William Morgan recently acquired a great book about the 3rd Seminole War. He writes, "I'm really enjoying it, and found a few references to Aaron Jernigan that I thought I'd pass along."

James W. Covington
The Billy Bowlegs War (1855-1858): The Final Stand of the Seminoles Against the Whites.
The Mickler House Publishers
Chuluota, FL, 1982
Pages 23, 37, and 56.

In 1849, Benjamin Hopkins besieged Washington with letters stating that he had "under his control the only perfect interpreter in the state," and offering to negotiate with the Indians. In accordance with the provisions of a measure passed by the legislature January 20, 1851, Governor Thomas Brown was able to appoint Hopkins as commander of the Florida militia. In order to give his men some experience in the field, Hopkins selected Captain AARON
JERNIGAN to lead a patrol into an area where some Seminoles were believed to be wandering beyond the unmarked reserve boundaries. The captain took five men on a jaunt near the headwaters of the St. Johns River and returned with one hundred and twenty hogs said to have been the property of the Indians. At least one person claimed that Jernigan was angry at the Seminoles for killing some of his cattle and had seized the hogs as partial compensation.

On February 2, 1852, Jernigan moved out on another patrol with twelve men and was able to seize several Indians. While following a faint trail, the militiamen overtook a brave, his wife, mother, and a child and quickly captured them. Jernigan, his men and prisoners, continued their trek around the south end of Lake Tohopekaliga where many signs were noticed, but could
not apprehend any other Indians. One Seminole was seen but, amid gunfire, he eluded the would-be captors and soon Jernigan received another setback when the man, wife and child made their escape, leaving the old woman behind. Within a short time, she hung herself with strings taken from a bearskin and died in the hut utilized as a detention area.

On January 12, 1856, Governor James Broome tentatively accepted six companies into state service to protect the frontier. The entire force was offered to the Jefferson Davis, then U.S. Secretary of War (later President of the Confederate States of America). But, Davis was willing to accept only three mounted companies commanded by Simeon Sparkman, William Hooker, and AARON JERNIGAN.

According to federal reports, Jernigan was the least effective of all the militia officers that defended the eastern frontier. His conduct from April to June, 1856, was reported to have been disgraceful. A Lieutenant Taylor reported, "During the past three months he has been either drunk or sick." Jefferson Davis wrote to Governor Broome about the situation, "Complaints
have been made by citizens of Florida to the military commander of the turbulent conduct of some of the volunteers, particularly of Captain Jernigan's Company, and it is said they were dreaded more than the Indians."

Finally, Jernigan was relieved of his command on charges of alcoholism and neglect of duty, and a Lieutenant Rutland was elected as his replacement. It took some time for the new leader to assume his duties, because Jernigan was out hunting for cattle and could not be notified concerning the change in command or any other order.

Every effort was made to be as accurate as possible in recording the tombstone information. However, there were a number of unmarked graves and several were illegible because of age.

The cemetery recording was done by Carroll and Mary Alice Griffin of Valdosta, Georgia, and was finished in March, 1998.

Also, I have just received a copy of the record of the wedding of Aaron Jernigan and Mary Jernigan in Houston County Georgia issued Jan. 4, 1835.  They were married by Benj. Webb, Minister of the Gospel. This is not the first time that Benjamin Webb has been connected to the

New Information on Willis Jernigan, Upson County, GA to Alabama

Sharon J. Tingley and Barbara Jernigan Fowler have received some information just these past few days from Dorothy Smithart  who is married to Billy Smithart, a minister from Louisiana. She says that Billy is the great grandson of Willis Jernigan and his second wife Charlotte Lavinia Pool, born 4-12-1853 and died 2-21-1926. You will recall that we have had an earlier article on Willis and his first wife Sarah Bailey, who were married in Upson County, Georgia. You may recall that Willis and Charlotte had two children, William Henry, also called Willis, and Lethie who was born in Jan. of 1885. Because Willis was not living on the 1900 census and the fact that his daughter was born in Jan. of 1885, we estimated that he died around 1884.

Dorothy says that Willis, the son, was born 1-20-1881, died 10-30 1956, in Greenville, Al., buried in Pike Co., AL at Sandfield, between Union Springs and Troy. He married three times. His first wife was Catie Victoria Edwards, daughter of James Hamilton Edwards (1859 –1922) and her mother was Queen Victoria Hicksman (1859 –1944). We have written about their descendants, but Dorothy has filled in the complete names and some dates. Catie Edwards was born 9-2-1883 and died 9-24-1907. She is buried at Sandfield Cemetery in Pike County, Alabama. Their children: Vera Irene, born 7-3-1900, died 6-24-1978; Bertha Melinda, born1-21-1903. Ulas Lafett, born 7-16-1905, died 5-6-1945; Willis Franklin, born 8-18-1907, died 8-31-1939.

Willis married his second wife, Louise Williamson, daughter of Benjamin Franklin Williamson and Anna Day, after the 1910 census because he has no wife on the census. His mother Charlotte was living with him as were two children identified as his niece and nephew. They have the surname of Cook. Gladys Louise Jernigan, daughter of William Henry and Louise Williamson was born 1-9-1912. She was their only child. She married Cleve Smithart and these are the parents of Billy Smithart.

Willis then married Sally Anna Kirkland, the daughter of John Wesley Kirkland and Jeanette Smithart. She was born 2-21-1888, married 1912, and died 4-16-1975. Children: Minnie Lee, b 5-18-1913 (living); John Eldridge, b. 6-10-1915, d, 7-8-1930; Annie Pearl, b.9-14-1917; James Harold, b.7-29-1924, d.8-9-1979. Now Dorothy tells me that Jeanette Smithart, mother of Sally Anna Kirkland, is the daughter of John Smithart, the paternal great grandfather of her husband Billy Smithart. You figure out this relationship!

Barbara Fowler has been very busy this month and sends this article also! This is in response to an inquiry on last month's homepage.

Joe and Emma Jernigan

By Barbara J. Fowler

Martha Griffin sent in a query last month concerning the family of Joe and Emma Jernigan. She related that Joe Jernigan died in1905, the night that his son Thomas Franklin was born. A few days after this homepage came out, I received a note from Jimmy Jernigan saying that his father was T.F. Jernigan and his grandparents were Joe and Emma Jernigan. He mentioned Irwin County, Georgia so that got my attention. Jimmy is Martha’s uncle and they are now in touch with each other and with Shirley Durden, also from this line.

I checked the Irwin County Genweb page and found that there was a will #647 listed for Joseph H. Jernigan, 1 905. That date matched the date that Martha had given for the death of Joe Jernigan. There was also a will #667 for Aaron Junigan, 1879. Shirley Durden has worked on this line and she is in the process of obtaining a copy of these wills. After seeing this, I was convinced that Joe Jernigan must be connected to Aaron Jernigan and his wife Mary Jernigan of Irwin County. I believe that we will find that the will of Aaron Junigan, 1879 will be that of Aaron Jernigan (b. 1799) as his son, Aaron Jernigan (b. 1841) was still living in 1879.

I decided then to search for Joseph H. Jernigan, thinking that this was probably the Joe Jernigan, father of Thomas F. Jernigan. On World Family Tree, Vol. 24 #1304 submitted by Ellen Ellis, I found that Aaron Jernigan (b. 1841) and Zilpha Gray had a son named Joseph H. Jernigan. b.1873. The date would be about right to make him the Joe Jernigan who m. in 1925 to Emma. (I have written to Ms. Ellis but her latest address in Tampa, is no longer active. I suspect Ms. Ellis is connected to Linda Gail Jernigan, daughter of Thomas Franklin Jernigan, who m. an Ellis. Perhaps she will see this and send us some more information.)

Jimmy Jernigan asked me to contact Helen Turk Watson who has recently written Descendants of William and Rebecca Liles Watson and Allied Families. Ms. Watson had some of the Jernigans to marry into the Watson family. She told me that Joe Jernigan’s wife was Emma Mixon and that his father was Aaron Jernigan. Because of the dates, this would have to be Aaron Jernigan b. 1841, and the one who m. Zilpha Gray.

Jimmy informs us that his mother, Frances Idoma Jones Jernigan, is living and he visited her and obtained a little more information. We now have the full names of the children of Thomas and Idoma Jones. Idoma Jones Jernigan also said that Archie Daniel Jernigan was M. to Daisy Jones and was her sister. Mrs. Jernigan also reported that Joe and Emma also had a daughter, Mary Jane Jernigan, who m. Ollie Riles. She is now deceased. Mrs. Jernigan also gave us the information of Archie Daniel and Daisy Jones Jernigan.

Below are family group sheets that are missing some information. We hope that readers and researchers will be able to supply the missing information.

Inquiries

Bill Boulineau is seeking info on the Jesse Jernigan (1805-1880 GA) line.

I am still trying to identify the Elizabeth, 12, listed in Jesse's family in 1870. She is not listed in 1860, and would have been 2 then. I do not believe she is his dau., he and his wife would be to old to have a dau. that young. I think it is a relative, but haven't found one that fits the age as yet. Any help would be appreciated.

I am looking for any information on the Jernigans who lived in Oklahoma in early 1900's. My g grandfather, Chester Smith, married a Jernigan but I don't know her name or any other family information.

I know this is sketchy info at best, but if anyone can help Karleta, please let her know.

Editor's Note

Hi y'all,

I'm supposed to be putting up jelly, but our apples have been hit with high winds and worms!  Ugh!  The grapes haven't faired much better, but there may still be some hope for enough to nibble on.  Oh well...

We had a wonderful visit with my brother as he came to spend a couple of days with us.  It has been two years since we were able to get together!  He lives in TX and I am now here in PA.  But it won't be that long again as we will see him and his family at Christmas in SC.

Cyndi has gotten her real license!  I am finding it a great asset as now I can send her on all those errands and she can run her sisters to and fro.  It saves me a lot of time!  But she better watch out - Krystal has her permit and is eager to test her wings.  We are working on getting the basics down with her.  She won't get her Cinderella license for about another 5 months, so she has plenty of time to practice. Kim tells us that she doesn't have time to study for her driver's permit.  (Why should she bother, when she has her sister to chauffeur her around!)

We had a very sad loss this month.  Sasha, our dog, died.  We had her for over 12 years and she was a very good dog.  We will miss her very much.

It is getting a bit chilly around here in PA, but the temps are supposed to get back up to the low 70's this week.  We had our first frost on Friday.  The leaves are starting to turn.  Fall is probably the most beautiful time of year in PA. Driving around can take your breath away as you turn corners to view incredible color schemes painted across the hills and mountains.  Right now we are just getting a peek at what is in store as a few yellow, orange and red trees are showing up amongst the green ones.  I am really looking forward to the next couple of weeks!

It is hard to believe that we have been here for a year now.  We are still sorting through boxes.  I doubt that we will ever get completely unpacked!  Believe it or not, I was just going through some boxes that had been in our last house's attic since the move before this one!  That is what leads me to believe that the same may happen again.  Especially since we cleaned out the coal room and put a bunch of boxes in there to go through later.  We'll see...

Thanks for the info that y'all have sent me this month.  Please keep it coming!  I look forward to hearing from you!

Until then... Happy Hunting!

Marla Boots
