Jernigan Coat of Arms

Information Exchange

For those of you who have been asking about the coat of arms, here is a brief description of it:

"On a field Argent, three buckles lozengy gules; Out of a ducal cornet Or, a demi-falcon displayed."

"On a field Argent:" This means that the shield has a silver (argent...although heraldrically, it is often shown as white).

"three buckles lozengy gules:" On the silver/white background shield, there are three red buckles that are lozenge (diamond) shaped.

"Out of a ducal cornet Or, a demi-falcon displayed." The golden ducal cornet (small crown) is of high significance from a heraldic perspective. The ducal cornet signified that if the King fell in battle, it would be the secondary rallying point...hence, it signified an important person. The demi-falcon (or half-falcon) displayed means that the falcon has its wings spread fully.

Teresa Michaels shares the following information with us about her line of Jernigans:

"My grandfather was Burton Lee Jernigan, and his father was William Thomas Jernigan b. 12-23-1868. William married Mary Addival Caruthers, b. 6-14-1869, on 4-10-1887."

Teresa also supplied us with the following lists of William and Mary's children, and Burton Lee's children:

Children of William Thomas and Mary Addival Caruthers Jernigan:
Elizabeth Jernigan b. 1-31-1888; d. 4-25-1925
Burl Jernigan b. 7-2-1889
Hilda Ann Jernigan b. 5-21-1891; d. 4-30-1979
Burton Lee Jernigan b. 1-9-1894; d. 4-10-1970 in Barberton, OH
Alice Jernigan b. 8-14-1898; d. 11-2-1953
Bessie Jernigan b. 3-25-1902
Robert Earl Jernigan b. 5-24-1906; d. 12-19-1969
Flossie Jernigan b. 9-24-1911; d. 8-17-1958

Burton Lee Jernigan married Eliza Lavern Howard from Peavine, TN on 4-6-1919. Their children:
Haskell Jernigan b. 12-12-1919; d. 11-12-1925
Burtle Jernigan b. 11-25-1921
Eugene Arnold Jernigan b. 12-18-1923; d. 2-21-1991
Raymond Jernigan b. 2-22-1927; d. 5-8-1980
Casto Jernigan b. 3-12-1929
Edgar Ray Jernigan b. 2-27-1930
Alice Faye Jernigan b. 6-13-1939 (this is Teresa's mother)

By comparing Teresa's information with census and cemetery records, we have determined that William T. Jernigan is the son of Burrell Jernigan and his first wife Sarah E., and the grandson of Kedar Jernigan.

Census records show that William T., Mary, and their children lived in Putnam Co., TN in 1900. The census record gives William T.'s birthplace as Missouri.

Cemetery records from the Bloomington Springs, TN cemetery show a double stone with JERNIGAN inscribed at the top and the following names underneath:
W. Thomas, Dec. 23, 1868 - Feb. 28, 1950
Mary A. June 14, 1869 - June 26, 1918
Nearby are a set of 6 graves, all from the family of Burrell B. Jernigan, son of Kedar Jernigan.

Kay Stone supplied us with the following census record for Burrell Jernigan in 1870, Webster Co.,MO, p. 271, #61-61:
Jernigan, Burrell, 45, farmer, $330, b. NC
Sarah E., 24, keeps house, b. TN
Wm. T., 1, b. MO

As a note of interest, further on down the same page is this census record, #64-62:
Jernigan, Thomas B., 36, farmer, $257, NC
Elizabeth A., 34, TN
Martha E., 14, TN
Kader, 10, TN
Mary J., 9, TN
Issabel A., 7, TN
Thomas B., 2, TN

Comparing this with other census records, this is most likely another of Kader's sons, Bright Jernigan. His full name must have been Thomas Bright.

This article on Aaron & Mary Jernigan of Houston-Irwin Co., GA, is a joint effort by Barbara Fowler,
Shirley Durden (a descendant) & Sharon Tingley.

AARON & MARY JERNIGAN OF HOUSTON-IRWIN CO., GA

This is a follow-up to Barbara Fowler’s query about the various Aaron Jernigans, which appeared in Vol. 18, pg. 6 of the Home Page. Most of the following information comes from Shirley McMillan Durden, who is a great-great-great granddaughter of  Aaron and Mary Jernigan of Houston-Irwin Co., GA. Barbara’s original questions about this Aaron   were: who was his father, and where did he die? These questions still remain unanswered, but perhaps one of the descendants of this group will have some answers for us.

Aaron Jernigan was born about 1799. He married Mary Jernigan on Jan. 4, 1835 in Houston   Co., GA. Mary was also b. c1799, and they were supposedly first cousins. Mary was the daughter of Moses and Charity Jernigan, and the granddaughter of James and Jenette Jernigan of Bulloch Co., GA. We are not sure at this time which of James and Jenette’s sons would be the father of Aaron.

In the Houston Co., GA deed book E, there is a deed dated 6 Apr 1831 from Reziah Jernigan and Mary Jernigan to Benjamin Webb for a 202-1/2 ac. lot. It is signed by Clarkey Webb, Lemuel Webb, Resiah Jernigan (with an X), and Mary Jernigan (with an X). At this time we are unsure if this is the same Mary Jernigan or not, nor can we identify Resiah Jernigan.

Aaron and Mary Jernigan later lived in Irwin Co., GA and had the following children:

1. John Jernigan was b. c1835. He served in the Civil War, enlisting in Co. F, 49th Regiment of the GA Infantry from Irwin Co. on May 14, 1862. He was wounded at 2nd Manasses and died near Richmond, VA in the summer of 1862. He most likely was never married.

2. Joseph Jernigan was b. c1837. He also served in the Civil War, enlisting at the same time and place as his brother, John. Joseph died on July 14, 1862 in Camp Windor, Richmond, VA. It is believed he was also unmarried.

3. Elizabeth “Betsy” or “Bessie” Jernigan was b. c1840. She moved with her brother, Aaron, to Berrien Co., GA. On her tombstone in the St. Luke Cemetery in Alapaha, Berrien Co., it says, “Bessie Jernigan, Mother of John Jernigan and Elizabeth J. Luke”, with no dates. Both of her children are buried in the same cemetery. It is known that Betsy married William H. Luke on Dec. 4, 1881; they had no children. Bessie’s children were:

    a. John J. “Coot” Jernigan was b. 1856 in Ga. He d. July 23, 1930 in Berrien Co. John married Matilda “Tildy” Luke on Jan. 19, 1887 in Berrien Co. They had the following children: Francis Jernigan (never married); John N. L. “Lewis” Jernigan, who m. Sarah Williams; Ocie J. Jernigan, who m. Annie Bell Williams; Riley Jernigan (died as a baby), and J. W. Jernigan.

    b. Frances Elizabeth “Babe” Jernigan b. Nov. 16, 1862; d. Mar 8, 1901. She married Lemuel David Luke on Sept. 29, 1882 in Irwin Co. They had 12 children. Frances Elizabeth died a few days after giving birth to twins. One of the twins died also. The other twin, Frances Elizabeth Luke, was a son but was given that name after his mother died. He was always called Frank E. Luke, and that is what is on his tombstone. Frank E. Luke is Shirley Durden’s maternal grandfather.

4. Aaron Jernigan was b. c1841. He died c1888 and was buried in the pasture of his farm in Enigma, Berrien Co., GA. Like his brothers, John and Joseph, he also served in the Civil War, enlisting in Co. E, 61st Regiment Infantry, Irwin Co. Cowboys on Aug. 27, 1861. He was wounded and captured at Monocacy, MD, but he did survive the war and was at home on wounded furlough at the close of the war. Aaron married Zilpha Gray on Nov. 4, 1869 in Irwin Co. After Aaron’s death at age 47, Zilpha married a second time to L. D. Alexander. She died Oct. 4, 1933 in Enigma, Berrien Co., and was buried in the Jernigan Cemetery there. Aaron and Zilpha had two sons, Henry and Joshua Jernigan. They probably had more children, but at this time their names are unknown to us.

    a. Henry Jernigan, b. Dec. 1883 in GA; d. 26 Nov. 1918. He was married to Lucy Henderson on Oct. 26, 1902. Lucy died in 1915, three years prior to her husband’s death. Henry and Lucy had the following children: Joseph Jernigan, Ida J. Jernigan, Euna Jernigan, Elzie Jernigan, June Jernigan, Millie/Nellie Jernigan, Allie Jernigan. After Henry’s death, the children were brought up by their paternal grandmother, Zilpha Gray Jernigan Alexander.

    b. Joshua Jernigan, m. Roxie Solomon and had at least one child, Claude Jernigan, b. Nov. 3, 1894 in Berrien Co. Claude m. Miriam McMillan. He died Aug. 15, 1973 and is buried in the Brusy Creek Church Cemetery, Irwin Co., GA.

5. Mary Jernigan b. c1842. No further information.

6. Clarkey Jernigan b. c1844. No further information.

7. Sibbia "Sibbie" Jernigan b. c1848. No further information.

There are many descendants of these Jernigans still living in this area today. The following are some marriage records in Irwin and Berrien Counties which probably tie into these families, but we are not sure how at this time:

Irwin Co., GA marriage book:
Jernigan, Emma to Owens, T. A. 5-29-1907
Jernigan, Mary to Rowell, Olive 3-13-1918

Jernigan, Jim to Tomberlin, Mary 4-2-1910
Jernigan, Jim to Powell, Lula 2-24-1912
Jernigan, Mark to Jenkins, Dollie 11-27-1924
Jernigan, Wright to Holland, Bertie 8-12-1915
Jernigan, Willie to Stephen, Ozie 12-13-1913

Berrien Co., GA marriage book:
Jernigan, J. C. to Lipsey, L. L. 1-22-1883
Jernigan, J. C. to Fletcher, Lizzie 10-31-1912
Jernigan, Moody to Music, Wiley 6-17-1912

In 1878, a Rachel Jernigan was b. in Berrien Co., GA; it is unknown who her parents were. Rachel married Henry Gray and died in 1898 while in childbirth. Also, there was a Rebecca Jernigan b. 1825 in Irwin Co., GA; who married Daniel Newton Drawdy. They lived in Berrien Co. in the 1850s. We believe that both Rachel and Rebecca tie into this group of Jernigans; does anyone know how?

If anyone has any further information about this branch of the Jernigan tree, or knows about any of the names listed above, please contact either Shirley McMillan; Barbara Fowler; or Sharon Tingley. We would love to hear from you!

William Morgan sends the following:

Linda Stewart from the Fort Gatlin Historical Association tells me that Orange County officials have dropped plans to build condominiums on the site of a former U.S. Navy Sonar Lab in Orlando. Instead, they are now proposing to renovate the existing buildings for use as office space for the public school system. The 4-acre tract of land was where Aaron Jernigan built a stockade to protect area pioneers during the Seminole Wars, and Stewart's group had hoped the county would choose to build an historical park on the site. But, she said that she was optimistic that the group could work well with education officials to ensure that the site's historical significance would be highlighted by the renovations.

Gary Jarnigan sends this in answer to an inquiry last month:
My mother, Julia Jarnigan, read your inquiry about Peter Jarnigin in the March, 1999 Jernigan Homepage. She said that she was in correspondence with a Jo Gretchen Jarnigan Cox from Tyler, Texas. She gave my mother the following information in May 1960. Peter moved from Tennessee to Texas around 1875. His first marriage was to Amanda Johnson and they had two children, Edgar and a girl who died young.  The second marriage was to Lelia Belle Leftwich in 1886 in Hill County, Texas. They had nine children. Mrs. Cox was the seventh child of this marriage. Nathan S. Jarnigan was the nineth child and was born in 1903. He lived in Oklahoma City in 1995.

Diane Shackleford Small is researching Warren Phillip Jernigan who married Josephine Shackleford Colyar in Chattanooga, TN. They were married Saturday, April 27, 1918. Josephine Shackleford Jernigan lived in a mansion called Colyarton on Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, which belonged to her parents, Louis St. Clair Colyar and Daisy Shackleford Colyar. Diane believes that the Colyars had some kind of mining/ore business after the Civil War.Diane would like to hear from anyone related to these people. She also has photographs of the mansion, etc., and will be happy to share with other descendants.

Sharleen Combs-Valentine submits the following information about her husband's Jernigan ancestors:

Louise Jane Jerrigan/Jernigan was b. c1850; her father's name was Lewis. She had at least 3 other siblings named Emma Lewis, Elizabeth Nesbitt, and Napoleon Bonaparte. Louise Jane married a Mr. Valentine/Volentine. They had a son named William Lewis Valentine b. abt 1869, probably in Bond Co., IL, and d. 1940 in New Douglas, IL. They also had a daughter named Sally S. Valentine, who died as an 8-10 year old. Sally was b. and d. in Bond Co.

Wm. Lewis Valentine married Lettie/Lottie Irene Easton on June 20, 1894 in New Douglas, IL. She was b. July 19, 1872 in New Douglas, and died Nov. 13, 1969 in New Douglas. Lettie's parents were Louis Arden Easton and his wife, Anna. Louis was b. in NY, was a river boat captain on the Mississippi, and once had a fleet of ships on the Great Lakes. Easton, PA is named after the Easton family. Lettie and Wm. Lewis had one son: Louis Arden Valentine b. March 30, 1895 in Bond Co., IL and d. in the Amarillo, TX veteran's hospital. Louis Arden Valentine is Sharleen's husband's grandfather.

We are wondering if Lewis H. Jernigan, the son of Jesse Jernigan and Thamar Ives of Stewart Co., TN, could be the father of Louise Jane Jernigan Valentine. Lewis H. moved from TN to Christian Co., IL, where he appears in the 1850 census. In that census record, Lewis H. is age 42 b. TN; his wife Sarah is 35 b. TN; and they have two children: Louisa J., age 8, b. IL, and James C., age 1, b. IL. This would be a few years off from Sharleen's estimation of 1850 for Louise Jane's birth date.

If anyone has further information on these Jernigans and Valentines, please contact Sharleen.

Lois M. Franklin Tennyson is seeking the following information:

In her book on the Tennyson family, which is related to the Jernigan family, Faye Davidson mentions a book by the son of Marshall Henry Jernigan, Arlington Lee Jernigan. I have found references to this book in my father's research on the Tennyson family. My father's and Faye Davidson's notes say it was published about 1960 when Arlington Lee Jernigan was 90 years old. It may be a limited printing and private.  Problem, I cannot find it anywhere. Can anyone help find out if anyone has a copy?

Also, Marshall Henry Jernigan married Sinihia Or Sinithia Tennyson July 12 1862. Mattie Lucille Jernigan, daughter of James Franklin Jernigan, married Sinithia Tennysons g nephew, Hiram Franklin Tennyson.

First: does anyone know of other Tennyson/Jernigan marriages?

Second: Where did Henry and Sinithia Elizabeth Tennyson marry, how and where did they meet?

Third: How far back do the Jernigan/Tennyson connections go? Have heard they were also connected in England?

I am interested because I am the grandson of Hiram and Mattie Tennyson. My grandfather told me one of Mattie Jernigan's direct female ancestors had also been a Tennyson. The only Jernigan man I find marrying a Tennyson wife is Marshall Henry Jernigan. In the geneaology of James Franklin Jernigan I do not find any Jernigan/Tennyson connections.

Editor's Note

I don't EVEN know where March went!   Everything is in a total uproar at here, which means that everything is going normal in the Boots household!  It is already April!  My oh my!

I suppose that I will start with my 37th birthday.  Yes even I get older, although I am told that I don't look my age.   (Hey, quit laughing, it is true!  REALLY!)

It just so happens that my birthday fell on the same night as my oldest daughter's Jr./Sr. prom.  (And yes, I chaperoned!)  So for the most part you can say that I had one giant party!  OK, so only a few of the guests (3 out of 1000) actually knew it was my birthday.  I still had a good time.   The band was playing all the songs that I listened to when I was in High School.   Who says you can't go back!

My daughter, Cyndi had a friend of mine replicate Cinderella's gown from the ball in the Disney movie and wore that to the prom.   She even found a pair of glass (acrylic) slippers!  Her boyfriend, Chris, rented a tux that he deemed worthy of Prince Charming.  They made a really good looking pair, if I may say so!  The only question I have is, what part did I play, Fairy Godmother or Wicked Stepmother?  (Never mind, I don't want to know.)

Krystal's softball team has played two games and has won both of them.  This year is a little different as it is fast pitch softball vs. the slow pitch ball they played in years past.  But Krystal seems to be taking to the increased pace of the game quite well.

Cyndi and Krystal are in the school chorus and they took part in presenting a Madrigal Dinner at the school.  It was quite enchanting to step back into the time of "Ye Olde England" to be entertained by the kids dressed up in period outfits, singing, playing musical instruments, putting on a Punch and Judy show and finally serving a medieval dinner.  I think the most entertaining part was watching my parents and in-laws eating their dinner without silverware!  It was a wonderful evening and the kids did an excellent job of pulling it all off!

Kim is emerging from behind her glasses to face the world in contacts!  She managed somehow to break her glasses in half, which of course necessitated a trip to the eye doctor.  While there she was eyeing the contact lenses and so we decided to give it a try.  She seems to be doing well with them so far.  Although it is going to take some getting used to,  seeing her without her glasses!

For those of you who are able to go, don't miss the Dunn reunion!  I'm hoping to be able to get there, but if not, I'll miss y'all!

Easter is almost here and even though you may have outgrown egg hunting, I hope that you find what you are searching for this season!   Remember the great sacrifice that our Lord made for us! Have a blessed and joyful Easter.  Seek and you shall find...

Until then... Happy Hunting!

Your editor,
Marla Boots
