Linda Jernigan Hlozansky sends the following interesting tidbits! She writes,
"I've become very interested in our English cousins and I've found some interesting things on the internet. On a Jernegan search I found that Queen Mary's will is on the internet. It is very far down in the hits because it is a nine page document and S. Henry Jernegan Kt Master of the horses is mentioned on p. 6. In her will she left him 200 lbs for good service.
Also I've found the Jerningham family of Costessey Hall very interesting. The family was Roman Catholic which was a problem after HenryVIII. When looking at Costessy Hall on the internet I found a research article in the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians December 1995, vol 54, no.4. A quick phone call to Ga. Tech down the road and to my amazement they had the Journal. I xeroxed the 21 page article containing pictures of Costessey Hall and Chapel, but best of all were the portraits of Sir William Jerningham 1736-1809 and Edward Jerningham 1774-1822 that the article contained. The article is very well written and researched by Mary Shepard, of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her study was of the collection of Medieval Glazing (stained glass) in the chapel. Not everyone will be able to find this journal, but if they live near a major university ...maybe.
Also, some may be interested in the Jerningham Letters. The Jerningham Letters span the years 1776-1833 and were originally collected by Charlotte, Lady Bedingfield (1770-1854), the only daughter of Sir William and Lady Jerningham of Costessey Hall, Norwich. Charlotte was the wife of Sir Richard Bedingfield of Oxburgh Hall. The letters are now the property of the National Trust. They consist of ten volumes of jourals of Mrs. Bedingfield and letters from her mother, other members of the large Jerningham and Bedingfield families, and her children. When originally published in two volumes by Egerton Castle about a century ago, the editor selected letters that delt with public events and history. Both families were Roman Catholic, and the collection is a study of Catholic Spirituality, education, marriage, and anti-Catholicism in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It is also a valuable insight into the history of Norfolk, England and women's studies. Recently a portion of the collection was printed in an article by Margaret J. Mason , Recusant History, Vol. 21, no. 4, Oct 1993, pp.503-55. The article is entitled, Nuns and Vocations of the Unpublished Jerningham Letters. I found this article at Georgia State University Library. At this time the entire collection is being republished into 20 volumes, and the new publication will be complete including all of the personal information.
I found an interesting story by Booth Tarkington in Oxford's Book of Historical Stories. The title is Lord Jerningham. It's a little hard to read because those Brits speak English so funny, but on the second reading you get used to the language and begin to understand that there is a love triangle and the country is being torn apart by rebels against the king. I wont give away the whole plot, and the author paints quite a portrait of Lord Jerningham.!"

Barbara
Fowler also sent this: "Don't ever throw away anything! In looking for something
else, I ran across the copy I made directly from the Huxley Books, Pioneers of the
Wiregrass. I think this must be from VOL 8 but I am not sure. Copied exactly:"
Pg 592 Pioneers of the Wiregrass by Huxley:
Jernigan, Moses (p228): An error was made in listing Aaron Jernigan as son; he was a son
of James Jernigan, Jr., and married his 1st cousin, Mary Jernigan, a daughter of Moses
Jernigan, the subject. Moses and wife Charity appeared to have had four daughters and no
son.

Carol Veal writes, "After several years of searching, I still have not found the parents or siblings of Elizabeth Jernigan, born 1817 NC, died between 1862-70 Dale Co., AL. She married Daniel Stone Hood circa 1834; their first child, my ancestor, Mary Jane Hood, was born in 1835 in NC. and married Thomas James Barnes. Daniel S. Hood was born 21 Jan.1812 in Goldsboro, NC. I sent a query a few years ago to the homepage, but haven't had the response I need or the proof of parentage. At this point, I don't know where else to search for her family. Thank you for any information, ideas or suggestions. If ANYONE can help her please contact Carol.

Elizabeth JERNIGAN and John Mabry DONNEL
Elizabeth JERNIGAN and John Mabry DONNEL were
married sometime around 1819, this is known for sure. We also know that Elizabeth and John
lived in Rutherford County, TN until about 1828. The will extract of Jesse JERNIGAN 1816,
Stewart Co, TN lists an Elizabeth and a Sally as daughters. I am trying to determine if
this is the same Elizabeth JERNIGAN. Sarah JERNIGAN was married to Raford CARROLL and a
1930's document mentions Sarah traveling to IL in 1829 with Betsy DONNEL. Have any
of you JERNIGAN researchers come across any additional evidence that would help me link
John DONNEL to this JERNIGAN family? Is this Sarah actually Sally JERNIGAN, daughter
of Jesse and his wife, Tamar?
Here is additional information.
1. Jesse JERNIGAN m. (1) Naomi BELL, m. (2)1 Thamar IVES, also known as:
Tamar. Jesse died abt 1816, Stewart Co, TN. An extrct of the will of Jesse JERNIGAN lists
wife Tamar (IVES) JERNIGAN, and children Ezekiel, William, Elisha, Daniel, Robert,
Charlotte, David, Gabriel, Nancy, Elizabeth, Lewis, Susan Margaret, and Sally.
Two of the sons of Jesse JERNIGAN later moved
to IL (Christian/Bond Counties), Lewis and Gabriel.
Note: That Jesse JERNIGAN is the same who
married Thamar (Tamar) IVES is not confirmed. Jesse Jernigan did drop out of sight after
Naomi's death, and the Stewart Co. will names children that match the documented children
of Naomi and Jesse.
Children by Naomi BELL:
i. Ezekiel JERNIGAN.
ii. William JERNIGAN.
iii. Elisha JERNIGAN.
iv. Daniel JERNIGAN.
v. Robert JERNIGAN. Children by Thamar IVES:
vi. Charlotte JERNIGAN.
vii. David JERNIGAN.
On the disappearance of JERNIGANs from Steward Co, TN: Lots of settlers went to Calloway
and other Jackson Purchase counties about that time. A Washington Donnell purchases land
in Calloway Feb 20, 1837. A David JURNEGAN is in Hickman, 1830 (could it be s/o Jesse?).
Tax List 1829 Hickman County Kentucky:
Jernigan David 1 male over 21---1 horse or mare---80 acres--watercourse, Bayou de Chien.
Looks like he was also in 1825-26-27and 28 no land until 29. Names varied in spelling.
viii. Gabriel JERNIGAN b. 1802.2 Moved to Bear Creek, Taylorville,
Christian Co., Ill. in 1835.
ix. Nancy JERNIGAN.
x. (2) Elizabeth JERNIGAN b. Cir 1806.
xi. Lewis JERNIGAN b. 1808, TN.2 Moved to Bear Creek, Taylorville,
Christian Co., Ill. in 1835.
xii. Susan Margaret JERNIGAN.
xiii. (3) Sally JERNIGAN b. abt 1811.
Second Generation
2. Elizabeth JERNIGAN b. Cir
1806, TN,3 m. abt 1819, John Mabry DONNEL, b. abt 1801, TN,4 occupation: Baptist
Minister,5 d. aft 1852, Williamson Co, IL.6 Elizabeth died Cir 1845, Vandalia, Fayette Co,
IL.7
Elizabeth JERNIGAN's Surname spellings:
JARNAGAN, JERRIGAN, JURNEGAN.
Marriage to John Mabry DONNEL abt 1819 is not
documented.
That Elizabeth is the daughter of Jesse JERNIGAN is also an assumption. Sarah JERNIGAN is
said to have traveled to IL in an ox cart with Betsy (JERNIGAN) DONNEL in 1829. This Sarah
may be the Sally mentioned in the 1816 will of Jesse JERNIGAN, Stewart Co, TN. The will
also mentions daughter Elizabeth (Betsy).
John M Donnel: Lived in Rutherford Co, TN after
marriage to Elizabeth. In 1827 (or 1829) He moved to Montgomery Co, IL. Lived in Vandalia,
IL. (Port & Bio Records of Mont and Bond Counties IL)
It is possible that his mother or grandmother
had the surname Mabry and that that is the origin of John's middle name.
He is found with Delilah in the 1860 Williamson
Co census. (Delilah WILLIAMS).
3. Sally JERNIGAN b. abt 1811,13 m. 15 May 1829, in TN,7 Raford CARROLL,
b. 3 Nov 1808, NC,7 buried: Evans Cemetery, Fayette Co., IL.7 Sally died 17 Nov 1892,
Fayette Co, IL,7 buried: Evans Cemetery, Fayette Co., IL.7 Could she have been Sarah
(JERNIGAN) CARROLL neice of Betty (JERNIGAN) DONNEL and John Mabry DONNEL?
Raford Carroll was born in North
Carolina 3 Nov., 1808 and came to Tennessee in 1828, and was there married to Sarah
Jernigan. They came to Illinois, accompanied by her sister, Aunt Betsy Donnell, in
an<BR>
oxcart, settling near Vandalia, and he entered the first 80 acres of land that was entered
in Seminary Township. [Lynn Whiteside]

MAXEDON writes that her husband is a descendant of Pearly Mae JERNIGAN STANLEY.
"She is his great-grandmother. I have just begun to do research and have only come up
with the name of Pearly's father, Richard C. JERNIGAN, and the first name of her mother,
Susanna M. Pearly was born about 1888 and I believe she was born in Tenn. She died giving
birth or shortly after the birth of my husband's grandmother, Audrey Marlene STANLEY.
Audrey Marlene STANLEY was born 19 May, 1920, in Alamo, Tenn. Pearly Mae JERNIGAN marrried
William Jefferson STANLEY. I have not found many dates as of yet, but I'm just
getting started. If there is anyone who might have information on Pearly's father and
mother, or any other ancestors, I would love to hear from them. Thanks in advance for your
help.

Editor's Note
Hmmm...
It is 12:32am as I write this so the homepage is obviously not going to make it online on the 1st of May as it should. So I guess I'd better change the date to the 2nd this month! As usual, April was a hectic month. And it is late, so this editor's note will not be as long as most of mine are! (That could be a good thing or a bad thing!)
Birthdays in May are almost overwhelming in my family. Apparently we think that May is the month to have babies! First of all is my sister Sharon, followed by my cousin D'mitri, my father-in-law, my niece Jenna and our twin daughters Krystal and Kim who will be turning 15 and seem to be determined to take their driving tests ASAP! If I left anyone out, I plead exhaustion! Happy Birthday to all you May babies!
April is always the month that we go to Plymouth, NC and this year was no exception. We had a great time. And I remembered the Jernigans who fought in the battle of Plymouth, NC in both of the memorial services that were held over the weekend.
If you haven't checked the Somerleyton Website out lately, GO! I just updated it with an additional picture sent to me by Edna Jernigan. It is a color print of what the manor house looked like when the Jernigans lived there.
We still are not sure what is going on with our move. So we are in limbo until we find out. We are pretty sure that we will end up in either PA or stay here in Summerville, SC. But we can't rule out other places. Kay Stone has suggested that we might like to move to Florida and others around the country have hinted that we move near them. It is nice to be wanted!
I'll be sure to let you know what we decide when I find out! Until then... Happy Hunting!
Your editor,
Marla Boots
