Information Exchange

The following are corrections and updates to the information contributed by Lena West to the March, 2000 Jernigan Home Page. Lena descends from Jesse & Rebecca (Mims) Jernigan.

Clement Lamar Jernigan: Clement is the son of Jesse & Rebecca (Mims) Jernigan and it is believed that he went to Texas. The following information comes from "Old Northwest Texas Vol. I-B, Navarro Co. 1846-1860" pub. by Ft. Worth Gen. Soc. 1980:

1860 census, Navarro Co., TX, pg. 7, #46-#40:
Jernigan, C. L., 49, TN, saddler
Laura, 42, IL
Serena, 16, IL
S. B., 11 (male) IL
J. A., 7 (female) TX
Carter, J. H., 30, OH, shoe-maker
Glass, Eli, 25, TN, saddler

JERNIGAN, Clement L. Arrived Navarro Co., TX from IL ca 1852, purchased property in Corsicana, and established a saddle shop; is enumerated on the 1860 census as C. L. Jernigan; however, the surname is sometimes spelled "Jarnigan" on records. He was b. ca 1811 TN; m. Laura, b. c1818 IL. Ellen Johnergin [sic] who m. Navarro Co. 28 Dec. 1856 to R. A. VanHorn, was probably dau of C. L. Jernigan; she was b. c1838 IL.

Corrections to William Moore Jernigan, James F. Jernigan, and Luther C. Jernigan:  These 3 sons of William Henry Jernigan and Dicy Moore were all born in Henry Co., TN (not TX).

Luther C. Jernigan: The full name of his wife was Victoria Bell. More information about Luther C. can be found at the following web site:  http://fly.hiwaay.net/~dmglenn/indh_m.htm

Correction to Mary Tabitha Jernigan: (dau of William Henry Jernigan & Dicy Moore) She was b. abt 1842 in TN (not 1849).

Correction to George Wesley Jernigan: (son of William Henry Jernigan & Dicy Moore) He was b. 12 Aug 1849 TN (not 1878).

Johnnie Horton ran a query last month about James F. Jarnagin of Fannin Co., TX. We think that James F. was the son of Thomas Jarnagin and Unity Bledsoe of Dickson Co., TN & Polk Co., MO. James' brother, Thomas Hart Benton Jarnagin, was also living in Fannin Co., TX for the 1870 census. Here is some more information that Johnnie has found about James F.

Chris Nelson provides the following information about John Montgomery Jarnagin, the son of U.S. Senator Spencer Jarnagin and his first wife, Clarissa Montgomery. Chris is writing a book about the Walker-Crabb filibustering expeditions to Baja, and John M. Jarnagin played a prominent role in the former. Chris says, "I hope my book stimulates further interest in Jarnagin, as well as others forgotten by history."

An obit from the "Trinity Journal" of Weaverville, CA, states that John M. Jarnagin died on April 16, 1858 from a wound received in Walker's expedition to Lower California in 1854. Jarnagin was described as being 36 years old when he passed away, and an "attorney of great professional ability." A member of the Trinity Bar when he died, he was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Alabama when he was 21 years old. About 1853 he moved from Mobile, AL to California. He was Secretary of State on the Sonora expedition with Walker in 1854, and the wound he received there incapacitated him and ultimately lead to his death. Upon return to San Francisco from Sonora, he was tried for violation of neutrality laws and was acquitted. Afterwards, he ran for District Judge in Humboldt, CA, and failed to get the American Party nomination by one vote. He came to Weaverville in 1855, where he died.

John M. Jarnagin's obituary states that he had a sister named Mrs. W. Brown II (Margaret), who lived in New Orleans. She supported him financially during his last years in California when he was unable to work due to his wound. On his deathbed, John M. talked about this sister Margaret, who had not forgotten him as he "halted down the hopeless avenues of life."

Chris reports the existence of the Spencer Jarnagin collection of papers, which can be ordered from the Southern Historical Collection, Manuscripts Dept., Wilson Library, Univ. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Refer to Collection Number 1069-z. There are 16 items described as "Letters from Whig U.S. Senator Jarnagin, written chiefly from Washington, D.C., to his wife concerning politics and personal news." Also included in this Collection is a letter dated Dec. 2, 1845 from J. M. Jarnagin to his stepmother, Mary Ann (Kinder) Jarnagin, describing his business sojourn in Mobile, AL.

If there is anyone out there who has more information about John M. Jarnagin or his sister Margaret, including correspondence or pictures, Chris would love to hear from you. Please email him at walker@usinter.net.

Wynell Simpson writes: I have been for some many years researching the family of the David Jernigan who left a will in Wayne Co., NC 1783. His wife was Alice.

Some researchers have David's wife as Alice Page. I would like to prove whether or not Alice is a Page. I wonder if others would share the source for Page as a last name for Alice.

We know that David and Alice's son David Jr. named a son Page, and I believe there was a male with the last name Page who left something in his will to an Alice Jernigan. Where and when and which Page was that?

Reunions

Linda Rogers Curtis and Judith Jernigan Oldham are your contacts for the Coffee County, Tennessee Jernigan Cemetery Association Formation Meeting. Here are the details on the meeting:  Descendants of Alexander C. Jernigan of Johnston County, North Carolina and Coffee County Tennessee are planning a Cemetery Association Formation Meeting for the first weekend of May, 2000. The purpose of the get together will include work on repairing/restoring the deteriorated Jernigan Cemetery across from the original Alexander C. Jernigan home site. Plans for the meeting include the formation of a Cemetery Association, for those interested, to continue a degree of maintenance of the cemetery. The meeting will also include an opportunity to exchange and share information, and to perhaps plan a more extensive Middle Tennessee Area Jernigan Reunion. The original Alexander C. Jernigan home site is the property and home site so beautiful described by Varna Thompson Jernigan in her book, "Leaves of the Jernigan Tree".

The meeting will be held at the Civil War Confederate Cemetery off exit I 24, Gossburg, Coffee County, Tennessee, Saturday, 9:00 AM.

Please wear working and hiking clothes/shoes and bring garden/repair tools, and cleaning supplies, if you have them. Mostly, your presence, willingness, labor and Jernigan family information will be greatly appreciated!

We plan a pot luck picnic on Saturday and Sunday for lunch.

Linda has located the grave sites of Needham Jernigan ( (son of Alexander) and Mary "Polly" Jernigan (daughter of Lewis Jernigan) . She and her husband have visited the Alexander C. Jernigan home site and discovered the Jernigan cemetery. They has also discovered some very interesting history regarding the Jernigan land in this area. The surrounding area, she reports, is beautiful and full of history. We hope to locate the nearby grave sites of Alexander C. Jernigan and Elizabeth Farmer Jernigan.

Linda and Judith will supply you with directions, maps, and information regarding the Jernigan Cemetery and the Civil War Confederate Cemetery, and the meeting. Please contact them regarding your interest and participation.

Editor's Note

Well, this has been a busy month as usual in the Boots household.  I turned 38 this past month while spending a very nice day with my family.  We've been trying to make room for the last truckload of stuff that we will be moving up here this next week and the rest of the time has been spent trying to keep up my already full schedule on the side as well!

We leave Monday to go to SC for the final leg of our move.  The girls will be staying here under the watchful eye of Ed's Aunt Ruth.  We will be down south for just under a week as we pack, sort and disassemble stuff for the move as well as get the house clean enough for the next tenants.   I'm sure that we will also be squeezing in visits with relatives and a few business contacts for me.  This last load is mainly car parts and stuff that belongs to Ed.   You know, stuff that we've been able to live without, but had to go get sometime!   It will be nice to have everything in the same state for once!

I spent the last few days practically living at the church getting ready for a huge rummage sale and then working it today and yesterday.  It was amazing how much stuff was donated to the youth for this sale that will help them pay for their mission trip to Alaska.  I don't know the exact total, but I think that it is around $1500.00.  That will be split between the 20 people going, so Kim will get about $75.00.  Next weekend she will be selling subs which should net her another $75.00.  So she is doing pretty good on raising money for her trip.

I also spent a number of days with a physical therapist this past month.  I was having terrible pain in my shoulder.   I've had problems with it for 10 years or so.  I got my limit of cortisone shots, so this time they tried a different approach.  I have a little more movement than before and have been given exercises to do to hopefully keep improving my condition.   At least the pain is gone!  So I'm very happy about that.

Thanks for sending in info, but as this is a never-ending process, I always need more!  So keep sending in the info and inquiries!  I look forward to hearing from you!

Until then... Happy Hunting!

Your editor,
Marla Boots
