kim up on the way (so to speak) to PA. The route that I am taking to Pikeville takes me pretty much in the footsteps of my great-great grandfather, Blake Jernigan as he fought with the 32nd Ga during the civil war. Starting in Kennesaw Mountain to Cartersville, Adairsville, Calhoun, Resaca, Dalton, Tunnel Hill and ending up in Chickamauga and Chattanooga! I plan to have a great day before picking Kim up in the evening. I'll be sure to fill you in on the next homepage.
I hope that all of you have a wonderful 4th of July! Remember all of the men who fought so bravely (especially the Jernigans!) for us to have this day to celebrate. But be careful! I want all of you to enjoy the barbeques, picnics and fireworks, but please stay safe! I'll see ya next month!
Until then... Happy Hunting!

Marla Boots
