Lindy Hard is searching for "Katie" Pate, a d/o Samuel Pate of Twiggs Co Ga and the search has lead her to believe that she might have married to a Cannon 1st and then to J J Jernigan as Elizabeth Cannon in the 1851 Randolph Co GA marriage. This is unproven at this point!

John Ben Pate printed a history of the Pate family in 1917 in which he stated that Katie married a Jernigan.

The 1850 Census of Twiggs Co Ga has Elizabeth Pate, widow of Samuel Pate, as head of the household, and living with the family is a James Cannon, age 23. "Katie" is not listed with the household, but could have been left off.

Katie's brother Stephen S Pate moved to Stewart Co Ga and on to Randolph County where he married Margaret McKinnon. The 1860 Agriculture census has J J Jernigan 3 lines down from S S Pate. Also J J Jernigan & Katie name a child b 1866 Stephen. Stephen S Pate died 1863 in the War Between the States.

Katie also had a brother Joseph Pate who was living in Early county GA in 1850. I notice that the Blake W Jernigan who is buried in the Randolph Co GA Jernigan cemetery is the s/o Hardy Jernigan of Early Co Ga.

Also, a friend has seen in the LDS records recently that Catherine Elizabeth Pate, b 12 Aug 1829 married Joseph Jackson Jernigan. Of course, this LDS record offers no further info on the marriage, so I don't know where that came from.

Here are some more bits & pieces I have collected while trying to figure out this mystery.

J J Jernigan m Mrs. Martha J Nichols 17 July 1898 Randolph Co GA, Bk 7,146 [I noticed your comments about the questions as to whom this actually is. One Henry T Nichols was married 1st to Elizabeth McKinnon, a sister to Margaret McKinnon Pate. Elizabeth died in 1874. He may have remarried afterwards to Mrs. Rachel J Polleck.]

The following delegates were elected Sat last to meet at the convention in Cuthbert tomorrow to nominate a candidate for Representative. 6th. J. J. Jernigan, Tobe Watson, Wm. Stevens and Henry Weathersby [Katie Pate's mother was supposedly a Weathersby, although this has not been proven.]

Stephen S Pate & Margaret McKinnon Pate named their youngest son b 27 Oct 1860 Jackson LaFayette Pate. He married Mattie Snow abt 1886 [exact date/place unknown.]

Lindy would love to hear what anyone thinks about this. Thanks for any help that you can give her.

Inquiries

John Pressey writes, "I am looking for Francis "Frank" Sherman Journigan. He should be about 55-59 years old now. He lived in or near Mount Holly, NJ in 1968. I believe that he was from North or South Carolina originally, I am leaning toward Raleigh, North Carolina Area (hunch).  He has a brother named Robert who has a son named Bobby. He also has an older brother whose name I do not know. This brother owned a landscaping business in or near Bordentown, NJ, at that time. Frank was a meat cutter for a store called Acme Foods in Trenton, NJ. I know that this is not much to go on, but if you can help, let me know."

Okbiochick@aol.com is seeking info on the following line. She writes: "I've just recently begun researching my family history and am having a really hard time getting any information about my father's side. My grandfather's name was Lloyd Horace Jernigan (b.1915 d.1996). Unfortunately he passed before I found an interest in my family history. All I really have to go on is his father's name Therston Jernigan and his mother Sara West. He also has a brother named Edward and step siblings. Sara West married into the Sorrell family after Therston died. I would really appreciate any info. Thanks!"

Barbara Mclean has the following inquiry:

I have a photo (courtesy of Mary Shellaby ) of JD and Della Tomlinson in TX about 1890. It was found in the family photo's of Henry Jernigan from Edwards Co., TX. Is anyone familiar with the name Tomlinson in connection with the Jernigans in the 1800's. I wonder if he might have been the son-in-law of Lucy Ann Jernigan. Any info on JD Tomlinson born about 1852 in Georgia ? died in TX would be appreciated.

Editor's Note

Happy New Year!  This month, I have to call this the Ed Boots edition!  My one and only New Year's resolution (I'm trying to simplify my life.) is to get the Jernigan Homepage out on the first of the month every month this year.  I woke up today to discover that my computer was dead!  So I figured this edition was not going to make it, thus the whole concept of the resolution was defunct!  But my wonderful husband tore my computer apart, found out that my power supply had died and robbed one out of another computer we had here and voila!, my computer was working again!  So he is my hero, yet again!!!!

Christmas was a family filled event around here.  We ended up having 10 people in the house - my parents, Ed's parents, my sister, our three children, and Ed and I.  Despite the possibilities, everything ran quite well!  We only ended up with 16 for Christmas dinner and as the dishwasher didn't get picked out in time, (I was a little busy getting ready for Christmas and ran out of time for dishwasher shopping.) everyone seemed just as happy eating off of Chinette instead of china.

Quite frankly getting everything ready for Christmas this year was another miracle in my book!  I thought that I was so far ahead, but somehow, I got behind.  Of course the fact that the Christmas tree, just finished being decorated and fully watered an hour before, decided that it was tired and needed to lie down, didn't help!  But after getting the small flood mopped up, the broken ornaments removed, and Krystal and I struggling to get it uprighted and leaning in a corner until Ed got home, Christmas preparations seemed to go much smoother!  We actually got everything finished with the exception of more outdoor decorating and some present wrapping before the relatives arrived.  The former just didn't seem to matter anymore and the latter was solved with the help of my mom, sister and mom-in-law helping one evening!

Surrounded by family, the only other thing desired was a white Christmas - which we got!  Everyone was delighted by the huge snowflakes drifting down and a few of the family braved the teen temperatures to play in it and to take pictures.

We went to three church services over the Christmas weekend - all special.  The first one on Saturday night was a play, narrated by our twins, Krystal and Kim.  Of course they did a wonderful job! Sunday morning the choir presented Handel's Messiah with a string quartet accompanying, and it was a beautiful concert.  Our twins were in the choir for that service as well.  The Christmas eve service was a candlelight service that is always moving.  It is quite amazing to see how much light can be spread by one single candle!  I hope that your Christmas was as blessed as our was!

Cyndi and her boyfriend, Tim have become engaged.  Tim is in the Air Force and is currently stationed in Charleston, SC. Cyndi will finish her Associates degree here at CCBC before moving down to SC.  They are planning to get married this summer in SC.

That means that this is going to be a hectic summer, June especially as that is the month that the twins will graduate high school, as well as the time that Cyndi and Tim are looking at getting married.

Tigger, our sick cat, is in much improved condition now.  He actually has an appetite, the parasite is gone, and he is rehydrated.  Now all we need to do is to get him fattened up again.  I really thought that he was a goner and this is nothing short of another miracle in my book!

I am aware that the first 20 editions of the Jernigan Homepage are not accessible.  I am going to work on getting them up and running as soon as I can.  If you need info from one of these editions, please contact me and I will send you the info that you are looking for as soon as I can. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I am still not able to get the monthly email out to aol users, but I think I may have come across a solution.  Let me know if it works this time around!

Thanks to all of you who have helped with the Jernigan Genealogy Homepage over the past years!  Keep the info coming and keep up the research! See you in February!

Until then, ...Happy hunting!

Marla Boots
