Who were the Parents of James John Jernigan?
Contributed by Jim Jernigan and Barbara J. Fowler

The following family was found in Dale County, AL in 1850. According to James J. Jernigan, a descendant, James is James John Jernigan. James has been trying to determine the parents of this ancestor.

James b. NC 54 b. c1796
Nancy b. NC 38 1812
Nancy A b. GA 17 1833
Arretta b. GA 16 1834
Wm. 14 b. GA 1836
Elizabeth 12 B. GA 1838
Sarah Ann10 B. AL 1840
Jackson 8 b. AL 1842
James H. 6 AL 1845
Henry W. 2 AL 1848 James’s(son of Needham) grandfather was Henry W. Jernigan

Apparently the family was in GA between 1833-1838 for the birth of their older children. We have been unable to find a marriage record for Nancy Ward and James John Jernigan in Georgia. Because of the names given to his children and the fact that he was in Georgia, we have tried to link him to Needham Jernigan, SR’s line. Our thinking is that perhaps James John Jernigan was the son of Needham’s son James. We know that Needham’s son Henry Sanders Jernigan did live in Putnam Co. and there was James Jernigan there at the same time.

On August 4, 1792, a James Jernigan married Sarah Pierce in Putnam Co. James John Jernigan was born c1796 in what he always said was Greene Co. His family thought that he was born in Greene Co., NC but it is possible that it was Greene Co., GA. From "Marriages & Land Lottery List, Hancock County Georgia" by Martha Lou Houston: James Jernegan of Maj. Carley’s Battalion, Capt. Coffee’s District. Hancock Co., was entitled to two draws in 1806 lottery of Ocmulgee lands. (Note: Males entitled to two draws include every free white male resident of the state for at least 3 years, and over 21 years of age having a wife and legitimate child/children under 21 years of age.) This indicates that he was married and had one child by 1806. That child could have been James John Jernigan born c1796 who married Nancy Ward.

Look again at the names that James John Jernigan gave his children and compare those with the names in James Jernigan’s, (son of Needham Jernigan) family. James John named a daughter Nancy. James(son of Needham) had a sister named Nancy. James John named a daughter Elizabeth. James’ (son of Needham) mother was Elizabeth Sanders. James John named a son William. James (son of Needham) had a brother called William. James John had a daughter called Sarah and James, son of Needham, could be the one who married Sarah Pierce. James John named his last child Henry W. and James’(son of Needham) grandfather was Henry W. Jernigan..

Between 1813 and 1820 James and his family were in Putnam Co. In 1813, James was on the tax digest in Capt. Adams district. On the 1820 Putnam Co. GA census in Captain William Jernigans District we find James Jernighan: 1 m under 10 yr.; 2 m 10 and under 16; 1 m 45+. Females in household: 4 under 10 yr; 1 10 and under 16; 1 26 and under 45. He has 3 sons and 5 daughters by 1820. James John Jernigan would have been about 24 years old now would not be reflected on this census if he were married and had his own family.

In 1830 Putnam Co. GA census, James is gone but Sarah, apparently his widow, is still there:

Sarah Jernigan: 3 females under 5 years.; 2 females age 5 and under 10; 1 female age 30 and under 40. We have been unable to find a will for James Jernigan who must have died between 1820-1830.

James John Jernigan would like for anyone with information or possible leads to this family to contact him.

We have been trying to determine the other children of James and Sarah Pierce Jernigan. We have found several Jernigans in Putnam and surrounding counties that would be in the right age group to the above census records.

Emma Stevenson in Houston TX wrote "I can only prove to Sarah P. Jernigan b. 1825 GA, married Henry H. Huggins/Hudgins 18 April 1839 in Fayette Co. GA. She died after 5 March 1887 in Macon Co. Alabama. In 1830 there is a Sarah Jernigan in Putnam Co., GA with only females in the household .

This could be the widow of James Jernigan who sells property in Bibb Co. GA to William Yates 31 Jan. 1826. This deed is in Fayette Co. GA, Book A, pg. 147."

Only speculation, but Sarah P. could be one of the many daughters of James & Sarah. Maybe the "P." stood for Pierce. Sarah P. Jernigan could be one of the 3 females under 5 on the 1830 census in Putnam Co., GA..

Other possible children are:

Nancy Jernigan m. Lowden Doney 1818 Hancock Co., GA.
Elmira Jernigan m. John Dunn 1831 Hancock Co., GA
Marietta Jernigan m. William Mapp 1846 Greene, GA

Saleta Jernigan m. Bird Kennedy 1837 Monroe Co. (Remember that Needham Jernigan had a daughter also named Saleta but she married an Josiah Askew . Nancy m. David Hoskins 1797 ( from-Columbian Museum & Savannah Advertiser. no county given.) Emory Jernigan m. Ruth Norris 1819 Putnam Co., GA

We have not had any inquiries concerning any of the above except from a descendant of Elmira Jernigan and John Dunn. He did not have any information on Elmira. We would certainly like to get in touch with any descendants.

The Dunn Reunion

This weekend was so much fun! Even though I didn't go up there until Saturday morning, I had a wonderful time.

As soon as I got to Dunn, I stopped in at the Ramada to see if Don and Jane  Jernigan were there. They were. Don came down to the lobby to get me and when I saw him I asked him if he was Don Jernigan. He looked a little surprised but said yes and we hugged. Then he said, "You were supposed to be a blonde!" I laughed. He said that was how he had me pictured. I told him that was probably because I'm so ditzy! But he denied that, thank goodness. :-) Don and Jane immediately adopted me and decided to take me over to Mt. Olive where there was a luncheon for Marion Hargrove.

Kay Stone was at the reception when I went in. On the way in I met the Mayor (nice guy!) and a number of very friendly townspeople. They were so delighted that Marion and his family were here for the ceremony. Marion came in a little later than me. He is such a sweet man! I didn't get to talk to him much because so many people were wanting to see him. But I did get several pictures of him.

The luncheon was very nice. There was a buffet table with delicious food on it. At the luncheon, I met Frank Jernigan. He is the one who lives in Sumter. I told him it was funny that he only lives 45 minutes away, but that we had to travel all the way to NC to meet!

After the luncheon, Don took me to the dedication & reception. On the way we stopped at a house that Marion Hargrove had lived in when he was a boy. It was a neat old house. I took several pictures of it with my 35mm camera.

The library dedication was outside on the lawn of the library. It looked like rain, but it held off until well after the ceremony was over and then it merely sprinkled. Several people got up and spoke to the crowd of somewhere (and I'm guessing) between 50 & 100 people. There were newspaper reporters and tv cameramen all over the place. Marion was presented with some pickles (Mt Olive is Pickle Town USA) and a hat which he gave to his grandson, Benjamin. He also received a certificate framed with a key to the city and May 2nd was declared Marion Hargrove day. Marion got up and spoke for a short while. He introduced his family. Unfortunately, there was no microphone so all of the speakers were very difficult to hear. I don't know who all was there with Marion except by sight. I know that he did have at least one daughter and a grandson. The others' relationships, and there were a number of them, were lost in the wind.  There were several cousins there who may have lived in Mt. Olive.

It was at the dedication that I realized that the 3 on my camera hadn't moved while I had taken several pictures. It hit me that it wasn't a 3, it was an E. I had been taking pictures with an empty camera! That also meant that all of the pictures that I took of Marion's house (as well as the ones I took of Krystal and Kim before the 8th grade prom on Friday night) were non-existent! (Oh well, Krys and Kim weren't real happy about having their pictures taken anyway.) I loaded film in the camera and I took a number of pictures at the dedication.

After the ceremony there was a reception inside. Marion donated lots of items to the library. There were letters that were very interesting. I had taken Marion's book, See Here Private Hargrove and his treatise to be autographed, but he was swamped with people! I did take him a cup of punch, poor guy, he never got past the entrance of the library. At least they had a chair for him to sit in! I figured I could wait to get my books autographed until a little later because Kay said that we were going over to his hotel to visit with him after the reception.

At the reception, I met Bobby Jernigan (from Richmond) and Susie Jernigan (from Charlotte) Both of whom I've corresponded with, but never met.  I love putting faces to the people I talk to on email!

After the reception, we went to the lobby of Marion's hotel. Marion unfortunately was worn out, and went up to his room to rest. So I didn't get to see him there. But the rest of us had a good time swapping stories and helping each other. Don and Jane Jernigan, Susie Jernigan, Bobby Jernigan, Frank Jernigan and his wife, Kay, Gail ( a friend of Kay's) and me were all there. We stayed for quite a while and most of us decided to go to dinner together.

After dinner, we headed back to the hotel. I was beat since I only had 4 hours sleep the night before. But Kay and I did some genealogy work. We went through the records she had gotten in the NC archives. (One day I'm going to have to take several hundred dollars and go to FL and stay with Kay for a few days and live at Kinkos!)  I think we went to bed around 12:30am.

The next morning we were up early and had breakfast. The night before we had agreed to meet with Susie to go sight-seeing at the old Jernigan places. So at 10:00 we met up with her and headed off to find them. We went to the Martin Jernigan home. It was pretty run down. A migrant family had just moved in the day before with the understanding that they would fix the house up. They had already done a considerable amount of work in just one day! They let us take pictures and we went inside too. There had been birds living in the upstairs rooms and they had made quite a mess, but the guy had already gotten most of it cleaned up and the birds out of there. The original wainscoting was still on the walls, and  the house seemed much bigger inside than it looked outside. At some point it had been turned into a duplex. I don't know if it could be restored back or not. But the present tenant obviously takes pride in his work and knows what he is doing. He had already scraped a lot of the paint off the outside of the house and had the yard mowed. They certainly had worked hard on the house already. I think that next year when we go back that the house will look much nicer. I can't wait to see what he will do with it.

We also saw the Lewis Jernigan house from a distance. It has been remodeled and looks like a brand new house. Another place we stopped was the Jernigan Mill Pond. It is beautiful and so serene. The last place we stopped was a Jernigan cemetery. It is a little walled area beside a field. We checked out the stones and I took pictures. I don't know how well they will show up because some of the stones were difficult to read.

Then it was on to the reunion. The food was wonderful, the fellowship was fun! I met even more online cousins there. Susie was in seventh heaven. Pretty much everyone there was related to her. Unfortunately, she didn't find out too much though. She was a few years too late. The ones who could have helped her had passed away. She did find Bradley's siblings buried in the cemetery at the church and got several good leads on who she could talk to in the area. At least a couple of them knew about Bradley! She also found another cousin who is from her husband's line. He is Learry Warren. They are working together on their lines.

Marion showed up after we had started eating, (I was worried that he wasn't coming!) but if you've ever been to a Jernigan Reunion, you know that there is no shortage of food! After Marion finished eating, I got him to autograph my books. Once again he was swamped with people, so I never did get to spend much time with him. I did get someone to take a picture of us together just before he left and told him what an honor it was to meet him. He really has an impressive history as an author and screenwriter.  A introductory speech was given at the reunion before Marion got up to speak and his accomplishments included writing for several popular TV programs including Maverick (starring James Garner) and The Waltons.  He has written a number of books and has done extensive research on the Jernigan family.  So you can see why it was an honor to meet him!

Don & I got up at the business meeting of the reunion and talked about the internet sites.  Don talked about the Jernigan Connection going online and I told them about the newest addition of the Jernigan bookshelf and asked them to check it out and send me anything that they could add.

After several hours of good food, entertainment, meeting many new cousins and conversation, I headed home. It was definitely a weekend to remember. I had a wonderful time.  Hey, next year's reunion will be the first Sunday in May! We'd love to see you there!

Bud & Kay Cavender made an exciting discovery!  The account follows:

We were determined to find something on Lucy on our recent trip to Houston. We knew she was in Dewitt County in 1870 so we went there, spent time at the court house, etc, etc and got nowhere other than to see the type of country that Lucy landed at after making the barge trip to Texas. She probably landed at Indianola or Port Lavaca and made her way inland. Its only 30-40 miles so this is probable. Any how we were aware she spent time in Yorktown, Dewitt County but we found nothing of any value.

We went up the road to Gonzales County, next county up from Dewitt, reason was we had spotted Lucy living with her last son Henry in 1880 in Gonzales County. Went to the court house and things started to happen. A volunteer had made a 3x5 file of cemetery records, no book, just 3x5's, anyhow I went to the J's and there she was!

We would have never found her except for that person doing that volunteer work. The clerks were all laughing at me because I was beside myself when I found the card. The card said she was at the Masonic Cemetery in Smiley, Texas, also in Gonzales County. We drove over there and looked at the area she lived in, we found the creek she lived on and then found the cemetery and there she was.

We took pictures and will have them if anyone wants a copy. The monument said "Lucy Ann Jernigan, born in S.C. (not Georgia!) Feb 22, 1812, died in Tx. Jan 20, 1881. Now the best part was when we noticed that a new base had been placed under the original tombstone and it read, "She was my mother" and was signed W. W. Ellis, which of course was her son and my great grand father. W. W. was short for Wadkins W. Ellis. Remember that W.W.'s father was James Ellis who was killed and then Lucy married Cary Jernigan. So that is how we are connected to the Jernigans!

We travelled a lot of miles to find this lady and it was worth every mile we spent on the road.

Learry Warren (one of the new cousins I met in Dunn) is looking for info on Robert Fradian Jernigan, b. 7-3-1872. He was the son of Budd Icard Jernigan, b. 4-6-1823 d. 5-30-1902. Robert Fradian was his son by Budd Icard's 3rd wife, Lizzie Herring Jernigan, b. 1-27-1844 d. 5-31-1907. Budd Icard was the son of Lewis Jernigan.  Any and all help on Robert Fradian Jernigan would be greatly appreciated including names of wife, children, date of death, etc..  These folks were from Johnston and Sampson Counties, N.C.  Thank you so much.

Now Susie Jernigan sent Learry the following info:

I just found an old legal document which sheds some light on Robert F. Jernigan. It refers to a 1961 legal dispute over the will of Lizzie Jernigan who died on September 17, 1961. She bequeathed land in Harnett County to the her nieces and nephews - the children of her siblings.   Included in the group are the "children of my beloved late brother, R.F. Jernigan, the children of my beloved late sister, Sarah E. Barefoot, the children of my beloved late sister, Mary A. Hodges, the children of my beloved late sister, Vancie, to Bessie and Charlton - the children of the late B.B. Jernigan (that's Bradley, Susie's husband's ancestor), and to the nephew of my beloved late sister, Mrs. Claudia Jernigan Turnage.

R.F. Jernigan (Robert Fradian) is further described as having died leaving surviving three children:

Pearl Jernigan, unmarried, who resides in Dunn, North Carolina
Reva J. Williams, who resides in Dunn, NC, who is married to Adolphus Williams
Gladys Jernigan Maynard, who died about December, 1959 Gladys's children are described as:

E.T. Maynard, Jr. who resides in Tenafly, NJ and is married to N. Maynard
Marie Maynard Holmes, who resides in Rio de Janerio, Brazil, who is married to Oliver W. Holmes
Electa Maynard, unmarried, who resides at Fort Knox, KY
Helen Maynard Manning, who resides in Ivyland, PA RD who is married to William G. Manning

There is also information in the legal summons about the children of all the other siblings of Lizzie. According to the Jernigan Reunion book, Lizzie was the next to the youngest child of Budd Icard Jernigan and Lizzie Herring Jernigan. She was born sometime after 1877, so she probably lived into her 80's.

If anyone has further info on Robert Fradian Jernigan for Learry or Bradley B. Jernigan for Susie, please contact them!

Jean Shroyer sends the following info on prisoners who died in Andersonville.  The POW Museum is looking for info on those who died from 1864-65. These folks are interested in obtaining photos of those men who were prisoners at this camp during the Civil War as well as military records on the individual and memoirs so that they can add this info to their database. They recommend obtaining the military records from the National Archives. For more info, please write to:

Questions

If you have reached a point in your research and can't get any further or if you have a question about something you have found, we'll post an inquiry for you here.  Please keep your info as brief as possible.

John E. Davis is seeking info on a marriage of Mary Jernigan to ? Hagood, which probably occurred in the late 1700's in North Carolina. He has an old letter which indicates the maiden name of his ancestor was Jernigan, suggesting that she was partly French. However, I do not have the name of her husband, or where they were married. Family tradition indicates that they moved from North Carolina to South Carolina ca 1810 and the husband died circa 1820. Mary Hagood's sons were named Simpson M. and Milton A.   An obituary would place her birth around 1773. Would appreciate any information that would help to identify a "Jernigan-Hagood" marriage in North Carolina in the late 1700's.

Pat Cummings is very interested in learning more about her Jernigan ancestors. She knows positively her JERNIGAN line moved to Robertson Co., TN. from North Carolina.  If you have Jernigan ancestors from Robertson Co., TN that moved to NC, contact Pat.

Judith Oldham is looking for info on Jefferson C. Jernigan in the Civil War:  Just wondering if you know where I might look for my great great grandfather, Jefferson C Jernigan of Coffee and Rutherford County, Tennessee. He is not on the list. He was born in 1845, and died in 1909, so he was a prime age to serve. He lived right in the heart of confederate fighting territory. Do you know where else I could look? I would think that he would have fought right there in Tennessee as the family was a pretty tight clan in that area, as I understand it. Jefferson was born in Coffee County, son of Alexander C., the immigrant from NC, and died in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County. Jefferson was buried in Fairfield Cemetery, Bedford County, Tenn. So Jefferson should have served out of Bedford County!  It is his son, my great grandfather James L. who is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Murfreesboro, Rutherford County. Thank you for any information you might have or direction you might provide!

R. Jernigan is seeking Jernigans researching Benson, NC Jernigans or any researchers who are living in that area.

Editor's Note

This has been a full and exciting month.  It started with my sister's birthday and ended with a memorial day celebration! Sharon turned 31 this year.  And she celebrated in grand style...she left town!  Two days later was my dad-in-law's birthday.  I wasn't there to celebrate as I was in Dunn for the reunion, but my family said they had a great time.  May 11th brought my niece's birthday.  She is as cute as a button and is now 3 years old! The twins' birthday ended up the month. They turned 14 on the 22nd.  We had a family party with cake and ice cream.  It is always fun watching them open their gifts!

The Dunn reunion and the Marion Hargrove ceremony was wonderful!  I had hoped to go up on Thursday with Kay Stone, but forgot that the twins' eighth grade prom (well really just a nice dress-up dance) was on Friday night.  So I hung around to take pictures (with what I later realized was a camera with no film in it!!!). I left early on Saturday morning for NC.  Anyhow, a full account of my weekend is under the info section. I did take a number of digital pictures during the weekend, so if anyone would like me to email them to them, I will...as soon as I figure out which disk they are on!

Krys and Kim, my eighth graders, had an awards ceremony at their school.  Krystal received an award for Junior Scholar (this is for doing well on the PSAT) and Kim received 6 awards as well as a nomination for a scholarship award.  Her awards included, Junior Scholar award, Principal's "A" Team ("A" honor roll for the year), Outstanding GATE Student (Gifted and Talented Education), the Presidential Achievement award, Math Quest award (this is an academic competition amongst the schools in the tri-county area), Math Counts (a math competition) and the nomination was for the Fred L. Day award (must be recommended by a teacher for outstanding academics and community service.)

Krystal's softball team ended the season with the championship!  It was a very exciting playoff game.  We thought that we were going to have to play the best two out of three as the score was tied in the bottom of the fifth inning, but they pulled it off and won the game!  They will have closing ceremonies on Sunday, when she will get her trophy.

Krystal also received the Student of the Month Award.  The teachers get together and decide who was the best behaved and who had good grades for that month.  Krystal's teacher told her that they saved the best for last!

On the 30th of May (the real Memorial Day), Ed and I will be going to Florence in our civil war outfits.  Think of us as we will be standing in the 90 degree heat in all of our layers of clothes and poor Ed in his wool dress uniform!  Pray for a breeze! Ed will be unveiling a monument to the Union prisoners as well as the confederate soldiers who guarded them. Ed is a boardmember of the FRIENDS of the FLORENCE STOCKADE , who are trying to preserve the original stockade where the prison was. This monument is just a first step in their efforts to honor all of the men who were there.  I'm sure that it will be a moving ceremony and well worth the discomfiture that we will have for a short period of time. Considering that our ancestors put up with these hardships all the time, it is the least we can do to honor them.

I've been working on the counter.  It still isn't working, but I'm hoping to get it working soon.  It is on the site, but the numbers aren't moving.  At least that is as of the day I put the homepage on.  If they are working now, it is to the credit of Don Jernigan!  Without his help, there would be no counter!  Thanks Don!

I'm sorry that there were problems with the colorized coat of arms last month.  But thanks to the efforts of my husband, Ed, they are all fixed now.

I can hardly believe that school is almost over.  And the girls are exempting exams which makes the school year shorter! YIKES! I'm sure that our summer will be full of wonderful times.  I'm especially looking forward to that reunion in July.  We'll also be heading to Pennsylvania for a week.  Next month's issue will be coming out a little early as I will be out of town on the 30th of June.

Until then...

Happy Hunting!

Your editor,

Marla Boots
