Information Exchange

Here you can post new info that you have located that you think will help other researchers. This can include census records, marriage records, death records, cemetery listings, great research libraries, useful places to visit online, etc.  If you wish to have your family line or Ged file put on the home page, please pay attention to the following warning: There is a problem with people taking ged files found on the internet and publishing the information as their own research in publications and books.  If you choose to place your ged files on this home page, I cannot guarantee that it will not be published elsewhere without your permission.  As long as you understand this, I will put your ged file on here.  If you are concerned about this, but would like to share your info, I would encourage you to email or snail mail your ged files to the person or persons you want to have it.

Anyone with interest in these family members or information on them, please contact Marla Boots.

The Old Jernigan Cemetery, near Carnegie, Georgia

“The Old Jernigan Cemetery” near Carnegie, Georgia was researched by Sue Grubbs, Coleman, Georgia. She writes that, in early days, there was a Pleasant Hill (Free Will) Baptist Church near the cemetery. This church was torn down. There is now a Church of God built on the site of the old church. The minister of this church and her husband keep the grounds of the church cut with a riding mower but they cannot get the mower into the Jernigan section. Willie Jernigan, who lived in Shellman, kept the cemetery cleared during his life. The cemetry is now grown up in weeds. There are nine (9) graves in the Jernigan section. 1888 is the first death record.

1. One grave is black and no engraving can be seen on the headstone.
2. James Roy [Ray?] son of J. F. and C. P. Jernigan
3. Elizabeth K. Jernigan [Elizabeth Killingsworth??] Aug 12, 1829 - June 29, 1895
4. Stephen A. J. Son of J. J. And Jemima E. Jernigan Sept. 20, 1866 - June 29, 1888
5. J. J. Jernigan (Masonic Emblem on Stone) Nov. 14, 1825 - Mar. 10, 1902, Mason
6. A. B. Jernigan [Aubry B.was father of Willie Jernigan who kept cemetery?] Oct. 17, 1861 - Oct. 31, 1893
7. Willie Eugenia wife of A. B. Jernigan Feb. 7, 1862 - Sept 25, 1890
8. B. W. Jernigan [Blake W. Jernigan] Sept. 15, 1833 - Mar. 7, 1915 [82 years of age]  A marker between this grave and the next 9 graves reads: “Co. F. 32nd. Ga. Inf. CSA”
9. Mrs. L. A. Jernigan [Lavinia A. Jernigan ??] Sept 9, 1834 - Mar. 5, 1913 [79 years of age]

The death dates on these gravestones were as follows:

1901 James Roy Son of J. F. And C. P. Jernigan
1905 Eunice Dau. of Mr. and Mrs. G. P. Jernigan [This grave was not listed on Sue Grubbs communication.]

Bob Jernigan writes that his hard drive crashed!  (My sympathies and I'm sure the sympathies of all the Jernigan researchers are with you!)  He needs to hear from some of you again.  Read the following to learn why.

I am listed as a researcher on your page for my Jernigans from Anson County, N.C - Robertson County. I am also looking a connecting families such as Permenter. Over the last several months I have had a lot of E-mail that I just have not had the time to answer, but they were off in a separate folder waiting. Well, several weeks ago much of my hard drive was lost, including all of my internet stuff. I was not able to retrieve any of my messages, receiving or sending. Would you explain that in a short paragraph in the next issue and ask those who have submitted inquiries to please contact me again. Hopefully, time will permit a more prompt response.

Barbara Fowler sends us the following article from the Atlanta paper.  Congratulations to the happy couple!

Couple's essay wins $20,000 wedding

Associated press Buckhannon, W.VA- Joy Cunningham had 100 words to make her point, but the last 19 probably clinched it.

"We may not have fallen in love in West Virginia, but we are both in love with West Virginia," the Durham, NC, woman wrote.

With those words, she and fiance Lyndon "Dave" Jernigan won an international essay contest designed to promote West Virginia tourism by giving away a wedding with $20,000 in prizes.

The pair, who proclaimed West Virginia "the most romantic spot on Earth," were picked from more than 200 couples who entered the contest.

Cunningham's roots are in West Virginia, where her parents and grandparents fell in love while attending West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Cunningham is project coordinator at a rape crisis center in Durham; Jernigan is a buyer for a chain of health food stores.

Their donated prizes range from blood tests, bridal wear and a $2,500 photo package to an acre of land for a new home and a Florida honeymoon.

Chamber President Justin Griffith said the winners were "almost speechless" when he called them on the eve of the public announcement. "They're probably one of the most sincere couple we had," he said.

As this is the recollection of Marla Boots' feeble mind, please forgive me if I leave anything out.  If anyone else would like to make additions, please feel free to send it to me and I'll put it in next months!

The reunion in Nacodoches, TX was so much fun!  I arrived at around 5:30 in the evening with my sister-in-law, Beth and my nephew, Benjamin.  Our trip from Waco took us much longer than we expected. So Beth & Ben decided to hang out with us & return home the next day.

Reba was one of the first Jernigans I met.  I was surprised because she was younger than I had imagined. (It's funny how people seem older on the internet!)  Don Jernigan, co-editor of the Jernigan Connection, and his wife Jane were there too!  They made the weekend fun!  Poor Kay Stone was sitting on an airplane in Atlanta for 5 hours.  That left good samaritans, Barbara Fowler and Sharon Tingley people-watching at the airport for quite some time until she arrived.  But boy was she happy to see them!  (By the way, don't mention peanuts or pretzels to Kay for awhile.  She seems to have developed an aversion to them.)  Well, I was happy to see the three of them when they finally arrived late that evening!  It was the first time that all of us had been together at once.  And the first time I actually met Sharon face-to-face!  As if they hadn't been through enough already, the poor tired trio was starving due to a lack of food!  Reba's husband was sent out on a search and rescue mission to find something for them to eat as there was nothing on the premises.  (I never knew that Walmart made fried chicken!  But it must have been good!)

Over the weekend, I met a number of others that I've emailed back and forth to but haven't met.  Ron Jernigan showed up with Kathy in tow.  For a short time we were under the impression that she was his wife since she was hanging out with the spouses while us Jernigans were deep into a Jernigan discussion, but then we discovered that she was his sister! We quickly upgraded her from tag-along spouse to real Jernigan status ;-) (We do love you Jane!) and dragged her into the genealogy discussions! Kathy had us laughing most of the weekend!

Kathy Mosely, Betty Jacks and their sister, Judy also popped in for a short visit with us!  Unfortunately, they were expecting company at their house, so they couldn't stay long, but we had a great time during their visit!

I guess things got pretty rowdy at the reunion because the sheriff showed up too!  Just kidding, he was a Jernigan as well. Sheriff D'Wayne Jernigan is a close cousin of Sharon Tingley and they shared many stories back and forth.  I must say that after he shared some escapades of his career as a customs officer, I was quite impressed with him!

Barbara Stancliff was another Jernigan researcher who came to the reunion. She is another close cousin of Sharon Tingley and it was wonderful to see the two of them chatting face to face!

On Saturday, a small group of us went into Nacodoches and explored the shops, checked out the old buildings and saw the bricks laid in the square by (shoot! I can't remember the Jernigan that did this!  Shame on me!) a Jernigan. We even managed to find a cemetery to visit, but apparently we were in the wrong one!  Didn't find any Jernigans. We enjoyed a great lunch at a local restaurant and I'm surprised anyone got any food in a we were all laughing so much!  We took the opportunity to try to introduce Sharon Tingley to some good ol' Southern cookin', but she seems to have an aversion to fried things and gravy!  No wonder she is such a slim Jernigan!  I don't think she'll be using fatback when she moves to Macon!

Barbara Fowler's birthday was on Sunday, but we celebrated it all weekend.  We gave her an "party" on Sunday morning where she received gifts of benne wafers (a southern cookie) and an autographed copy of Marion Hargrove's book, See Here, Private Hargrove. Saturday, we celebrated at lunch with a birthday bowl of banana pudding.  (That was a first!) Barbara says that it was the best birthday she ever had.

I hated to see Sunday come because I knew that I would have to say goodbye to everyone.  But it was a wonderful weekend.  I did get to visit with Reba and a few others for a little while longer as I didn't have to leave until Monday. Lunch was wonderful as I listened to more Jernigan stories!

As you can see below under reunions, this group doesn't waste time in planning another party!  The next time will be in Troy, AL, smack dab in the middle of Jernigan country!  It should be a blast!

Questions

If you have reached a point in your research and can't get any further or if you have a question about something you have found, we'll post an inquiry for you here.  Please keep your info as brief as possible.

Jeanette Cuthriell sends the following inquiry:  Lofton Cotton and Edith Jernigan. F. Sylvester Cotton, b. 1833 m. Florida Ann Peaden 1852. She was the daughter of Bartlett Peaden and Anne Sprawls. If any researchers of Edith Jernigan, dau of Benjamin and Vashti Jernigan has more info on the Cotton's and Peaden's, I would love to hear from them.

*****

Jean Shroyer has the following question: Does anyone descend from the lineage of Elijah Jernigan, eldest son of Wm. Henry Jernigan who was born in Hardeman Co., TN. Elijah's mother was Sarah Elizabeth Ammons of Hardeman Co., TN. She died by 1890 in Texas and Wm. Henry Jernigan remarried in Sept. 1890 to Amanda Elizabeth Southerland. Need to find the names of Amanda E. Southerland's parents??? Elijah moved off to South Dakota possibly as a young man, married and had at least two daughters who are now deceased. If anyone desends from this line, please contact Jean.

*****

Ron Jernigan was at the reunion in TX.  Kay Stone helped him with some questions he had.  After doing further research, he came across this info.  If you have any info on these Jernigans, contact Ron.

Kay reviewed some census printouts with me on Alexander and I'm much more confident that I have Alexander all the way back to the 1830 Census.(Columbus Co., North Carolina) Thanks Kay! After reviewing this census closer, I realized that there are two other Jernigans on that same page - possibly brothers. I'm forwarding this information in the hopes that the other names might click with someone.

Alexander Jernigan, 1 male 20 - 29, 2 females <5, 1 female 20 - 29. 4 total.
Charles Jernigan, 1 male <5, 3 males 5 - 9, 1 male 30 - 39, 1 female 5 - 9, 1 female 20 -29. 7 total.
Stephen Jernigan, 3 males <5, 1 male 20 - 29, 1 female <5, 1 female 5 - 9, 1 female 20 -29. 7 total.

Also, Kay mentioned that she saw where Alexander had stopped off in Georgia for a while. The pension information that Sharon Tingley clued me into, identified another daughter and son-in-law that I hadn't seen before. The son-in-law, Arthur Burney was born in Georgia. They (Arthur and R) had a daughter in Florida before they moved to Texas with Alexander. The 1850 Census also showed a J. Durham from Georgia, innumerated with Alexander. So, there is some kind of Georgia connection.

Jean Shroyer forwards the following inquiry from Grant W. Johnston  If you can help, please contact Grant.

Help please. We may have a connection. The story about my grandfather's surname is confusing. He had an older brother named William Thomas JOHNSTON b. ca 1866, and the father of that brother was Wash JOHNSTON. We think his real name was George Washington Johnston. But according to family traditation Wash was not the father of my great-grandfather, Albert G. Johnston., b. 1868 We don't know who the father was and at this late date may never know.

Both boys' mother was Effie BLACKWELL, b. ca 1840, from Jasper Co., MS. She is believed to be the daughter of Swinton BLACKWELL. We don't know if Effie and Wash were married or exactly what happened to him. A man named G. W. (maybe George W.) JOHNSTON was parolled at Vicksburg after the war. Also parolled at that time was a R. D. JOURNIGAN.

They were both in the Fifth Regiment, Co. B, State Troops. The State Troops were like a county militia from Jasper Co. but they were under the command of officers of the CSA Army. 73 men enlisted at Paulding on July 26, 1862. 30 men from that group were parolled after the surrender at Vicksburg.

Effie is listed in some books and I believe in some census as Effie JOURNIGAN but the children born after 1868 spell their name JOHNICAN. The rural southern accent adds an "r" sound to some words, like "Warshington" so the name may have been JERNIGAN, JOURNEGAN, or JOHNICAN.

There is an E. JOURNIGAN in the 1866 Jasper Co. census with one male under 10 and one female under 10. However, there are reasons to question if this is the right Effie Journegan. She was aged 30-40 in the census but Effie was only 26. We don't know about a girl in that family and if Effy was a JOURNEGAN by 1866 why did a child born in 1868 go through life with the JOHNSTON last name and the stigma of illegitimacy?

Below is some MS land patents listing Johnston's. Below that is a list for Jasper Co. Both George W. and William T. are on that list. If anybody knows anything about these people please let me know.

Here is an inquiry from someone who is a writer/researcher working on a story about Abigail Jernegan. If you have any information on this branch of the family or have some leads that support Abigail's story, please send that information to APALA@prodigy.net

Abigail was of the New England clan, married Whaling Captain Nathaniel. M. Jernegan and went to sea with him and their 9-year old son, Holmes. According to sources I have found she was the first white woman to enter Japan after Commodore Perry "opened" the ports in 1854.

Their son Holmes later became a physician in Boston. Their ship was the Eliza F. Mason.

Sharon Tingley is moving!  She is heading from Lake Elsinore, CA to Macon, GA.  She will be "unplugged" as of Aug. 8th and we will be leaving CA the 9th. She doesn't know yet when she will be back up and running but it will probably be two weeks or so anyway.  So keep that in mind!  She will probably be too busy for the next month or so to get right back to you!  Be patient!  But when she gets to GA, don't be surprised if she responds to you as "Hey Y'all!".

Tim Pierce sends this update on the Jernigan Roots Web.

Harold Helm is no longer a RootsWeb member, and doesn't manage this list any more. We're looking for volunteers to replace him; please send me mail if you're interested. You do not need to be a RootsWeb Sponsor.

Harold may want to set up replacement lists at another site. If and when that happens, we'll let you know where the new lists are and how to subscribe. That way, anyone who prefers his way of doing things can unsubscribe from this list and join him in his new enterprise. It's up to you.

Sorry about the inconvenience! We'll try to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Regards,

Tim Pierce
RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative system obfuscator and hack-of-all-trades

In addition to Tim's message is this one from Andrew Bilinghurst.  If anyone would like to take over the handling of this list, please contact Andrew.

Gday gang,

My name is Andrew Bilinghurst. I'm kind of an assistant "obfuscator" to Tim and some of the other rootsweb management-types. Tim sent this list a message telling you Harold Helm isn't managing this (or any) RootsWeb lists now and that we're looking for replacement list owners.

About half of Harold's 77 lists were taken the first day, and 3 or 4 of us stepped in to help Tim with the others which still need list managers so that Tim can go back to improving Rootsweb as a whole.

I already manage GENANZ-L and a number of the IIGS lists and am willing to keep this list if nobody else wants it, but since I don't have any Jernigan names at all in my ancestry, and since I've not been subscribed to this list until today, you might do better with someone who has a vested interest and some expertise to share.

If you think you'd like to try list managing, go to the web at http://www.rootsweb.com and browse around the listowners and webmasters section. If you are sure you want to manage the list, send me email at billinghurst@slim.agvic.gov.au (preferable) or send email to Tim Pierce at twp@rootsweb.com

If you want to give it a go, I am here to help you through and answer questions, plus we have some excellent resources available for listowners, including two specialised lists to help listowners including one for newbie listowners. In other words, there is a big helping hand being offered.

Rootsweb's procedure for lists has been to allow sponsors who donate $24 per year to have two lists. However, Helm's lists and the others which came over from indiana.edu with the "great Maiser migration" were grandfathered in, and no donation will be expected for managing any of those lists (though in my opinion donating to Rootsweb is a pretty good thing to do). It will not be a requirement for this list, however.

Editor's Note

Wow!  July is at an end and so is the second year of the Jernigan Homepage!  Next month we'll celebrate the beginning of the third year!  How exciting!

I hope that all of you had a wonderful 4th of July.  I did!  We spent that part of our vacation with my husband's family in PA.  Great food, fellowship and fireworks!  My three daughters, Cyndi, Krystal and Kim, even managed to appear in the local 4th of July parade.  They were riding with their cousin on his restored antique tractor.

After leaving the cool and wonderful temperatures of PA, I headed for TX via Augusta, GA.  Yes I know, it was a little out of the way.  But my brother needed me to drive a car from there to him in TX.  So I began the first leg of my journey with my in-laws who drove me to Columbia, SC.  From there, my dear cousin Deborah picked me up and took me to her house in Augusta, GA.  I spent the night with her and early the next morning, armed with the best directions I've ever been given anywhere, I found my way out of Augusta and hit I-20 for my journey across the south.  I almost made it to Woodway, TX (just outside of Waco), but having promised my relatives that I would not travel after dark, I stayed in Marshall, TX for the night.  I know that I passed through many cities with Jernigan researchers in them, and was tempted to stop and call you, but knew that if I did, I would never have gotten to TX!  But I did think of you as I drove through GA, AL, MS, LA and TX.  Even though I was only a couple of hours away from Mark's house that first day, it took me until 5:30pm to get there the next day as I caught the antiquing bug along the way.  I had the best time exploring a number of antique stores on the way to Woodway!  I saw a few things I had never seen before.  Apparently with the heat, the owners of the stores had taken pity on the animals, because I saw a whole menagerie of them in the stores I visited.  The dogs and cats didn't surprise me, even the rabbit didn't phase me.  But in one store, there was a goat running free!  That was definitely a first for me!  But if you are an antique lover, TX is a great place to shop!

Upon arriving at my brother's, I rested up and then the next day we went over to the Davidian Complex.  There is little or nothing left there now, but it was interesting to visit.  I understand the situation out there better now. One thing that I found odd was that as soon as we pulled into the driveway, we saw locusts flying all over the place. When we got out and walked the property, they would go flying in front of us in swarms.  But as soon as we left the property, I never saw another one of them on my whole visit in TX.  Hmmm....

After leaving my brother's, I headed off to the reunion of the Calvin and Susan Jernigan descendants in TX.  I had a wonderful time meeting up with cousins I've been corresponding with over the past couple of years!  You can read more about that in the info section of the homepage.

Upon returning home, I had not too much out of the ordinary around here - just a car that wouldn't start and a refrigerator/freezer that had defrosted while we were gone!  Those two projects kept me slightly busy for a few days!  But I'm happy to report that both car and refrigerator/freezer are well and doing fine for now!

Other happenings this month included the anniversary of my parents.  Happy Anniversary, Mom & Dad!  This year marks their 42nd year.  My dear Grandma Jernigan turned 82 this month! Happy Birthday!  And she is just as fun and sweet as always!  Love ya, Grandma!  She came to spend the night next door at my mama's. We took her shopping and sightseeing, played canasta and had a party for her that evening.

Next month will mark the third birthday of the Jernigan Homepage.  Look for some changes as I revamp and try to improve it!  We may even be in a new location, but don't worry, I'll make sure you can find it!  Thanks to all of you for your ideas, suggestions, material and support over the past two years.  I know I can count on more of the same in the future! Until then...

Happy Hunting!

Your editor,

Marla Boots
