UNRAVELING THE MYSTERIES OF ASA JARNAGIN
Several researchers have been working together on Asa Jarnagin of Grainger Co., TN. Asa was b. abt 1790 in TN, the son of Noah and Mary (Russell) Jarnagin and the grandson of Capt. Thomas and Mary (Witt) Jarnagin. Although a lot of information has been uncovered about other descendants in this Jarnagin line, data on Asa has been skimpy at best. The following facts and "best guesses" about Asa have been compiled from the combined efforts of Carolyn Lambert, Sharon Tingley, and Carla Tate; along with the help of four Hines researchers: DeWayne Welborn, John Claffy, Linda Scott, and Bebe Cole.
The James Hines family lived close to the Noah Jarnagin family in Joppa Valley, and children of the two families intermarried. James Hines' daughter, Jane "Jenny" Hinds, was the first wife of Asa Jarnagin. Their marriage date has not been discovered. James Hines' son, William B. Hines, married Jemima Jarnagin (sister of Asa) on March 19, 1809. (See information and Family Group Sheet for William B. and Jemima Jarnagin Hines below.) Another daughter of James Hines was Martha "Patsy" Hines, who married Archibald Finley on March 19, 1824 in Grainger Co. Archibald and Patsy had a daughter named Jane Finley, b. abt 1829. After the death of her aunt, Jane "Jenny" Hines Jarnagin, Jane Finley became the second wife of Asa Jarnagin on Dec. 2, 1852 in Grainger Co. So not only did Asa have two wives named Jane, but they were aunt and niece to each other!
Note: It is estimated that Jenny Hines Jarnagin died sometime between June 2, 1850, the date of the 1850 Grainger Co. census enumeration, and Nov. 8, 1850, the date of Asa Jarnagin's deposition for a Bounty Land Grant.
Asa Jarnagin fought in the War of 1812 and one of our researchers, Carolyn Lambert, has sent for his military papers. Hopefully, they will provide us with new information about him. Asa's personal description at the time of enlistment is described as blue eyes, "fare hare", occupation farmer, age not known at time of enlistment. Asa received 160 acres of bounty land as a result of his service. On Nov. 8, 1850, at the age of 60, he stated that he was mustered into service at Knoxville, TN on Jan. 10, 1814 for 12 months. He was discharged at Ft. Montgomery, Louisiana Territory on Jan. 15, 1815.
In his father Noah's will, dated Jan. 1, 1836, Asa was given $50.00 to be paid two years after Noah's death. In a codicil dated Feb. 28, 1849, Noah changed his bequeath to Asa and gave him land instead. There are several deed transactions in the early 1850s in which Asa bought and sold land with his brothers, Chesley and Pascal.
Asa can be found on the 1830, 1840, and 1850 census records for Grainger Co. These records are confusing because the ages of the children don't always match up right. Asa doesn't even appear to be listed in his own household for the 1840 census, since there are no males in the home old enough to be him. However, it is estimated that Asa and Jenny Hines Jarnagin had at least four sons and five daughters.
After Asa's death in Grainger Co. on July 6, 1858, his widow Jane Finley Jarnagin applied for and received a widow's pension on Aug. 22, 1879. Jane was awarded a pension of $8.00 a month and was living at Tate Springs with one of Asa's brothers at the time. She can be found on the 1860 census and 1880 Grainger Co. census records, but has not been located in 1870. Jane Finley Jarnagin died Sept. 4, 1890 in Grainger Co., as was reported to the Pension Board by her son, Joseph Asa Jarnigan.
The researchers believe the following are some of the children of Asa and Jenny Hines Jarnagin:
1. Lavinia Jarnagin b. 1816 TN; m. James Robert McGoldrick March 15, 1834 Grainger Co. James McGoldrick d. Jan. 22, 1884 and Lavinia died between 1880 and 1900. They both died in Grainger Co.
2. William Richard Jarnigan b. Mar 1828 TN; m.1 Sarah Virginia Thompson Sept. 5, 1852 Tishomingo Co., MS; m2 Easter Bolton Hill; d. Sept. 5, 1900 and buried in Perry Bolton Cemetery, Franklin Co., AL. Note: More information about William Richard Jarnigan and his descendants can be found Vol. 13, pg. 8 and Vol. 36, pg. 3 of the Jernigan Home Page.
3. Clement Jarnagin b. abt 1830 TN
4. John J. Jarnagin b. abt 1833 TN; m. Martha Acuff Apr 25, 1859 Grainger Co., TN.
Note: William Richard, Clement, and John J. all lived in Mississippi in 1860. The 1860 census for Iuka, Tishomingo Co., MS enumerates the household of W. R. Jarnagan, age 30, b. TN, with wife, children and brother Clement Jarnagan, age 28, b. TN, working as a farm laborer. Next door was John Jarnagan, age 25, and wife Martha.
Children of Asa and Jane Finley Jarnagin:
1. Susan Jarnagin b. abt 1853 in TN
2. Joseph Asa Jarnagin b. Feb. 27 1857 in TN; d. Dec. 25, 1925; bu. Sunrise Cemetery, Grainger Co., TN; m. Alice Jenettie "Nettie" Farrar on 16 Nov. 1882 in Grainger Co., TN. Nettie was b. Nov. 29, 1869 in TN and d. Nov. 19, 1920 in Grainger Co. She was the daughter of Marion Farrar and Mary E. Davis. Joseph Asa and Nettie Farrar Jarnagin had a daughter named Maude, who married Fred Dyer. Fred and Maude Dyer had one daughter, name unknown. Maude Jarnagin Dyer died on Dec. 15, 1934.
3. Martha J. Jarnagin b. abt 1860 TN.
Note: Two other "mystery" children appear on census records with the widowed Jane Finley Jarnagin. In 1860 Grainger Co., there was a William Jarnagin, age 10, b. TN living with Jane. If this William was born in 1850, this would indicate that his mother was Jenny Hines Jarnagin. However, Asa and Jenny already had a son named William. In 1880 Grainger Co., there was a Paulina Jarnagin, dau, age 16, b. TN living in Jane's household. Since Asa died in July, 1858, we do not know who the father was of Paulina. Jane has not been located in an 1870 census record.
If anyone has further information about Asa Jarnagin, please contact one of the researchers at their email addresses listed above. Who are the missing children of Asa and Jenny Hines Jarnagin? Who were the parents of William Jarnagin b. abt 1850 and Paulina Jarnagin b. abt 1864? Since William Richard Jarnagin and Joseph Asa Jarnagin are the only two children we have been able to track, we would also like to find out what happened to the rest of Asa's children.

FAMILY OF WILLIAM B. AND JEMIMAH "MINNY" JARNAGIN HINES:
Information on this line was supplied by DeWayne Welborn, a 4th great grandson of William B. and Jemimah Jarnagin Hines. If anyone has further information on this line, please contact DeWayne at email address DWelborn@aol.com, or write to: DeWayne Welborn, 9325 N. 133rd E. Ave., Owasso, OK 74055.
William B. HINES was born about 1790. He died between 1840 and 1850, probably in DeKalb Co., AL. William B. was the son of James & Sarah Hines of Grainger Co.
His sister, Jenny Hines, married Asa Jarnagin, brother to William's wife Jemima.
William B. Hines fought in the War of 1812 in Capt. Joseph Rich's Co., Col. Samuel Bayles' Reg't, East Tennessee Militia. He enlisted on Nov. 13, 1814 and was discharged June 10, 1815.
Wm. B. Hines is found in Grainger Co. records through 1837. By 1840, he is living in DeKalb Co., AL, next to his daughter and her new husband, Sidney Hines Crow and George W. Crow. Another daughter, Mary Hines, will later marry William Crow, George's brother. William B. appears to be a widower at this time.
He presumably died by 1850, as he has not been found in an 1850 census record.
He was married to Jemima ("Minny") JARNAGIN (daughter of Noah JARNAGIN Sr. and Mary RUSSELL) on 19 Mar 1809 in Grainger Co., TN. Jemima ("Minny") JARNAGIN was born about 1793. She died sometime between Jan. 1, 1836, when her father's will was written in Grainger Co. TN, and 1840, when her husband, William B. Hines, appears as a widower in the DeKalb Co., AL census. William B. HINES and Jemima ("Minny") JARNAGIN had the following children:
1 Celina HINES b. abt 1811 in TN. Living in Cherokee Co., AL for the 1850 census.
She was married to Alexander BRATTON.
2 Warren Harrison HINES b. abt 1813 in TN. He was married to Sarah H. (maiden name unknown). Living in Cherokee Co., AL for the 1850 census. By 1860, he had moved to White River Twp., Independence Co., AR.
3 Sidney HINES b. abt 1820 in TN. She died in 1847 in DeKalb Co., AL. Married George Washington Crow. Living in Cherokee Co., AL for the 1850 census.
4 Mary HINES b. 1823 in TN. She died after 1858. Married William Crow on 29 Aug 1844 in DeKalb Co., AL. Mary & William Crow moved to Arkansas by 1850.

Teresa Guy Benson has had some luck, but still needs more help. She writes: I have recently gotten more information on my great granddaddy (William Kennedy Jernigan). He was spotted in an 1880 census living with his grandmother Mary Jernigan in Sampson County on a Westbrook farm. I am now looking for his mother and father. Any information on the family of Mary and Joseph Jernigan would really be appreciated.

Elizabeth Pettit has found further
information about her great-grandfather, Homer Jernigan b. July 1917, since the query she ran last month. She has a copy of Homer's obit from a 1987
Portales, NM paper. The obit states that Homer's parents were Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Jernigan. Homer lived in Sulphur, OK and married Ruth Matthews in
Sulphur in 1940. He married his second wife, Naomi Trujillo, in Clovis, NM in 1974. He had brothers Walter of Clovis; Tom of Sulphur Springs; and
sister Opal Welborn of Bakersfield, CA.
Children of Homer Jernigan:
Douglas, Dripping Springs, TX
Lynn, Kansas City, MO
Peggy Bell, Phoenix, AZ
Quita Rotenberry, Mohave, CA
Elizabeth says that Homer also had a daughter named Betty who married an Inman. Betty Inman was murdered in 1978. Betty had a daughter, Linda
Billington, and Elizabeth is Linda's daughter.
After hearing the name Roscoe Jernigan, we are able to tie Elizabeth's line of Jernigans to the Needham Jernigan line of Georgia. Roscoe was the son of
Andrew Jackson Jernigan and Lula/Ludie King of Brown Co., TX. Andrew Jackson was the son of Ptolemy and Sarah (Jarrell) Jernigan of Greene and
Marion County, GA. Ptolemy Jernigan was the son of Hardy and Frances (Colbert) Jernigan of Greene Co., GA; and Hardy was the son of Needham and
Elizabeth Jernigan of Hancock Co., GA.
Roscoe Jernigan married Nola Trogue on May 13, 1911 in Brown Co., TX.
Elizabeth is very interested in finding surviving members of this family. If you have any information for her, please
email her.

Another Group of Jernigans in Georgia and Northern Florida
Barbara Fowler has these questions:
A few months ago the homepage had an article on the Jernigans found in Helen Turk
Watson's book, William and Rebecca Liles Watson and Allied Families. Most of the Jernigans mentioned were from the Irwin County, GA groups.
However, on page 368, Mrs. Watson mentions that Walter Ray Jernigan, born November 7, 1926 in Laurel Hill, Okaloosa County, FL. Walter Ray Jernigan
married Eunice Della Brewer 25 November 1949. Mrs. Watson said that he was the son of Stephen Andrew Jernigan and wife, Emily Vivian Steele. Okaloosa
County is right on the FL/AL state line so I checked out the 1920 census there and found the following:
Stephen A. Jernigan age 30 b. GA
Imily (sic) 25 b. FL
Dorrell 5 b. FL
Will Ray 1 1/2 b. FL
Does anyone have any ideas as to where Stephen Andrew Jernigan was born?
Walter Ray Jernigan had three children who are probably still living. From the birth places of the children, it is apparent that Walter Ray
Jernigan was in the army. All three children were born on military bases. Can anyone tell us more about this line?

Gary Jernigan writes: My grandfather James Monroe Jernigan married Elizabeth Clark. His father was Calvin Morgan Jernigan and his mother was Martha Ann Wallace, and his father was Robert H. Jernigan and mother was Kathern <Kitsy> Owens. They were married in 1824 in Miss. I would like to know where the Indian comes in on our family. Thanks for any help that I might receive.

Editor's Note
May Day, May Day! OK it's not that bad, but I could use more info for the Jernigan Homepage, so keep on sending it in! Sorry the homepage is late again this month. I just got behind!!!
The third of May is a beautiful day here in PA. The flowers and trees are in full bloom. Even the apple trees are trying to make a valiant effort considering their age. I'm looking forward to the peonies and the stargazer lilies blooming later this month. Both are gorgeous flowers and they have a wonderful scent.
The first of May also heralds the anniversary of my sister's birth! Sharon, I hope you had a great birthday! She's not the only one, May is a busy time for our family. My dad-in-law's birthday is on the 3rd, cousin D'mitri's is on the 4th, my niece Jenna's is on the 11th, Ed's cousin Brian is on the 14th, (he and his wife are in labor now and will have a little one by tomorrow!) and last but not least, our twins, Krystal and Kim celebrate their birthday on the 22nd. Add Mother's Day and you can see I'll be doing lots of shopping this month! Hallmark is going to love me! Happy Birthday to all of the Jernigans born in May!
Cyndi has decided to attend Slippery Rock University this fall and will be staying in the dorm even though it's less than an hour's drive. So the first bird is leaving the nest soon! We are quite proud of her accomplishments over the past year as she has worked her way through college and maintained excellent grades throughout!
Krystal is still working on her driver's license. She has to have a minimum amount of driving time and between my work and Cyndi's work, there has been few times that the car has been available. But she should have her time in by the beginning of June. Then of course, she'll have to pass Ed's driving test before he'll let her take the real one. I don't think that she is looking forward to that too much. She has also been quite busy doing lots of community service. She and her sister Kim did the 30 hour famine where they fasted for 30 hours while making sandwiches to give out to the homeless in Pittsburgh, collected food for the food pantry and built a home out of cardboard boxes and duct tape to sleep in outside. They each raised $100.00 each. Krystal also was the March of Dimes Walk of Life organizer for her school. She and Kim also helped with Earth Day at their school. Although I'm not sure the organizers are too with it as they had the kids serving food on Styrofoam plates and drinks in Styrofoam cups! Oh well...
Kim is busy as usual with her church activities. She and Krystal belong to two different church youth groups. The second youth group has kept Kim going with organizing their music library and a youth service. She and Krystal also are members of the handbell choir as well as the drama group at church. In case you are wondering why we were searching the earth for a prom dress for Kim, it is because she wouldn't be caught dead in a prom dress! She says she has better things to do with her time and money.
Our main activity lately has been shopping for a prom dress for Krystal. I was beginning to think we would never find what she was looking for. Not that it was an unreasonable concept. She was looking for a blue dress with a poofy skirt. Even everyone at work was giving us suggestions as to where to shop. After driving from Pittsburgh to almost the Ohio border and everywhere in between, we finally found a perfect dress! I think that after I recuperate from this shopping trip, we'd better start looking for next year's gown! The prom is on the 11th of May. So we were cutting it close. Especially as we need to have this one hemmed. But I am so glad it is over! Now all we have to do is get her hair done and send her on her merry way!
As usual every 3rd weekend in April, we made the trek to Plymouth, NC to commemorate the Battle of Plymouth. (That is a long weekend trip!) At the memorial service, I honored Alfred and William Jernigan who fought at that battle by telling about them and lighting a candle in their memory. Alfred was the ancestor of Edna Jernigan's husband.
I hope that you are enjoying your spring weather as well! Nothing like a beautiful day to make you want to go cemetery hopping! Have fun, see you in June.
Until then... Happy Hunting!
