Marion County GA Bio Warren Oliver Perry File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by
Linda Johnson
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/marion/bios/perry.txt
There has been focus the last week on the children of William PERRY of Meriwether County, GA and his children. Little is known about his last son,
Warren Oliver PERRY. I have information here on him.
1. Warren Oliver PERRY born 1835 in Meriwether Co, GA, married first Missouri Antanet JERNIGAN (20 July 1836 - 7Nov 1857) in Marion Co, GA , 4 Feb 1852.
She was the daughter of Ptolemy Jernigan (1795-1868) and Sarah L.Jarrell (1801- after 1870 census) of Marion Co. Missouri was the sister of Mary E.
JERNIGAN, who had married Warren's brother James G. PERRY 4 Feb 1851. The reason Warren and James G. were in Marion Co was because James G. owned land
there.
2. The next information on Warren Oliver is in the Meriwether 1860 census. It lists: Warren O. 32, Julia C. *19, William P. 5, M. A.** 3 (F), John W. 2.
Notice that the wife is "Julia C." She is Julia Caroline CLAYTON of Meriwether Co., who married Warren on 8 Dec 1857, only one month and one day
after the death of Missouri Antanet JERNIGAN. This means then that "William P." and "M.A." are children of Missouri Antanet JERNIGAN of Marion Co. This
leaves one more question: who is the female "M. A."? I will attempt to prove that later in this message.
3. The next documentation on Warren appears in Columbia County, AR by Dec 1860 where it discussed his guardianship of a child. Either James G. or Henry
P. had purchased land in Columbia Co. also by that date. I have not been able to locate any deeds that prove Warren purchased land in AR.
4. As to the time of Warren's death, it is unclear but it is known that he
died in the Civil War. There is one-half page dated 16th January 1866 of probate records in Columbia Co, AR which states that the value of Warren O.
Perry's estate was less than $300 and no further proceedings were necessary. It lists his wife as Julia C. Perry, but does not list children.
5. I have not been able to locate any guardianship papers in Columbia,
Meriwether, or Marion Counties.
6. On the 1870 Meriwether census, Julia C. Perry and son John W. are living back in GA with relatives. However, on the 1870 Marion Co, GA census William
P. and Nettye Clay** Perry are living with Sarah Jernigan, Missouri Antanet's mother.
7. "William P." is William Ptolemy Perry who, according to his death certificate, was born in Meriwether Co, GA.on 29 Nov 1853 to Warren Oliver
Perry and Missouri Antenet Jernigan. He died 21 June 1938 in Stephens, Ouachita Co., AR. It states that he had retired from farming in 1904 and had
farmed for 38 years. His wife at the time was Martha E. Perry of Stephens. (I have personally researched Perrys in that county and learned that this was
his second wife.) He is buried in Mt. Prospect Cemetery in Ouachita Co., AR. On the 1880 Marion County census, house number 250, he was married to a
"Lula" who was 21. I have not been able to identify any children for "Toll" as he was called. Notice again that his maternal grandfather was "Ptolemy"
Jernigan.
8. In referring to the 1860 Meriwether Co. census, notice that the female's initials were "M. A." I have considered several theories from many
genealogists. One is that the enumerator thought the female was named after her mother or confused Nettye Clay with her mother's name. Another theory is
that the female's full name is "Missouri Antanet Nettye Clay" or that
"Nettye" is a form of the name "Antanet." I may never learn the reason for writing "M. A." on the 1860 census. Also, she was living with William
Ptolemy Perry and Sarah Jernigan in 1870. I believe I have proof who she is.
9. Nettye Clay Perry is my great-grandmother. It has been stated by my father that "Toll" was her brother when the family visited him in AR before he died.
I have pictures of Nettye Clay and her husband which were made in Stephens, AR. Her death certificate in Hunt Co, TX states the following: Mrs. Nettie
White (she had remarried after the death of Samuel Pierce JOHNSON). Date of birth: 15 October 1856, birthplace: GA, father: Warren Perry. Death date: 24
Nov 1914. (This birthdate would correspond with census dates.)
10. Additional information on Nettye Clay Perry: Married Samuel Pierce JOHNSON when she was 14 years old (based on what she told a grandchild and
based on the first born it looks probable). This would have been 1870 or 1871. I have not been able to find any marriage records in Marion,
Meriwether, Schley (where Samuel Pierce lived) or any of the other area GA counties. Samuel Pierce Johnson was born in Marion Co. but his family lived
in Schley County part of 20 years. His parents were George Washington Johnson and Elizabeth HART, originally of Warren Co., GA.
11. Nettye Clay Perry and Samuel Pierce JOHNSON's children: James William -stayed in Hunt Co, TX, Henry - stayed in Hunt Co, TX, George Washington -
went to Wichita Falls, TX, Mattye Lou - married Earnest Haney in Hunt Co.
12. The family moved from Marion Co, GA in 1887 and settled in the far northeast part of Hunt Co, TX where Samuel Pierce died in 1890. Additional
information: Warren Oliver Perry of Meriwether Co who married Missouri Antanet Jernigan of Marion Co. Their son William Ptolemy, who grew up in
Marion Co., married Talula Johnson. The two moved to Ouachita Co., AR. This attachment includes information taken from her death certificate. Warren
Oliver PERRY, last son of William Perry, of Meriwether Co, GA married 4 February 1852 Missouri Antanet JERNIGAN of Marion Co, GA. They had two
children while living in Meriwether Co: William Ptolemy PERRY born 29 November 1853, and Nettye Clay PERRY born 15 October 1856. Missouri Antanet
died November 1856. Warren Oliver then married a CLAYTON in Meriwether in December of 1856. By 1862 the family was in Columbia Co., AR. Warren Oliver
PERRY died in the Civil War. By 1870, William Ptolemy, aka "Toll" or "Tolly", and Nettye Clay PERRY were living with their JERNIGAN grandparents
in Marion Co, GA. By 1880 William Ptolemy Perry was married to "Talula" in Marion Co, GA and Nettye Clay PERRY was married to Samuel Pierce JOHNSON, son
of George Washington JOHNSON of Warren Co., GA>Marion Co. & Schley Co., GA. (At this time I have not found marriages for either in Meriwether, Marion, or
Schley Co.) Below is information from the death certificate for William Ptolemy PERRY's wife
"Talula":

Horry Co., SC Jernigans
The following information on the Jernigans of Horry Co., SC comes from a combination of information submitted by
Anne Louise Jernigan Harkins; her uncle Oree Fisher of Kinston, NC; and census look-ups
by Kay Stone.
Anne Louise Jernigan Harkins "Lou" is the oldest daughter of Charles Edmonson Jernigan and Ruby Fisher. Charles E. was born 1900 in Green Sea, Horry Co.,
SC and died between 1956/1957 in Philadelphia, PA. He served in World War I. Ruby Fisher, the daughter of Ernest C. Fisher of Tabor City, NC and Lula
Wright, was born Nov. 7, 1918 in Tabor City and died Oct. 22, 1950 in Whiteville, NC.
Ruby was the second wife of Charles. Charles and his first wife had six children; Charles and Ruby had six sons and two daughters. After Ruby died,
her eight children were raised in an orphanage in NC.
The parents of Charles Edmonson were Emory W. Jernigan b. 1859 NC, d. 1928; and Anna Hooks b. July 1877 SC, d. after 1928. Emory was also married twice. His first wife was Mattie A. ____, who d. Sept. 28, 1895. Emory W. and Anna
H. Jernigan were in Horry Co., SC for the 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920 census. Their children, all born in SC, were: Charley b. 1900 (see above), May b.
1903, Freddie b. 1905, Gussie b. 1907, Allard b. 1909, Edgar b. 1912, Elbert b. 1914, Paul b. 1916, Janie b. 1918.
An examination of census records enables us to go back one generation further:
1860 Bradford Co., FL census:
Wilson D. b c1823 NC
Sarah b. c1835 SC (still living in the 1900 census)
David age 28 (probable brother)
Lucy b. 1853 NC
Mary b. 1855 NC
Alexander b. 1854 NC
Martha b. 1856 NC
Emery b. 1859 NC
There was also apparently another brother named Sandy M. Jernigan, since Emory W. was living with Sandy, their mother, and a sister in the 1880 Horry
Co. census.
Finally, we can refer to the "Jernigan Reunion" book by Lillian Worley, and the second edition of this book by Kay Stone, for the probable parents of
Wilson Jernigan. From pg. 184 of the second edition:
"We have reason to believe that Charles JERNIGAN of Columbus Co., NC, was either a son or grandson of Jesse Jernigan, who moved from Wayne Co. to
Robeson and then on into Horry District in SC. Jesse was listed in the 1790 Robeson Co. census with 1 male over 16 including himself; 4 white males under
16; 2 white females and 6 slaves. By 1805 he was in Horry Co., SC, when he sold land in Robeson Co., NC, witnessed by Willis Jernigan, Robeson Co.
Deeds, Vol O, p 25. (Willis could have been a son of Jesse or possibly a
brother.)
"Jesse Jernigan married Lucy HOLMES, daughter of Charles Holmes of Wayne Co., NC, so we think the name Charles came from the Holmes family since we cannot
find another Jernigan by that name during that era. Charles was living in Columbus Co., NC in 1850. At that time he listed his age as 60 years old and
born in SC. He married Sarah COLEMAN, the daughter of Theophilus Coleman. Their children were:
1. Andrew Jernigan
2. David Jernigan
3. Wilson Jernigan
4. Martha Jernigan
5. Margaret (Avy) Jernigan
6. Willis Jernigan"
Many members of this family were buried in the Green Sea Cemetery in Horry Co. See Vol. XXXII of the Jernigan Home Page, dated May 2, 1999, for a
listing of Jernigan burials in Horry Co.
Thus, by pooling our resources we now have six generations of Jernigans for this family, beginning with Jesse Jernigan of 1790 Robeson Co. NC, then
Charles, Wilson D., Emery W., Charles Edmonson, and finally Lou Jernigan Harkins.
If you have further info on this family, please email Lou
or contact her through Oree Fisher, 906 Jefferson Dr., Kinston, NC.

Jernigan and Josey Connections
Barbara J.
Fowler and Sharon J. Tingley
Here's something interesting about William (Butler County, AL) & Emily Sharp
Jernigan's descendants. They had a daughter named Emily Frances Jernigan who married Thomas Jefferson Josey. William and Emily Sharp Jernigan also had a
son, William, who married Thomas Jefferson Josey's sister, Martha J. Josey. (The only child I have for them in my database is William Thomas b. 1868 in
AL.)
Emily & Thomas Josey had 12 children. After Emily's death the family moved to Robertson, Texas. Two of the children of Emily and Thomas Josey married
Jernigans in Texas. Thomas Richardson Josey who m. Annie Elizabeth Jernigan; and Laura Josey who m. Charles Edgar Jernigan. Annie Eliz. Jernigan was b.
Sep 1869 in Butler Co., AL. Charles Edgar Jernigan was b. abt 1868 in AL. Note that Charles Edgar and Annie Elizabeth Jernigan were both born in
Alabama at about the same time and place as the Josey children.
Could Charles Edgar and Annie Elizabeth Jernigan be the children of William Jernigan and Martha J. Josey? Did William and Martha J. Josey also relocate
to Texas? What about some feedback from you Texans!
We never have determined who Charles Edgar and Annie Eliz. Jernigan were but it is interesting to note that they were b. in AL also. My thoughts are that
they might be children of Martha Josey and William Jernigan. I only have one child for Martha Josey and Wm. Jernigan, William Thomas Jernigan but these
other two could be theirs.

Descendants of Missouri Antenet Jernigan
contributed by Linda Johnson
The daughter of Ptolomy and Sarah Jarrell Jernigan of Marion County, GA,
Missouri Antenet was born 20 July 1836. She married Warren Oliver Perry 5 Feb. 1853 in Marion County. Her older sister Mary, had married James G.
Perry, brother of Warren Oliver Perry, the year before. The young couple lived in Merriwether County and had two children while living there: William
Ptolomy Perry (called Toll or Tolly)), born 29 November 1853 and Missouri Antanet Clay Perry (called Nettye Clay) born 15 October 1856. Missouri
Antanet Jernigan Perry died 7 November 1856 leaving a baby less than one month old. On December 8.1856, Warren Oliver Perry married Julia Caroline
Clayton of Merriwether.
By 1862 Warren Oliver Perry and Julia were in Columbia Co., AR and had a son, John W Perry born in 1858. Warren Oliver Perry was killed in the War Between
The States and Julia and her son returned to GA and on the 1870 census they were living with her family. The two children of Missouri Antanet Jernigan
are living with Sarah Jarrell Jernigan.
William Ptolomy Perry died 21 June 1938 in Stephen, Ouachita Co., AR. He was retired from farming in 1904 and had farmed for 38 years. His wife at the
time of his death was Martha E. and she was his second wife. On the 1880 census in Marion Co., GA, his wife was "Lula" (Talula Johnson). No children
for Toll have been identified.
Nettye Clay Perry is the great grandmother of Linda Johnson. Nettye Clay told a grandchild that she married Samuel Pierce Johnson when she was 14
years old. That would have been c 1870, although no marriage record has been found in Marion, Meriwether, or Schley counties in GA. Samuel Pierce Johnson
was born in Marion but his family lived in Schley for about 20 years. Nettye Clay and Samuel P. Johnson moved from Marion Co., GA to Hunt Co., TX in 1887. Their children were James William Johnson who remained in Hunt Co., TX,
George Washington Perry who went to Wichita Falls, TX and Mattye Lou who
married Earnest Haney in Hunt Co, TX. Samuel died in 1890 and Nettye Clay remarried to a Mr. White. She died in Hunt on 24 Nov. 1914.

Cheryl and Paul Jernigan discovered the following:
This was dated:1868 bridge disaster: From the Fort Gains Chatahoochee Mirror extra we extract the following particulars relating to the late terrible bridge disaster. About 30 hands were employed on the bridge-many were working underneath-and a large number of spectators were also on the bridge at the time it fell. All went down together, from an altitude of about 80 ft. Among the killed and wounded we could learn only the names of the following killed, John C. Hill. sheriff of Clay county, Hooker Stevens missing and supposedly dead, James Middleton, Colored, and Jerry Sutton: wounded mortally, William A Jackson, JL Peters, Robert Brown, Andrew Newsome colored: wounded slightly, Wm Waldon, W. H. Jernigan, W.G. Jernigan and WM Mount.

John Jernigan writes: I am John William Jernigan. My family lives in Leander TX, outside of Austin. We moved here from Kansas about 16 years ago. My Great Grandfather was Elbert Jernigan, his wife Minnie. They lived in Charlotte, AR outside of Batesville. My Great Aunt Vela still lives in Batesville. Does anyone have, or can you tell me where to find, more of my family's history. Dad said that our Great Great Grandfather was an Arkansas State Representative. My Dad's cousin is John Tucker Jernigan, a Federal Judge in Little Rock. I don't know if any of this is helpful, but I'd like more information.

Jennie Fernandez writes: My Grandmother's name is Essie May Jernigan, She married Charles Dunavan, I don't know the date but probably in the '30's sometime. Then after he died she married Leonard Paul Kremske and they moved to Tucson, Arizona. She had some children with Charles and one with Leonard. Is this enough information to get me anywhere?

Candi writes: I am looking for a "Lake Jernigan" who married a Benjamin Franklin Cherry. Tennessee area. Or, does anyone have any connections between a Jernigan and Cherry family around Hardin county Tennessee or Benton and Decatur? Also, were some Jernigan's Cherokee Indian? (Editor's note: Yes there is Cherokee blood in the Jernigan line. I have had several people tell me this, but I don't remember exactly who. Can anyone help clarify this?)

Geneen N. Johnson
has the following question:
I am wondering if the Johnakins were African American or biracial. I am related to a set of Johnakins who were from Marlboro County South Carolina
about the turn of the century (1899-1900). The name Milby, Evander and Anson seemed to be names that ran in these families. I know there is a
connection between Jernigan and Johnakin because on the 1900 census for Marlboro County my Great-Great Grandmother Tommie Jane Johnakin McCrae had
another woman named Emily Jurnigan living in the house. The variation seems to run in African-American families as well. Some indication that the
Johnakins were mixed with either native american or Irish ancestry. Tommie Jane looked white. If you have any information, please email me.

Editor's Note
March! The month of my birthday and this year I'll be turning the big 40! Not that it bothers me at all, I'd rather age than choose the other option! So happy birthday to me and all the other Jernigans celebrating birthdays this month!
College acceptance letters have arrived at the Boots household. Kim was accepted at Messiah College in Grantham, PA (near Harrisburg), which was a relief as it was the only college to which she applied saying, "If I can't go there, I don't want to go to college". They have given her a four year, $3500 a year scholarship and she has the chance at one of four full tuition scholarships for 4 years as well! We are crossing our fingers for that! Krystal has been accepted at Belmont University in Nashville, TN with the offer of a four year, $4000 a year scholarship. She is still waiting to hear from Vanderbilt and Furman before she makes her final choice.
We have been "enjoying" a late winter storm season around here for the past week. We still have the promise of more snow over the next few days, then I hope that it will warm up. Not that I can complain because it has actually been a very mild winter here this year.
This is a short editor's note as it is getting late and I'm wanting to get this edition on the web before I miss March 1st in all the US time zones!
I wish you all a great Easter! And also may the luck of the Irish be upon you as you go seeking your roots!
Until then, ...Happy hunting!
