Barbara Fowler writes: The Daniel P. Jernigan b. 20 Feb.1920, whose obit was in the April Homepage is from the Moody Jernigan line. I was working on that line and found the tie in Jernigan and Cooper by Virginia Jernigan Sanders, pg 3. 

His parents:
Daniel Perry Jernigan , b. 20 Nov. 1888, m. in 1917 in Elba, AL to Lillie Irene Carmichael who was b. 4 Nov 1893. She died 9 March 1952. They lived in Geneva, AL. Had three children: 

1. John Leslie Jernigan, b. 10 April 1918: d. 11 July 1984. Married Rosemary O'Brian.
2. Daniel Perry Jernigan, Jr. , b. 17 Feb 1920.
3. Malcolm Louis Jernigan b. 28 Dec 1925. (He is still living, according to the obit.)

Daniel Perry Jernigan, Sr. was the son of John Lewis Jernigan , b. 8 Jan 1856, Married 31 Oct. 1884 to Cisley Jane Poole. John Lewis d. 8 April 1932.

John Lewis was the son of David W. Jernigan, first child of Moody and Martha/Patsie Milton Jernigan. David W. Jernigan was b. 12 August 1826 in Lumpkin, GA died 26 March 1903. He was married to Nancy Mahlaley Blackmon, daughter of Burl Blackmon, who lived in Dale County, AL.

Will of David Jernigan Sr. Wayne Co., NC

In the name of God Amen

I David Jernigan senr of the State of North Carolina and County of Wayne being very sick and weak in body but of a sound perfect mind and memory, thanks be to Almighty God for the same. Calling to mind the mortality of my body knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do constitute make and ordain this my last will and testament in the following manner and form. Principally and first of all I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it to me and my body I recommend to the Earth, to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named. Nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God; and as touching such worldly estate as it hath pleased God of his mercy to bless me with in this life.

I do give and dispose of the same in manner and form following.

Viz:

First, my will and desire is that all my just debts and funeral charges be cleared and discharged.

Item: I give and bequeath to my well beloved wife Alice Jernigan Thirty pounds specie to be at her own disposal And I lend to my said wife during her widowhood or life the use of the plantation whereon I now dwell with a all my houses and orchards thereon with all the rest of my lands and tenements on the North side of Neuse River to cut timber and rain stock on any part that suits her best. I also lend her during her widowhood the use of thirteen negroes Viz. Tom, Cezar, Cuffey, Hagar, Ned, Jin, Phillip, fann, Dick, Judea, Vilet, Sambo, and Galloway. And all my horses and mairs, two yoke of oxen, and twenty cows and calves and thirty head of dry cattle her choice of all my stock and all my sheep and hogs except four Eursand? Lambs and likewise all my working tools of all kinds with all my plows and hoes.

And all other plantation utensils of all kinds whatever and likewise all my

Casks of all sorts - and as much of my household furniture as she please to take herself - and after my wife’s widowhood or death my Cyder Casks of all kinds I give to my son Stephen Jernigan.

Item: I give and bequeath to my son David Jernigan all my lands and tenements on the South side of Neuse River except three hundred acres two hundred acres of which is held by deed from William Lee and the other hundred patented by myself to him and his heirs forever.

Item: I do give and bequeath to my son Stephen Jernigan all my lands and tenements on the North side of Neuse River and likewise three hundred acres on the South side including the plantation I purchased from William Lee and one? Hundred acres joining the same patented by myself and likewise ten cows and calves and four

Item: I give and bequeath to my son in law Solomon Herring the use of two negroes now in his possession Viz: Beck and Simon during his live and the rest of the rest of the increase of the said negro Beck I leave to be equally divided between my granddaughter Sally Herring and my grandson Stephen Herring when the said Sally Herring either marrys or arrives at twenty years of age and after the death of my son in law Solomon Herring the said Beck and Simon with all the rest of their increase of the said Beck I leave likewise to be equally divided between the said Sally Herring and Stephen Herring.

Item: I give and bequeath to my granddaughter Polly Harrison one likely young Negro to be taken out of my daughter Isabel Howells part of my estate whenever the same is divided. by my executors but in case the said Polly Harrison dies without an heir that then the said negro to belong to my daughter Isabel Howell and her heirs forever.

And all the rest of my Estate both real and personal that is not mentioned in this my last will and testament I leave to be equally divided after my decease amongst my six children Viz: David, Patty, Mary, Isabel, Alice, and Stephen by men chosen by my executors and after my wife’s widowhood or death my desire is that the negroes I have lent to her with all their increase and all the rest of my estate so lent I likewise leave to be equally divided amongst my said six children above mentioned.

Item: I do herby appoint my beloved wife Alice Jernigan and David Jernigan executor to this my last will and testament and I do hereby utterly revoke disannul and make void all and every other former will or wills here before by me made Ratifying and confirming that no other to be my last will and testament

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and fixed my seal this 28th day of January in the year of our lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty three signed sealed declared and pronounced by the testator as his last will and testament In presence of us who in his presence and the presence of each other have subscribed our names. I am looking for information on the family line of Elise Jonikin. She was my great grandmother. She is said to have had a mental prolbem. She fell from her high chair and landed on her head causing brain damage. Her father was reported to have been an English professor at Oxford University. She had my grandfather, out of wedlock, somewhere around Dodsonville, Ohio on July 31, 1912. He was raised in the early years of his life by an 
old bachelor, "Uncle Tom". As far as we know he was not a blood relative.Any help would be appreciated.

Chesley Pleasant Jarnigan b-1843 in Mo. Their daughter was Eula Jarnigan who married Wm. Henry McClellan and their son, Samuel Oscar McClellan was my granddad. Mary Sullivant was a full blood Cherokee, I was always told. Please if anyone can help contact Paula.

The Jernigan reunion in Dunn, NC is scheduled for May 5, 2002.  Bring a covered dish and prepare to enjoy good food and conversation with the Jernigan clan! All Jernigans are welcome to attend, no matter who you descend from!  I can vouch for the friendliness and fun of this gathering.  Don't miss it!  The reunion in Dunn, which is held at the Stoney Run Church, will be held at 12:30pm on Sunday. Stoney Run Church is on Hwy. 55E, 3 miles East of Dunn, NC.  This is a good opportunity for those of you who want to talk to Kay Stone as she goes every year.

Editor's Note

Is it summer yet?  I actually had to order heating oil this morning because it is still chilly here!  What a wacky summer!

Despite the cool temperatures, my peonies are blooming like crazy!  They smell soooo good and last beautifully as cut flowers.  I am enjoying them immensely.  We also have numerous other things blooming in the yard.  So Mother Nature's temperature tantrum isn't have much of an effect on the flowers!

We just got back from an awards ceremony at the twins' school.  They each received a pin for having a 3.4 or above!  

Cyndi is not sure she'll be able to go to Slippery Rock this fall. Apparently they have run out of dorm rooms which makes for a very long commute (and quite a slippery one during the winter.  Is that why they call it Slippery Rock?)  So she may be spending another year at home and at CCBC.  We'll have to wait and see.

Krystal is determined to visit Vanderbilt and a couple of other colleges in the Nashville area.  If I can work it out, I supposed we'll be visiting Tennessee sometime this summer.  If any of y'all live near there, let me know.  I could use a local to give me some good directions and tips!  She plans to major in childhood education.  

Kim is looking at a college in Florida as well as in North Dakota!  Talk about two extremes!!!!  She certainly hasn't made her mind up, but is looking into several options.  She is seeking a college that has a strong background in Missions as well as Accounting.  Who knows where she'll end up!

Cyndi is already out of school for the summer and the twins will be done on the 6th of June.  It will be interesting for them this summer as they are used to me being home.  But now that I'm working, they'll have to learn to cope!  I'm sure that they will adjust just fine.

We are celebrating the twins' birthday almost two weeks late.  We didn't have a free weekend until tomorrow.  So we've invited family and friends to our house for games and a bonfire cookout.  Of course, that was before we found out that rain is in the forecast.  So we may be grilling on the patio and cramming everyone in the house for board games instead of volleyball and croquet!  Pray for sunshine!!!!!

June birthdays in my family are my nephew, Matthew Dubis, on the 3rd and my father, Kevin Dubis, on the 16th.  Matthew will be 2 and Dad, well, he will be a year older than last year!  Hope both of you guys have a wonderful time!  Happy Birthday to the rest of you June Jernigans!!

The homepage is going to be off schedule next month.  (I know, what else is new!)  I'll be heading to SC for a 10 day vacation starting on the 29th of June and ending on the 8th of July.  So depending on how busy I am between now and then, the homepage will either be a few days early, or very late indeed!  Keep in mind to send me stuff for the next homepage early (or even now) if you want it in the July edition.  I'm going to do my best to get it up and running before I leave.

Don't forget Father's Day.  Give your dad an extra hug!  I know I wouldn't be the person I am today without the guidance and love of my Dad!  Thanks Dad!  You are the greatest!
