Martha Duncan Morris sends this info:
"I believe that Louisa Shake who married Alex Jernigan, Jr. is the daughter of William Shake, who is shown on the 1840 Coffee Co. census. A possible sibling of Louisa is Thomas Shake, who is shown on the 1860 Greene Co., TN census. I am following a lead that William b. abt 1795 in KY was the son of Christopher Shake and Elizabeth Shreader and married Sarah Martha Smith in 1814 in Jefferson Co., KY. If this is the correct William, his siblings would have been Catherine, Mary, George Wallace, John, Jacob, Adam, Christopher Columbus, and David. I have birthdates and marriage info for these people. I found a PA immigration record for a Christopher Shake in 1743 on a ship from Rotterdam with lots of German immigrants--perhaps Kentucky Christopher's father?"
Martha also writes that her ancestor, Asbesena Victoria Jernigan (dau of Alex Jernigan, Jr.), and her husband Benjamin D. Hill did not go to Texas, but their daughter Josie Louise Hill (married Thomas Rowland) did. They lived briefly in Hill County and then moved to Cherokee Co. where he died in 1932 and she died in 1945.
Martha would like to hear from other descendants of Alex Jernigan, Jr. She has more information to share.

Additions & Corrections to~
by Verna Jernigan
Note: Verna Jernigan compiled this list from the letters and comments of various relatives after they read her book.
Pg. 35, #1: Mary E. Jane married three times. 1. Parker; 2. Hill; 3. Daniel. Her children were William Everett and Roxanna Jane Parker; Jennie (Virginia) and Josephine Hill; Martin A. L., Edward M. C., and Henrietta Belle Daniel.
Page 35, #3: After the death of Elizabeth Evaline, William Elliott married Joanna Brixey. Their children were Sula, Grady, Estill. They were not related to the Jernigan family but were half-sisters and brothers to Elizabeth Evalines children.
Page 35, #4: John Lawrence Mortimers wife, Martha E. Elliott, was a sister to the above William Elliott. This explains the term "double first cousins" which we have always heard.
Page 36, #7: Wiley Washington died Feb. 22, 1908. He had a son Neugent, who still lives in Euless, Texas.
Page 36, #8: Belle, who was reared by James Modrell, was Henrietta Belle Daniel, daughter of Mary E. Jane. Belle married William Green and their son was James Clarence Green.
Page 36, #9: Tennessee Catherine Floyd had another son named Rubin.
Page 36, #10: Marion Alexander went to Texas and married Mary J. Fuller. His daughter, Mrs. W. J. Eden, still lives in Euless, Texas. He died July 1, 1917.
Page 36, #11: Newton Columbuss daughter, Minnie Medley, had some more children: Emmitt, Ewell, Lee, Taylor, Ethel Jones, Haskell.
Page 37, #12: William Calvin went to Texas and married Betty Fuller. She died recently. Their daughter, Mrs. Ida May Crawford, still lives in Texas.
Page 37, Alice J. not shown. She married Will Wiser and lives in Euless, Texas. She is buried in the same cemetery in Euless as Marion Alexander, William Calvin, and Martha E. Ford Jernigan. They all moved to Euless after the death of Alexander C. Jernigan, Jr.

Here are some comments that Kay Stone has on the info sent by Verna Jernigan above (the additions and corrections to her book).
1. Additional children of Wiley Washington.
Rubin, b May 1892
Davic, b. Jul 1896
Castaria (f) b. Nov 1898
Thurston, b. Nov 1898
Listed in Dallas Co., 1900
2. The Ulys b. 1856 noted by Verna. Could this be Wiley? There is no Ulys listed in the
1860 or 1870 census with Alexander. Wiley W is listed 1860 as age 4. 1870 Wiley is listed
as age 12. No sign of a Ulys.
3. Newton Columbus. md/1 Amanda Glasgow; m/2 Dillie Roberts
4. Alexander is absent in the 1880 census, but 2nd wife Martha is listed with Mary age 25,
Marion age 15, Wm age 13, Burgess age 10, Hettie age 7 (this is Hettie Alice), and 2
children not named by Verna; Marcus age 3 and Harris age 5.

Stacie Smith has the following puzzle. If anyone has any missing pieces, let her know!
How I think I fit into the puzzle is as follows:
Arthur Alford Jernigan and Sarah Ann Howell Parents of James Wesley Jernigan who married Margret Ann Howell James Wesley's child Wrigdon Wesley Jernigan married Emma Ellen Fields Wrigdon Wesley and Emma Ellen Fields were my great-great grandparents My great grandfather was Buford B. Jernigan
I am still checking on this to make sure I have it right.
Letter from Buford B. Jernigan to Jimmy Lee Jernigan: Arthur Alford Jernigan was dad's grandfather. This was sent to mama by Lee Jernigan, dad's cousin. He is about 90 years old, college educated, and was working on it before dad was grown. How he got all the info, I don't know. The Field geneology was written by mama's dad before he died, and a copy given to mama by someone. I don't remember who. In the Jernigan business, I copied the first part of the letter written by Lee to mama, and the geneology as Lee wrote it till dad and mama, and I wrote the rest. I wish you would type me a copy of the Jernigans, and return the one of the Fields. With lots ot love to all and kiss the babys for me. Buford
From: Lee Jernigan To: Emma Jernigan Orange City, Fla.
Dear cousin Emma: By the time your letter reached me, it had rubbed in the mail till it (the writing) had almost rubbed out and I could not read it. Only this morning I reckon it was read, and I am answering. Yes I have written a lineage of the Jernigans, and I believe I can answer your questions. Wesley's grandfather was the 25th family of the Jernigans.
I mean he was the 25th generation in our line of the Jernigans from Byron, Prince of Denmark, son of King Scoland of Denmark, 1000 years ago. So to answer your questions I will begin with ARTHUR ALFORD JERNIGAN, whose wife was SARAH ANN HOWELL of North Carolina, U.S.A., came to Hardeman Co., western Tenn. 1821. Their children were:
1. LILPHIA JANE (name spelled wrong?): married JACOB HUGHEY
2. WRIGDON RUFUS: married MARTHA LOUISE HOWELL
3. WILLIAM CRAWFORE: married MARY ANN PHILLIPS
4. JAMES WESLEY: married MARGRET ANN HOWELL
5. MARY ANN married JOHN H. COATS-HENRY JOHNSTON
6. MARSHALL HENRY: married CYNTHIA TENNYSON
7. GEORGE WASHINGTON: married VIRGINIA READ ISBELL
8. ARTHUR ALFORD: married JULIA ANN OWENS
9. JOHN RAINFORE: married MARGRET PIERCE
10., 11., 12. INFANTS NOT NAMED, DIED.
Note: James Wesley was the father of Wesley; Marshall Henry the father of Lee Jernigan.
James Wesley & Margret Jernigan's children were:
1. LOUISA
2. RICHARD C.
3. MARGRET N.
4. RILEY
5. NELOUS
6. ROBERT L.
7. FANNIE
8. OPHELIA
9. WRIGDON WESLEY married EMMA ELLEN FIELDS
Wrigdon Wesley and Emma Jernigan's children were:
1. SWDA(?) (died an infant) (ADA?)
2. WILLIAM DEWEY
3. BUFORD BURCH, married MARY IDALURE DEEL (this is Stacie's great grandfather)
4. AUBRA LESTER
5. NEELY CURTIS
6. LALA
Buford and Mary Idalure Jernigan's children were:
1. JOHN WESLEY: married JOE ETTA BAILY
2. IMA FAY: married LEONARD RAY (there were other marriages; this is Stacie's grandmother)
3. BUFORD (died--he drowned on farm)

THOMAS JARNAGIN, written by the late Lee Leeper Powers (316 pages, hardback) can be ordered by sending a check for $45.00 to: Alan P. Moore, 5878 Leepers Ferry Road, Morristown, TN 37813.
Alan Moore is a grandson of Lee Powers. Alan's mother, Marilyn Powers Moore, writes that they have a 200-year-old family farm that is a remnant of one of Thomas Jarnagin's land grants. The old Jarnagin family cemetery is about a mile away. Every summer they have Jarnagin visitors who are looking for the cemetery and the site of Mt. Harmony, the original Jarnagin home.

Elmeda, Martha Jane, Nancy Nellie and John Quincy. Very likely that Harriet is the daughter of Daniel Jernigan and Nancy McKay of Dale Co., Alabama. My husband Ed sent me this website. There are a bunch of Jernigans on there! He says that you should search under first and last name as well as just under the last name as only 75 names will come up at a time.

Editor's Note
Hmmm...once again I find myself having to put a 2 on the date instead of a 1. I hope that this will not become a pattern! Things have been so wild around here that I have had to call in the zookeeper a couple of times!
My job is keeping me snowed under as we are in the middle of several major projects. (Sad when your life gets in the way of your hobbies isn't it!) Charleston-online is still in operation, but we have started a new consulting company for the webpage design as well as other business opportunities. So I am now a consultant as well as a webmaster.
The girls are out of school for the most part. Cyndi has one more exam tomorrow and then she will be done. So at least all of the end of the year running around for school will be done for awhile.
Krystal's softball team is about to start the championship playoffs tonight. So once that is over, things will really start to slow down on the kid front! They won all but one of their games this season. The team that they are playing against lost two games, but are very good. Hopefully we will be the champions, but if not, it was still a terrific season!
The only birthday this month in our family is my Dad's which falls on the 16th. Happy Birthday Dad! Also, Happy Father's Day to all of you Jernigan Dad's who are furthering this great genealogical project we are delving into! Please inspire your children to hold their history near and dear!
Ed has a job offer in PA, but we are undecided still what to do. It is from his old company and we just aren't sure that he wants to go back there. But a decision will have to be made soon so that we will know where to live and where the girls will be going to school next year! As I keep promising, I'll keep you updated.
Until then... Happy Hunting!
Your editor,
Marla Boots
