Descendants of William & Elizabeth Emily (Sharp) JERNIGAN

FIRST GENERATION

1. William JERNIGAN was born about 1810 in Raleigh, NC. He died after 1886. He was buried in Oakey Streak Methodist Church Cemetery, Butler Co., AL. Information on the family of William and Emily Sharp Jernigan comes from a combination of several sources, including Clodyne Foster and Jennifer Jernigan Coker, descendants of this couple, and the PAF files at the LDS Church, which were also submitted by descendants, Jesse Edward "Bud" and Marion Jackson Josey.

William moved to GA at a very early age. He married Elizabeth Emily Sharp (or, her name may have been Frances Elizabeth), and they later moved to Montgomery, AL and finally settled in Butler Co. in the Oakey Streak Community. William served in Civil War, CSA 1861-1865, Co. C, 33rd AL Regiment (according to his tombstone).

Some of the records found for William in Montgomery Co., AL include the following: June 8, 1838, William Jernigan was a buyer in the estate sale of Elisha Moseley. William and family are listed on the 1840 Montgomery Co., AL census, #151. Nearby are Sarah Jernigan, age 40-50, (possibly William's mother?), & 4 Sharp families. They are also found on the 1850 Montgomery Co., AL census in Dist. #1, #603: Wm. Journegan, 39, NC, farmer, $1000; Elizabeth, 29, GA; David P., 10, AL; Mary A., 9, AL; Sarah J., 7, AL; Alsy W., 5, AL; Wm., 3, AL; Emily F., 2, AL; unnamed female, 1/12, AL.

45 i. James Mack JERNIGAN. James Mack JERNIGAN is the father of Jennifer (Jernigan) Coker.

Since William and Emily's first-born son was named David Page JERNIGAN, and they also named a daughter Alcy/Alice, could Wm. have been related to David & Alice (PAGE?) JERNIGAN of Wayne Co., NC? David & Alice had a son named Page, who was married to Sarah (EDWARDS?). Could she have been the Sarah Jernigan who lived nearby to William in the 1840 Montgomery Co., AL census? Who were the parents of Annie Elizabeth JERNIGAN and Charles Edgar JERNIGAN, who married two of the Josey children?

*****

The following history of the Jernigan family in Randolph Co., GA, descendants of Joseph and Zany (Lindsay) Jernigan, comes from the combined efforts of several people. Velma Shaw Beale is a 3rd-great granddaughter of Joseph and Zany (Lindsay) Jernigan; Bonnie Taft is a 2nd-great granddaughter, Naomi Buckner has done a great deal of research on these families in southern GA; and James Palmer is a native of Randolph Co. and he located information about this line in several area history books that are in his possession.   Sharon Tingley is the one who sent it all to me!

Descendants of JOSEPH JERNIGAN

FIRST GENERATION

1. Joseph JERNIGAN, the son of James and Jennet Jernigan of Effingham/Bullock Co., GA, was born about 1790. He was married to Zany LINDSAY on 16 Feb 1817 in Laurens Co., GA. Zany LINDSAY was born about 1805 in GA. In the 1850 census, Randolph Co. GA, dated 8-16-1850, pg. 354, family #170, Zany is shown as the head of household. Zany Jernigan, 45, b GA, can't read/write; Jackson, 19, laborer, b GA; Charles, 17, laborer, b GA; John, 14, laborer, b GA; Cynthia, 16, b, GA. Joseph JERNIGAN and Zany LINDSAY had the following children:

+2    i.    Joseph Jackson "Jack" JERNIGAN.
    +3    ii.    Charles J. JERNIGAN.
    +4    iii.    Cynthia JERNIGAN.
    +5    iv.    John JERNIGAN.

SECOND GENERATION

2. Joseph Jackson "Jack" JERNIGAN was born on 14 Nov 1829 in GA. He died on 10 Mar 1902 in Randolph Co., GA. He was buried in Pleasant Hill Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Carnegie, Randolph Co., GA. There's a possibility that Jackson's full name is James Jackson Jernigan, rather than Joseph Jackson. In the 1860 Randolph Co. census he is listed as Joseph J., yet in the 1870 Randolph census he appears as James J.

Jack Jernigan fought in the Civil War and served in GA Int. 13th Bn, (St. Guards) Douglass' Company. He was a Mason.

Jack was married to Elizabeth Katherine "Katie" CANNON on 9 Jan 1851 in Randolph Co., GA. Elizabeth Katherine "Katie" CANNON was born on 12 Aug 1829 as shown on her gravestone. However, there are some discrepancies as to her birthdate. In the 1860 census, her birth year would be figured as 1833/1834, and in the 1850 census (still with her Cannon family) she is listed as being 16 years old, which puts her birth year about 1834. She died on 29 Jun 1895. She was buried in Pleasant Hill Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Carnegie, Randolph Co., GA. She belonged to the Eastern Star. Joseph Jackson "Jack" JERNIGAN and Elizabeth Katherine "Katie" CANNON had the following children:

    +6    i.    Sarah Ann K. "Annie" JERNIGAN.
+7    ii.    Zennie Arkansas "Kansas" JERNIGAN. (Click to see picture of  Zennie Arkansas "Kansas" Jernigan Culbreth.)
8    iii.    Jefferson L. JERNIGAN was born about 1857 in GA. Lived in Laurel Hill, FL at the time of his sister Zennie's death about 1936.
    +9    iv.    Cynthia JERNIGAN.
+10    v.    Albert Riley JERNIGAN Sr..
11    vi.    Stephen A. J. JERNIGAN was born on 22 Sep 1866. He died on 29 Jun 1888 in Randolph Co., GA. He was buried in Pleasant Hill Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Carnegie, Randolph Co., GA. Tombstone says "s/o J. J. & Catherine E. Jernigan". We think the mother should be Elizabeth Katherine rather than Catherine E.
+12    vii.    James F. "Jim" JERNIGAN.

Jack was married a second time to a woman named Martha, but we are not sure about her surname. There is apparently a marriage record in Randolph Co. dated 17 Jul 1898 showing her name as Martha J. JENKS. Yet another county record gives her name as Martha Nichols, the widow of Henry Nichols. Jack appears in the 1900 census for Randolph Co., GA with wife Martha & two boarders.

3. Charles J. JERNIGAN was born about 1833 in GA. Could be the Charles J. Jernigan who was killed in the Civil War on 30 Apr 1862, Co. H, 55 Reg. GA Inf. He was married to Louiza RIGSBY on 15 Jun 1857 in Randolph Co., GA.

4. Cynthia JERNIGAN was born about 1834 in GA. She was married to Samuel RIGSBY on 3 Jul 1851 in Randolph Co., GA.

5. John JERNIGAN was born about 1836 in GA. He was married to Rebecca STRICKLAND on 30 Jan 1862 in Randolph Co., GA.

THIRD GENERATION

6. Sarah Ann K. "Annie" JERNIGAN was born about 1852 in GA. She was married to Edwin Brandford TABB on 26 Jan 1876 in Baker Co., GA. Edwin Brandford TABB was born on 19 May 1859 in Baker Co., GA. He died in 1906 in Tyler Co., TX. Edwin was the son of Samuel Langhorne (Lang) Tabb b. in 1812 in NC and d. 1884 in Miller Co., GA. Sarah Ann K. "Annie" JERNIGAN and Edwin Brandford TABB had the following children:

    13    i.    Edgar TABB.
14    ii.   Lucy Elizabeth "Lula" TABB.
15    iii.  Richard Stephens "Jack" TABB.

Mr. and Mrs. Tabb lived in Albany, GA at the time of her sister Zennie's death about 1936.

Information from Baker Co. History by Henry Poole: Edwin Tabb and Annie K. Jernigan relocated to Tyler Co., TX along with his sister, Maranda Cora Tabb and her husband Eli B. Jackson.

Note: There is a Randolph Co., GA marriage record for Ann Jernigan to J. J. Cooper on May 28, 1877. We are not sure who this would be.

7. Zennie Arkansas "Kansas" JERNIGAN was born about 1854 in Edison, Calhoun Co., GA. Tombstone says birth year was 1856. She died on 17 Jan 1936 in Randolph Co., GA. According to her granddaughter, Lucille Culbreth Shaw, Kansas suffered from "the wasting sickness" (cancer) for much of her life. She was buried in Carnegie Baptist Cemetery, Randolph Co., GA. (The obituary for Zennie "Kansas" Jernigan Culbreth was printed in Vol. 38 of the Jernigan Home Page.)

She was married to James Monroe "Jim" CULBRETH on 15 Dec 1870. James Monroe "Jim" CULBRETH was born on 17 Dec 1849 in Edison, Calhoun Co., GA. Tombstone says birth year was 1851. He died on 7 Jul 1931 in Randolph Co., GA. He was buried in Carnegie Baptist Cemetery, Randolph Co., GA. Jim was the son of Alexander Culbreth (1820-1896) and Mary Ivey (1826-1900). His sister, Frances Bartow Culbreth, married John Alexander Jernigan, son of Blake Washington Jernigan.

Zennie Arkansas "Kansas" JERNIGAN and James Monroe "Jim" CULBRETH had the following children:

    16    i.    James "Jim" CULBRETH.
17    ii.    Stephen A. "Dock" or "Doc" CULBRETH. S. A. Culbreth lived in Edison, GA at the time of his mother's death about 1936.
    +18    iii.    Elizabeth "Lizzie" CULBRETH.
    +19    iv.    Millie "Pink"? CULBRETH.
20    v.    William Thomas "Bill" CULBRETH. W. T. Culbreth lived in Carnegie, GA at the time of his mother's death about 1936.
+21    vi.    Charles Jackson "Jack" CULBRETH. (Click to see picture of Charles J. and Alice (Nichols) Culbreth, probably either shortly after or at the time of their marriage.)

    22    vii.    Annie CULBRETH.
    23    viii.    Herman CULBRETH.
    24    ix.    Minnie CULBRETH.

After her husband's death, Kansas continued to work the farm and raise many children, including her nephew, William "Willie" E. Jernigan, 6 of whom were living at her death. 13 children were listed in her obit, one being W. E. Jernigan, who was actually her nephew whom she raised after his mother died.

From the Cemeteries of Randolph County Georgia, by Southwest Georgia Genealogical Society, 1993, there is listed in the Carnegie Baptist Cemetery on page 49:

Mrs. J. M. Culbreth        J. M. Culbreth
B. 1856                            B. 1851
D. 1936                            D. 1931

The 1851 tombstone date is probably wrong.

9. Cynthia JERNIGAN was born between 1859/1860 in GA. She was married to William Norwood LITTLE. (However, the obit for Cynthia's sister, Zennie, gives Cynthia's name as Mrs. T. N. Little.) Cynthia JERNIGAN and William Norwood LITTLE had the following children:

    +25    i.    Katie LITTLE.
    +26    ii.    Daisy Mae LITTLE.

Mr. and Mrs. Little lived in Edison, GA at the time of her sister Zennie's death about 1936.

10. Albert Riley JERNIGAN Sr. was born on 17 Oct 1861 in GA. He died on 31 Oct 1893 in Randolph Co., GA. He was buried in Pleasant Hill Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Carnegie, Randolph Co., GA. There's a possibility that his first name may have been Aubrey rather than Albert.

He was married to Willie Eugenia SNOW on 15 Jun 1884 in Randolph Co., GA. Willie Eugenia SNOW was born on 7 Feb 1862. She died on 5 Sep 1890. She was buried in Pleasant Hill Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Carnegie, Randolph Co., GA. She was the daughter of James P. Snow, who is also buried in the Pleasant Hill Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Carnegie, Randolph Co., GA. Willie Eugenia is the sister of Callie Snow, who married Albert Riley Jernigan's brother, James F. Jernigan. Albert Riley JERNIGAN Sr. and Willie Eugenia SNOW had the following children:

+27    i.    William Eugene "Willie" JERNIGAN.
    +28    ii.    Jeanette JERNIGAN.
    29    iii.    Stephen J. JERNIGAN.
30    iv.    Albert Riley JERNIGAN Jr..

12. James F. "Jim" JERNIGAN was born in Dec 1868 in GA. He died in 1915 in Damascus, Early Co., GA. A 1915 Cuthbert paper says that James F. died of typhoid fever in Damascus, where he had lived in his last years, but was brought back to Carnegie for burial on a Sunday afternoon. There is no marker for him.

He was married to Callie H. SNOW on 23 Nov 1890. Callie H. SNOW was born about 1874 in GA. She was the daugher of James P. Snow, who is buried in the Pleasant Hill Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Carnegie, Randolph Co., GA. Callie and Willie Eugenia Snow were sisters; they married brothers James F. Jerngian and Albert/Aubrey Riley Jernigan, respecitvely.

James F. "Jim" JERNIGAN and Callie H. SNOW had the following children:

    +31    i.    Ruby T. JERNIGAN.
    +32    ii.    Bonnie Beatrice JERNIGAN.
+33    iii.    Catherine C. "Kate" JERNIGAN.
34    iv.    James Roy JERNIGAN was born on 28 Oct 1899. He died on 6 May 1901. He was buried in Pleasant Hill Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Carnegie, Randolph Co., GA. Tombstone says "s/o J. F. & C. H. Jernigan"
    +35    v.    Claudia A. JERNIGAN.
+36    vi.    Alma E. "Lucy" JERNIGAN.
+37    vii.    Annie Snow "Merle" JERNIGAN.
    +38    viii.    Frank JERNIGAN.

Stories passed down through the family says that James F.'s death of typhoid in 1915 left Callie in shaky circumstances. Her daughter Ruby played the piano and, as their assets dwindled, the family used the piano (a baby grand) as a dining table in order to keep it. Callie's daughter Bonnie and her husband Jack Arrington moved to Perry, FL following the lumber mill work, and that is how Callie and her two youngest children, Merle and Frank, ended up in Florida. The six girls in the family, although scattered between AL and FL, took good care of their mother.

In the 1920 Decatur Co., GA census, Callie Jernigan is enumerated in the W. A. McDowell household, age 46, b. GA. This would be the household of Callie's daughter and son-in-law, W. A. and Ruby Jernigan McDowell. Also in the household was Meryl Jernigan, age 11 b. GA, and Frank Jernigan, age 7 b. GA.

Inquiries

Carlene Leatherwood is searching for any information on Cornelius WINGATE. She writes "I have seen a connection to Susannah JERNIGAN married to Cornelius WINGATE. Our Cornelius was born in 1804, South Carolina. Cornelius died in Attala County, Miss. in 1885. I have also noticed some of the JERNIGANS in Noxubee County, Miss. Our Cornelius was also in Noxubee County. We have his descendents by 2 marriages. The first marriage was to an unknown, believed to be from Ireland. The second was to Elmira Haynes. She was married first to Phelps Haynes. Cornelius apparently raised her children also. Any help will be so appreciated."

Linda Rogers Curtis and Judith Jernigan Oldham are your contacts for the Coffee County, Tennessee Jernigan Cemetery Association Formation Meeting. Here are the details on the meeting:  Descendants of Alexander C. Jernigan of Johnston County, North Carolina and Coffee County Tennessee are planning a Cemetery Association Formation Meeting for the first weekend of May, 2000. The purpose of the get together will include work on repairing/restoring the deteriorated Jernigan Cemetery across from the original Alexander C. Jernigan home site. Plans for the meeting include the formation of a Cemetery Association, for those interested, to continue a degree of maintenance of the cemetery. The meeting will also include an opportunity to exchange and share information, and to perhaps plan a more extensive Middle Tennessee Area Jernigan Reunion. The original Alexander C. Jernigan home site is the property and home site so beautiful described by Varna Thompson Jernigan in her book, "Leaves of the Jernigan Tree".

The meeting will be held at the Civil War Confederate Cemetery off exit I 24, Gossburg, Coffee County, Tennessee, Saturday, 9:00 AM.

Please wear working and hiking clothes/shoes and bring garden/repair tools, and cleaning supplies, if you have them. Mostly, your presence, willingness, labor and Jernigan family information will be greatly appreciated!

We plan a pot luck picnic on Saturday and Sunday for lunch.

Linda has located the grave sites of Needham Jernigan ( (son of Alexander) and Mary "Polly" Jernigan (daughter of Lewis Jernigan) . She and her husband have visited the Alexander C. Jernigan home site and discovered the Jernigan cemetery. They has also discovered some very interesting history regarding the Jernigan land in this area. The surrounding area, she reports, is beautiful and full of history. We hope to locate the nearby grave sites of Alexander C. Jernigan and Elizabeth Farmer Jernigan.

Linda and Judith will supply you with directions, maps, and information regarding the Jernigan Cemetery and the Civil War Confederate Cemetery, and the meeting. Please contact them regarding your interest and participation.

Editor's Note

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!  Wow, a fresh new century.  Let's make it worthy of our Lord and Savior!

I decided that I would chance the highly overrated Y2K bug and put the page up today as usual.  It was a good choice considering that I just rolled into town from SC at 4:00am on New Year's Eve and I hadn't even started putting this homepage together yet!  Perhaps I should make that organizational resolution again this year...

You may have noticed that there are two links to pictures on this edition.  I have more space now, so if you would like to have pictures of your family on the homepages, or if you have a picture that you hope someone else will recognize because you don't, email them to me or mail them to me and I'll put them on future editions.

The homepage will move as of the next issue!  I am keeping my Aol account for a little while yet and a "We have moved, click here" button will remain at the old address until then just in case.  But if you are on my mailing list, you will have no problems finding the new site.  Just wanted to give you a little advance warning!

We spent our Christmas from here to SC and back here and still have more to come!  We opened most of our gifts here around our tree before leaving for SC on the Thursday before Christmas.  Krystal decided that she wanted to wait until after we returned "because it wasn't Christmas yet" to open her gifts.  So Ed and I left a couple of presents under the tree that were ours so she wouldn't have to open gifts alone when we came back.

Then it was off to SC with the three girls, the dog and Ed.  We left at 5:30pm ( a highly delayed departure time as we wanted to leave no later than 1:00pm)  and arrived in SC at 4:30am on Christmas Eve. (Perhaps timing should be another resolution I should consider...)  After taking a very long nap, we had a great dinner, got all of the presents under the tree, went to church and returned home to sleep while Santa did his magic.

Christmas morning we spent with my family opening gifts, then the rest of the day eating, spending time with relatives and just having a great time.

Sunday was Christmas with Ed's family.  We spent the day again, opening gifts, eating, spending time with relatives and just having a great time.

After all of that, we took Monday through Wednesday to do some packing for our final move which will be sometime in the next couple of months, weather permitting.

Thursday, we headed back up to PA via our nation's capital, Washington, DC where we stopped long enough in the evening to gaze at the National Christmas tree, decorated by GE with 10,000 lights and surrounded by smaller trees from each state and territory.  As if that wasn't impressive enough, we also saw the "Millennium Tree" (yes, I know the millennium doesn't start until next year) which was from the state of Wisconsin and stood 70 feet high with 70,000 lights in addition to handmade ornaments from all over Wisconsin.  It was quite beautiful and I couldn't quite keep from wondering what they do with all of those ornaments after the holidays as I saw a number of them that I would have liked to add to my Santa collection!

After Washington, we headed to a friend's house in Baltimore for a short visit before starting the final leg home, arriving in our driveway at 4:00am on New Year's Eve. (Do we see a pattern here?)  Once again it was off to bed to get some much needed sleep and then we arose to open the final round of gifts under the tree.

Now you might think that this is enough, but we still have more gifts on the way from my brother's family who trekked from Texas to Richmond, Virginia for Christmas with his wife's family this year.  As they have baby Mathew as well as bigger brother Benjamin, in addition to just moving into a new house, they are sending our gifts when they get back home.  (After all, there are only so many hours in a day, and not enough when you have little ones running around amongst the boxes in your new house!)

All in all, we had a wonderful Christmas with our families.  And the Christmas tree was still standing when we got back home, despite the fact that we left our two cats, Sneakers and Tigger home alone for a week! (Wonder what they do while we are gone...)

New Year's was spent with yet another branch of the family as we went to the farm.  Ed's cousins were there and we played games and watched TV until midnight.  Amazing how uneventful the arrival of the year 2000 after all the doomsday predictions we've had over the past year or more!  Today we have basically spent together with the kids, watching TV and having our traditional roast pork and hoppin' john feast.  If the rest of the year is this quiet and peaceful, it will be a blessing and maybe I can get organized and perfect my timing!  We'll see...

Until then... Happy Hunting!

Marla Boots
