Here are some tips from George G. Morgan.

Questioning Bible Entries

Be careful when examining family Bible records concerning births, marriages, deaths and other events. These entries may not be primary records, but instead may be secondary sources that require additional proof of their veracity. They may have been entered or transcribed later, thereby making their accuracy questionable.

Check the copyright or publication date of the Bible. If dates on family entries precede the Bible's date, they are secondary sources. If all the entries appear to be written in the same hand, with the same pen or pencil, and at the same time, be skeptical -- they were probably transcribed. If entries have dates prior to World War II and appear to have been written
with a ball-point pen, they are definitely transcribed. (Ball-point pens were not patented until 1938 did not come into general use until late in World War II.)

Sharon Tingley passed along this by an unknown author:

WHY WE DO IT

Today I want to describe for you what finding our ancestors means in terms of being one of the major reasons why I do what I do these days on the Internet, for myself, for my children and grandchildren and for others.... I have an idea that similar circumstances are the reason many researchers are involved as well. I think more than a few of you will identify with my thoughts and motivations here...

I loved that old home place dearly, as many of you loved a similar place that now exists only in your minds and hearts. I frequently "walk" through it, escaping today's to yesterdays and memories, willing myself to remember the touch of fabric, the coolness of hardwood floors on my bare feet, the weight of a fat white china cup in my hands, the way the afternoon sun slanted and cast shadows on the floor of a long front porch. Those memories are a comfort to me, because beyond the "things" I have that were there, they are all I have left of the place I knew. I know that many of you feel the same, and have another place you "walk" for comfort at times.

But those memories I have, and you have, will be gone all too soon, leaving this world at the same time that we do...just as the memories of our grandfathers and great-grandmothers left with them, and unless they are given and passed on, it is as if those things had never been other than what "facts" are left behind on scraps of paper.

This came to me in a very real way recently when the daughter of my first cousin (who is now gone to the next world) contacted me. A young mother, the family's heritage is beginning to be of importance to her. And she asked for my memories, the memories her mother died before she could pass on...and so I have begun to write them for her and to give her what I cannot leave in any tangible form other than description. I have walked her through the family home place willing her to see through my eyes, and I have introduced her to the great-grandfather she never knew, trying to give her a balanced picture of him, the good and the bad, making him human and of breathing living flesh for her.

For the same reason, documenting the family line in that country is also important. I want to know who the grandparents of my grandfather were, because I have no memories of him telling me about them. I know he must have treasured memories of those who lived in his time, and I know he must have treasured the stories that he heard of those who did not. Because it was important to him, and knowing him, I know it is important to me. My grandfather was of another world and time, as many of yours were. And in that day and time, the passing on of roots came through the oral tradition. They little understood that the coming ways of this world would leave little inclination or time for oral passing of roots...and that unless a generation following them had the wisdom to record it, all was lost.

I rue that I was young when he sat so long talking his long tales of "who beget who" and of things that had happened, where they happened, and those who peopled those stories. I am frustrated that I, as did his children, "tuned" much of this out. It is not just a matter of "proving" a lineage...much, much more, it is a matter of salvaging that which was important to one I loved...and giving it to those like my cousin's children and my own children.... passing on the things that were of importance in an endless chain of loving memories. I cannot turn back the clock, and I cannot make my grandfather be here again with me at a time in which I am ready and mature enough now to listen to his endless stories that wound on hour after hour....but I still draw breath, and I can piece together what I can find, add to that what I do remember... and give the next generation something far more precious than the money.

We no longer have our Adams or Barker or Hixson or Colbaugh or Lovelady, etc. homes in Tennessee, and even some of the family burial grounds where my great grandfather, great great grandfather and possibly before that are buried, have been taken from us. All we have is our history....and so you see why it is important beyond description that we preserve our history. It is all we have left of our roots. And I suspect that many of you, if for whatever reason your ancestral lands and home place are gone, feel the same.

Please remember this when others contact you. Their reasons may have nothing to do with wanting to join an elite organization, may have nothing to do with idle curiosity, may have nothing to do with simple scholarship and an abiding love of research....more often, I am finding, it is a situation in which family history is an anchor to hold to in this fast paced and all too impersonal world. It is a situation in which all the heritage or "home" a family has left is its history. It is a situation in which a person regrets not finding important those things elders talked of at the time they talked of them, and with maturity wants to salvage what they can of the memories of
elders who went on before them. Your words and help are often far more important than you can possibly realize, and will cause a heart to leap, bring tears to an eye in gratitude.

In other words, it is often a matter of the "heart" and any small tidbit or fact, any direction you can find time to give, is more meaningful than gold to that person who longs so desperately to find his or her humble link in a long chain...and pass it on, giving the generation to come roots and a sense of belonging in a world that is uncertain. "...and departing leave behind us,
footprints in the sands of time."

Inquiries

Sherry Jernigan is on a mission.  She writes:
My father is John Baynes (Baines, Bains) Jernigan, Jr., born in North Carolina in 1919 and raised in Norfolk, Virginia.  His mother was Eula B. Jernigan and his father was John Baynes (Baines, Bains) Jernigan, Sr.  My father's parents separated when he was a boy and it's believed that his father, who was a carpenter, died while working at Williamsburg.  My father's mother knew, or told, very little about my grandfather and his family.  We have almost no information about my father's father, much less more distant ancestors, and as my dad approaches his 81st birthday, I would love to be able to give back to him some part of his family's history!  Can anyone help?
Thanks very much.

Sherry Fussell is desperately trying to find her grandmother. The only info that she has is: Her name was Nola Jernigan She married my grandfather who was Ossie Fussell. They lived in Wayne County Georgia in 1920 I know because that's where my father (William Alonzo Fussell) was born. They also lived around Ware, Clinch, and Coffee counties. I don't know where or when she was born or buried. I know she died with the measles. I can estimate her death between 1925 and 1930. I hope someone can help.. Thank you.

Kathy Torticill has a bit of a mystery on her hands. She writes: My father was born in 1906 in Sherman Texas. His father was Emanuel Jarnagan and his mother was Annie Wright. My father had two brothers.  My father's name was Wright Emanuel Jarnagan. He had two brothers (one younger & one older).  One was named Edward (Gus) Jarnagan and the other I am not sure of.

I have been trying to trace my Grandfather's history.  When I was a child I remember my father telling me they had relatives in Tennessee and in Chicago.  As a matter of fact, he told me that his father was actually a descendant from the Ross family out of Chicago and was kidnapped when he was little and taken to Tennessee.  Sounds like an interesting ordeal, but I don't know how to begin to confirm this information. I do know that my grandfather was a professor of music and did pass away from a "long illness" in 1930.  He along with my grandmother is buried in Sherman Texas.

One of my father's brother's wound up in Galveston Texas and the other in Odessa Texas.
I do know that my father and his 2 brothers split up 50 years ago due to a family argument.  My father never contacted them again and he has since passed on in 1996.  He is buried in San Marcos Texas, which is where he retired and we settled in 1968. I would like to know if I can confirm any of this and if so, who are my relatives?

If anyone can help Kathy, please contact her.

Editor's Note

The year is half over!  What have you accomplished thus far?  I hope more than I have! :-0

Actually, I got a lot accomplished the first week of June and I guess I've been on vacation mode since then.  I have been slowly transferring back issues of the homepage over to their new homes.  If you like accessing the "opening page" the new address for that is: http://home.att.net/~mboots/Jernigan_Homepage/directory.htm  This page can always be accessed from the bottom of each homepage.

Also, you may note that there is a counter on the bottom of this page.  There will be one on the bottom of all future issues of the Jernigan Genealogy Homepage.  Just a little added something that some of you have requested.

We went to the Grand Review 2000 in Harrisburg as I told y'all we would last newsletter.  Despite the horrendous disorganization of the event, the returning of the colors for the 101st went off quite well!  I don't think that there were too many dry eyes in the park that day as the final act of the 101st PA was performed by the descendants of those brave men.  So that made our weekend.  From there we went off to relax in the Pocono Mountains.  It was a very welcomed vacation.

Since we have been back, I have been rather relaxed and haven't done much except going to ballgames and other family outings.  I love summer! Krystal only has 3 more games to go.  Even though this year hasn't been as successful as her other years, I find that I enjoy watching them play.

Kim, our youngest daughter is in SC until mid-July.  She is down there enjoying the company of family and friends while earning that last bit of money for her trip to Alaska.  She will be home for a mere 3 weeks before heading off to Alaska in August.  So she will be gone most of the summer!

Krystal is diligently studying her driver's manual.  She hopes to take her written test very soon.  Cyndi is still working towards getting her real driver's license.  She hasn't had much chance to drive lately as we have been gone so much.  She plans to take the driving test soon. For now I am cherishing the freedom of having my car to myself.  But that will be short-lived as both Krystal and Cyndi will be borrowing it every chance they get very soon I'm sure.

Cyndi will be starting college in a few weeks.  She has decided to take a couple of courses during the summer to jumpstart her for the fall.  Hard to believe our little girl is starting college!

We will be celebrating the fourth in numerous ways this year.  Krystal is dressing up in her civil war attire and marching in the local parade.  Ed will be speaking in a neighboring town as his ancestor, Edward Nicholas Boots.  I will probably be torn between getting the two of them where they need to be on time!  Later in the afternoon, we will be going to one of Ed's cousins for a barbeque, homemade ice cream, games, fun and laughter.  And if Krystal can figure out which of the four fireworks shows she wants to go to, I suppose we'll end the evening, stretched out on a blanket and watching the fireworks paint the sky amongst the stars.

But even with all of the fun, remember what the fourth is really about.  FREEDOM!  Thank a veteran for what they have done and endured so that you are free today to speak, live and be who you are.

Happy Fourth of July!  See you in August!

Until then... Happy Hunting!

Your editor,
Marla Boots
