Editor's Correction: I goofed on the very first item in last month's Home Page, in which Kay was responding to a query that Sharon Tingley ran in another past Home Page. She wasn't responding to Sharon's Fannie Jernagon query in Vol. 45. She was responding to her query from Vol. 44 about Ellenor Buchanan who had the son James R. Jernigan. Sharon was asking who Ellenor's Jernigan husband was, and that was Kay's answer. Now, I ask, who else prints retractions on the top of the front page? Hope that clears up any confusion that some of you may be having about that info.

Naomi Buckner enjoyed the letter in the last newsletter about why we do genealogy and sent me this account of her own quest for knowledge of her family roots:
I know many years ago, 31 to be exact, I began my quest into my many family lines. As a child, I never had the privilege of having the first grandparent to relate their past to me. We did live nearby my mother's two sisters, and her brother from Climax GA would rotate visits to see each other, so I knew Uncle Bud's family. Dad's siblings lived in Columbia, SC and we did make trips there to visit them at times. Still nothing spoken about past family members on his side either.
My grandma Georgia Jernigan Page is buried at Hentown, just 7 miles North of Colquitt, GA. Mom and Dad are now with her. We always met with other families the day before Mothers Day to clean the entire cemetery, staying overnight with some cousins of my father. We even rode a Greyhound bus to get there from Columbus, and was put off right in front of their gate to the farm. I can remember it was a very long walk down to the house from the highway, in my child's eye anyway. Mother was so firm with the ticket clerk as he wanted to sell her a ticket to Colquitt, but she would have nothing to do with that, as it would cost a little more for the extra 7 miles. She was so funny doing that every year! Guess she saved a few pennies on the tickets as money was tight back then. I believe I remember taking a rake and hoe onto the bus to be certain we had enough tools to do the job ahead of us. Also I vividly remember sleeping on their feather beds, for I would sink right down into the feathers.
Don't know if I would have been receptive about discussing family that had passed on already if I had that privilege back then. I know that after moving to Florida in 1959, we would go back to GA as often as we could, and my father seemed as though he was losing it. He was deaf from the age of 14 and he too, may not have heard about past family as he was growing up. His Dad was 'killed' about 1898-1900 while he was still quite young. He would relate how he had written some first cousins in Jasper and Beaumont, TX to find out something, anything, about his ancestors. They did not know any more than he did, how sad! I asked Mom what did he want to find out about all those 'dead people' for? It was driving him crazy. I know my husband and I paid his bus ticket to Oleana State Park in Alachua Co, FL a couple of times for him to attend an 'Ellis' reunion there. He wanted to go so badly, he was willing to hitchhike, but I was not willing for him to do this. Too much danger!!! I tried to explain to him it was not safe to do so. He being deaf, but could read lips and could talk himself, was not able to find out much about those attending, One would have to look straight at him and move their lips for him to understand what they were saying. He did so enjoy knowing they were 'Ellis' by name, so he considered them 'his family'.
Mother had a broken hip after Christmas 1969 so I went up to take care of her after her surgery. While clearing out my fathers bedroom, I came across some family sheets stapled together they had given everyone that attended. I even attended one myself the first year after we had settled in Florida. This happened to be the year 'Walking Lawton" Chiles was entering politics for the first time and his mother, being from the Ellis clan, was in attendance campaigning every inch of the way, very hard, for him. Everyone on this list were Plantation owners and House of Burgess members way back, and I said "Where are the little dirt farmers, for that is where I came from"?
Before my last Uncle, and dad's brother, died in Jacksonville FL, I made a trip to get info from him as to family. What he knew anyway, as he was much older than Dad. He started me on a grand journey that has become very precious to me, finding out EVERYTHING I can about both sides of our family and including ALL collateral lines. Now all those old 'dead people' are driving me crazy and I love every minute of it!!!!!!! Wish I had done this in time to let Dad know what I found out thus far, he would be so proud to finally know something about his ancestors. I think he knows already, for he is now with them, and still watching over his family that is left here. Before Mom and her two sisters died, I was able to tell them more than they knew already about the Jernigan/Page lines, and for that I am also very proud to have had a part in doing so. Pure passion genealogy is!!!!

Donald L. Jernigan, Sr. of Springfield , Massachusetts writes:My father was named Willie E. Jernigan. I know that he was from around Rutledge, Georgia and had relatives there. I am not sure of my father's status, living or deceased. I am of African American descent and am very curious about the roots of my family. I have no knowledge of my father's family other than he had a sister in Greenville, Ga. who was named Josephine. My father was married to Mary C. Wright of Philomath, Ga. and they migrated to Springfield in the early forties. I would be most grateful if anyone could give me some leads or information on where I might begin to look for family roots/ties.
My father is listed as being from Congo, Ga on my birth certificate. I could not find such a town on any of the Georgia maps.
I have other siblings:You may contact Donald by e-mail or reach him by phone at 413 787-6196. This is a work number where he can be reached during the day from 8:30-4:30. He works in veteran's affairs for the city of Springfield.

North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868
Description: When planning to marry, the prospective groom took out a bond from the clerk
of the court in the county where the bride had her usual residence as surety that there was no legal obstacle to the proposed marriage. On file in the
North Carolina State Archives are 170,000 marriage bonds, covering the years 1741-1868. These records were abstracted by the Works Progress
Administration. Most of the bonds contain the following information: groom's
name, bride's name, date of bond, bondsmen, witnesses. For those with ancestors in early North Carolina, this will be a helpful database.
Extended Description: Additional information may include parents' names, date of the marriage,
person performing the ceremony, and other similar data.

Dixie Clonts is on a mission of the most honorable sort. Perhaps we can all help out. She sends the following:
Hi cousins and friends! Your help will be appreciated. I know that most of you are into genealogy as I am and if you have ever visited an older cemetery, you know what deplorable condition many of them are in. Are you aware that many states permit building on cemeteries if they are beyond a certain age?
Firms will bulldoze right over headstones without so much as an "I'm sorry that we're burying your ancestors and their history will be permanently lost but that's business." It's too late for many family gravesites and older cemeteries but something can be done to preserve what is left and I would appreciate it if you would take just a moment of your time to help. I have just read and signed the online petition. If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider signing yourself.

Brent Smith sends word of a huge Jernigan reunion. This is the first that I've heard of it, but if you are nearby, perhaps it would be fun to stop by! Maybe Brent can give you details if you want to go. Brent writes: There is a major Jernigan Family reunion at Hillbrook Camp off of I-640 expressway near Knoxville, TN the first weekend in Aug each year. Attendance runs in the hundreds from all over the USA.

Editor's Note
August is here. So far, we have had a mild summer. But now the natives are telling us that it is very hot (I think we made it to 82 with 72% humidity). At night it "only" goes down to the 60's, quite brutal! I don't know what they think, but this SC girl is loving it!
I must apologize to Brent Smith for putting him on the spot about contacting him for the reunion. Hopefully he will forgive me!
We are a little busy around here now with Cydni attending summer college courses. I am driving Cyndi to and from college (an hour round trip, twice a day) every Monday thru Thursday. That is getting old. We are going to have to get another car on the road around here soon! But she is doing very well and will be enrolling for the fall in September. She decided to take a couple of courses in the summertime to get her in the swing of things!
The twin's are contemplating getting their driver's permits. They just finished driver's ed during summer school and Krystal is going for her physical today so that she can take her test soon. Kim will be holding off for awhile until she gets back from Alaska. Actually, she doesn't seem to be that concerned about learning to drive yet. Perhaps she is waiting for Cydni and Krystal to finish fighting over who drives the car before she jumps in.
Kim is busily packing and trying to figure out how to get everything in her suitcases for her Alaska Mission trip. I know that she is excited, and maybe a tiny bit hesitant. There will be a lot of firsts for her - flying, helping with bible school with children who speak 40 different languages! Kim's charges don't speak any English and she will be teaching them drama. They say that actions speak louder than words, so I guess she'll find out! She is also going to be street witnessing. And there is always the possibility of crossing paths with bears and moose! So she will have a number of eye-opening experiences, I'm sure. I know that she will enjoy the beauty of Alaska. I think we bought her well over a dozen rolls of film so she can bring some of that back with her! If you would like to be a part of her mission trip, you can pray for Kim and her mission team. There is a site at: http://home.att.net/~mboots/Alaska.htm which has their calendar of events and specific things for which you can pray.
School will start for Krystal and Kim on August 31. Seems like summer just started and it is already time to start gathering stuff for their first day of school in the fall. Actually, I overbought last year, so besides a few packs of pens and pencils and any specialty items that they'll need, I think we have the school supply list covered.
I am contemplating going to work this fall. It should be interesting! It has been a number of years since I last entered (and exited) the work force. I'm not even sure what I want to be yet! ;-) I'll probably either go to a temp service or substitute teach. I am planning to be able to count on Cyndi to give Krystal and Kim rides to and from their varied activities if I go back to work. That will make my life a little easier.
I hope that I have caught up on my emails. If I promised you something and I haven't emailed it in the last day or so, please contact me again. Your original email must have gotten misplaced or mysteriously disappeared. ( I hate it when that happens!) So Please contact me again!!!!! Things are finally slowing down a little and I do have more time to answer my mail now! Also if you have stuff to put on the homepage, send it on! Remember, someday, your descendants may be reading this homepage! You don't want them to be as frustrated as you have been do you? Share your info! I look forward to hearing from you.
Until then... Happy Hunting!
