The following is a reunion report from Brent Smith:
Descendants of Parvin and Arbie Jernigan joined for their 22nd annual Reunion
at Hilltop Christian Camp on Copper Ridge Road near Knoxville TN on August 5, 2000.
We send greetings to all the other Jernigan Reunions around the USA.
Attendance was somewhat lower this year due to several family illnesses and a couple of birthings (!) that kept many "regulars" (and their entourages)
away. This annual reunion-tradition was started by Rod and Marsha Boehm in 1978, with a gathering of decendants of Parvin and Arbie Jernigan at the
Boehm home in Nasheville TN. (Marsha is the daughter of Louise Jernigan Garner.) The first reunion was held a few years after Parvin's death, but
Arbie herself was able to atten the first four of these reunions. Attendance was about 30 to 35 at that time, and grew to a maximum of nearly 100 during
the late 1980's and into the 1990's.
The eight children of Parvin and Arbie are Richard, Tommy, Bobby, Sammy, Norman, Louise, Ruth and Mary Ellen. Six were present at the 2000 reunion,
missing only Ruth (deceased) and Sammy, who has health problems that temporarily limited his travel. Mary Ellen, Richard, and Ruth (prior to her
death) have attended all of the reunions, and most of the other children have missed only a couple each. Many of
their children, grand children and great
grand children also attended. A total of about forty-four folks turned out from seven states: AL, GA, KY, NC, TN, TX, VA.
These reunions are now organized for the first weekend in August each year by Tommy (865 947 6245) and Richard (865 457 3676).
The 22nd annual festivities began on Friday afternoon with the arrival of some of the out-of-towners. Mary Ellen, Louise, Richard and Norman cooked
hamburgers for the group Friday evening, and there was considerable socializing and reminiscing. Saturday the reunion began in earnest with
folks from seven states arriving during the morning. At mid-afternoon, a
fine meal of bar-b-que was ready, also featuring fresh squash casserole from Patsy
(Littrell, daughter of Ruth Jernigan Plumlee), fresh tomatoes from Richard, and two freshly-baked peach pies from Louise.
There was a display of genealogical information, considerable fellowship and many games underway during the day. Horseshoes was the joust of choice for
the guys, quilting and scrabble for the ladies. Modesty prevents me from disclosing the results of these games. After lunch there was a round-table
discussion, organized by Mary Ellen, in which each attendee was able to address the group.
We all hope to be there again next year.

Now some happy news! Barbara Fowler, or Wildbloom as many of you know her, is the proud grandma of not one, but two grandbabies! Both of her daughters delivered just a few days apart.
Kay Jarnagin has been researching
her Jarnagin roots in Ohio County, Kentucky. She writes, In the General Index to Marriages listed for Ohio County, KY on pages 119 and 120 of microfilm
#494954, I found the following marriages listed. Perhaps some of your readers would be interested. James
Jarnagin (son of John Jarnagin and Susannah Clark) and his wife Dolly Corum came to Ohio County in the 1840's. They were listed in the 1850 census with
six of their children, all born in Tennessee. In Glenn Clark's book, pg.46, it was stated that they "moved to Oklahoma soon after marriage." But in
fact, they moved to Ohio County, Kentucky. Most of those listed below are descended from James. However, I think a few other Jarnagins later moved in

John Jernigan sends the following info that he came across while researching:
"North Carolina Bastardy Bonds" by Camin, 1990 975.6 p2c Salt Lake
The "Bastardy Bonds" of NC are just as the title state...bonds posted because of the birth or impending birth of a bastard child. These bonds were intended to protect the county or parish from the expense of raising the child. It is asked that in reading this material, the reader do so with love and understanding of the problems of these men and women.
When the pregnancy of a woman or birth of a child was brought to the attention of the court, a warrant was issued and the woman brought into court. She was examined (questioned) under oath and asked to declare the name of the child's father. The reputed father was then served a warrant and required to post bond. If the woman refused to name the father, she, her father or some other interested party would post the bond. In some cases it was found that the mother and reputed father together posed the bond. If the woman refused to post bond or declare the father, she was often sent to jail.
Occasionally it will be found that a woman's name appears in the records several times. Refer to the Court Minutes to determine if this is for one or more cases of bastardy.
This collection was started several years ago when the author was a resident of Raleigh where the extant bonds are located. These records came from either the actual bonds or bond books. For a more complete listing of the Bastardy Bonds of a particular county, it is suggested you read the county court minutes. Those bonds that have survived are only a very small percentage of the number recorded in the County Court and County Superior Court.
The time period covered by this book is from the formation of a county to about 1878. It was felt that publishing anything more recent might be disturbing to some of our senior citizens. Only a handful of the NC counties are covered in this book.
If you wish to have a copy of the original bond it is suggested you go to
NC Archives or hire a researcher to locate the paper.

Wanda Watkins writes: I need help finding the parents/family of Elizabeth "Betsy" Jernigan who married William Ezekiel Watkins in ~1774 or 1775. They had a son Jesse Jernigan Watkins born in 1776 in TN or TX. Jesse was sent by Sam Houston to negotiate a treaty with Indians in northern Texas about 1837/38 and was captured and tortured to death. Jesse Jernigan Watkins' descendents always referred to Wm Ezekiel marrying "one of the 'red-eyed' Jernigans". Anyone ever heard of Betsy Jernigan? Probably born in SC.

Editor's Note
By this time next month, I'll be picking apples and grapes and putting up jelly. It is hard to believe we've almost lived here for a year now. I'm still unpacking boxes at my house. We finally got the coal out of the coal room and have turned it into a storage room. That has helped in getting the basement cleaned out a lot! I finally got around to unpacking my china and crystal and am happy to say, not a single crack or chip in the lot.
It is hard to believe that summer is over. It went so fast! Kim has gone and returned from her Alaska mission trip. It was quite an experience for her. I know that she will never forget the sights that she has seen or the people that she touched, and who touched her, while she was there. She came back even more firmly rooted in the desire to make mission work a big part of her future.
Cyndi finished her two summer college courses with a 4.0! We are very delighted and proud of her!
Krystal has just gotten her learner's permit. Pennsylvania just passed a law so that it will take her a year to get her real license. So in the meantime, her father and I will be teaching her the finer points of driving. So far, she managed to put gas in the car and stopped right on the penny of where I told her. And she is learning all the gauges and switches in the car. She has a mandatory 50 hour training to go through and that time is split up among certain lessons. So far she has a half hour. But I think that we will have time to work some more this weekend.
We are getting ready around here for a visit from my brother, Mark. He is coming to Pittsburgh for a conference and then spending the weekend with us. This of course has prompted us to start more projects! We are working on both bathrooms. The downstairs bathroom in the basement was never enclosed. Ed has been building a wall over the past week and almost has it done. When we get the downstairs bathroom in order, we are going to work on the wall in the upstairs bathroom shower. I think that we are going to put tile up. Ed has vacation next week, so hopefully we will be done when Mark arrives mid-September.
The twins have gone back to school, so it is a bit quieter around here now. Cyndi will start again next week, after the Labor Day holiday. I am contemplating heading back to work. I am a bit nervous, can't remember much for my resume, so it is taking forever to put it together. (Hint: Don't store your resume on a computer without a backup!) I don't even know what I am qualified to do, but figure that a temp service can help me out on that score.
Birthdays this month include my husband, Ed and my mom. Happy Birthday to both of you! And to all the other Jernigan birthday celebrants this month!
And last but not least...Happy Birthday to us! This is the first issue of the 5th year of the Jernigan Homepage. Can you believe it! I want to take the time to thank all of you for your contributions which have made this homepage possible. I couldn't have done all of this without you! So give yourselves a big pat on the back! As soon as you're done though, take a minute to send me more info and inquiries as well as upcoming reunions! I'll be waiting to hear from you!
Until then... Happy Hunting!

Marla Boots
