More on Willis Jernigan and Sarah Bailey Line
Roger Kilpatrick contacted Barbara J. Fowler some time ago concerning a Jane Jernigan, mother of Tillman Kilpatrick. He was trying to find the gravesite of Tillman Kilpatrick. Roger knew that Jane’s father was Willis Jernigan and that they were in SE Alabama. With those few facts we determined that Jane was the daughter of Willis Jernigan and Sarah Ann Bailey who married in Houston County, GA and then moved to Alabama. We found Jane Jernigan on the 1850 census with her parents at age three in Houston County, GA.
Roger recently wrote that he had located the burial site of Tillman Kilpatrick in the Tabernacle Church Cemetery in Geneva County, AL. Tillman was born 11 April 1870 and died 11 December 1960. On the same plot with Tillman Kilpatrick was his mother, Mary Jane Jernigan Kilpatrick, born 21 Aug 1847, died 29 January 1932. In the Barbour County, AL courthouse, Roger found a marriage record for Jane Jernigan and Marion Kilpatrick 14 January 1869. Roger has not located the gravesite of Marion Kilpatrick as yet. We want to thank Roger for this follow-up information and hope that he will keep sending us Jernigan material.
**
Roger Kilpatrick is still sending us Jernigan material. He forwarded this obituary from the Dothan Eagle March 14, 2001 issue. Our prayers and thoughts are with the family of Mr. Daniel P. Jernigan, Jr.
Mr. Daniel P. Jernigan, Jr., 80, of Samson, died March 13, 2001, at White Foster Home in Bonifay, Fla., after an extended illness. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. today at Geneva City Cemetery with Pittman Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The newspaper gave his DOB as 02 February 1920. Parents: DP and Lillie Irene Jernigan Sr. Brother: Malcolm Lewis Jernigan of St Louis, MO.

Dan Jackson is very
confused and needs your help! He writes, "I descend from Lewis Jernigan of Johnson Co who died in 1818 through
his son Kedar. From me to Lewis I have good documentation for proof. As with others who descend from a Lewis Jernigan of Johnston Co. the question
remains from whom does this Lewis Jernigan descend. The Jernigan Reunion lists him as the son of Henry as named in his will of 1781. I had earlier
believed through other sources that Kedar's father Lewis was the son of Jacob Jernigan, Sr. of Bertie Co. Since I have been searching the Bryan
family as well, I know the only reference to Lewis Jernigan as son of Jacob, Sr. was the will of Needham Bryan, Sr. of Bertie Co. His will bequeaths to
this "fore grandsons Ezekil Wimberly Lewis Gardner and Joseph Jernigan (no punctuation in the original) and my daughters son William hur first born
each of them a (unreadable)." Jernigan researchers have interpreted this unpunctuated list of grandsons as Ezekil Wimberly, Lewis, Gardner, and
Joseph Jernigan. Also there is reference to young Jacob Jernigan. This is made clearer by reading the estate records of Needham Bryan, Sr. These
records show that equal payments of 8 shillings 4 pence were made to the following: Ezekil Williams (sic), Lewis Gardner, Joseph Jearnigan, and
William Bryan. This tells me that these are the "fore" grandsons mentioned in the will. Jacob Jearnigan Jr. received 3 pounds. Furthermore, the
will of Jacob Jernigan, Sr. of Bertie Co. names sons Benjamin, Arthur, daughter Rachel Watts and grandson Josiah son of Joseph, granddaughter
Zilpha Jernigan. Another researcher names Lewis Jernigan of Johnston Co. as the son of Jacob Jernigan of Bertie Co. based on an incorrect deed abstract.
The abstract reads Jacob Jernigan of Bartie Co. to my son Lewis Jernigan of Johnston Co."
However I made a copy of the entire deed in Smithfield and it clearly reads "I the said Jacob Jernigan of the County of Bartie Co. and
State of North Carolina for and in consideration of Love good will and affection which I have and do bear towards my loving grandson Lewis Jernigan
of the County of Johnston and State aforesaid. . . ." Just to add more confusion here is a deed from Wayne Co. NC dated 11 September 1811. I'll
abstract. I Lewis Jernigan, Sen. of Johnston Co. for love and affection to my grandson Lewis Jernigan, Jun. son of Kedar Jernigan a tract of land in
Wayne Co. . . . it being the "same more or less the same which was conveyed by Lewis Jernigan Sen. to the said Lewis Jernigan, Jun." We all know that
deeds usually, at least early deed, give reference to previous grantors. The quoted line above tells me that the current grantor Lewis Jernigan,
Sen, was the grantee as Lewis Jernigan, Jun. who received this land from another
Lewis Jernigan Sen. No date was given for the earlier deed. My favorite monkey wrench is the following deed: Wayne Co. NC Deed Book 12 p. 380.
Lewis Jernigan deed to Elisha Uzzell a resident of the State of Kentucky, for land situated in the State of Tennessee that was bounty land which was
given to his father, GARDNER JERNIGAN, for his services in the Revolutionary War. Wit: Major Uzzell, 14 April 1823. Dear Jernigan cousins. Is there
any rhyme or reason to the Lewis Jernigans of Johnston and Wayne CO. NC?"

The following query comes from Donna Johnson, who is the daughter of Ruby Nell Jarnagin, daughter of Everett Hugh Jarnagin, son of Maroni Jarnagin, son of John Porter Jarnagin, son of D. Nelson Jarnagin, son of John Jarnagin. Donna writes:
I am researching the family of John Jarnagin and Mary Smith. I have
hit a brick wall with their great-grandson, John Porter Jarnagin, grandson of John
and Susanna (Clark) Jarnagin and son of D. Nelson and Rachel (Inman) Jarnagin. I have been told he moved from Kentucky to Texas to
the Indian Territory to Arkansas. He is supposed to be buried at Danville, AR. His wife,
Sarah Elizabeth Rogers Jarnagin, is buried in Quay, New Mexico. My great-grandfather, his son Maroni Douglas
Jarnagin, seems to have dropped from site. Nothing I find on John Porter mentions Maroni. The information I do have came from Maroni's
youngest daughter, who is in her nineties and her memory is fading. Maroni Douglas Jarnagin was born abt 1882 in Yell Co., AR and he
married Hattie May Martin on July 26, 1903 in Yell Co. by Rev. John Walters. He died Aug 16, 1938 from seizures in a mental institution
somewhere in Arkansas. He and Hattie are both buried in Yell Co. When Maroni went to the institution, Hattie had to split the older children
up between other family members. She and three of the children went to live with her parents. I have not found any further information in
tax records, SSDI, etc.
Anyone with further information on John Porter Jarnaign or Maroni Jarnagin please contact
Donna.

Editor's Note
It is April Fools Day! But I don't plan on playing any tricks on y'all. I thought of a really great trick to play though! You have to have 2 phone lines and a friend who has call waiting. This is a great one if you hate being put on hold because someone else calls while you are talking to your friend. What you do is call your friend and then dial their number on your other line so that their call waiting beeps. When they switch over to the other line tell them that it is still you. Keep it up and see how long it takes them to figure it out!
I had a great birthday! It started the Saturday before and went through this whole week! The girls threw me a pizza-movie night on Saturday. Then on my birthday, we went out to eat with Ed's cousin, Beth and her husband, Rob whose birthday is the same as mine. It was lots of fun! Thanks to all the Jernigans who sent me cards and well wishes! Y'all are great!
Spring is supposed to be here, but it is dragging it's feet. But we are slowly but surely seeing the signs. Our daffodils are starting to bud and hopefully will be in full bloom soon. You can't get annuals around here until the end of April. That's pitiful! But I am patiently waiting to fill my flower boxes until then.
The twin's took the SAT this past Saturday. They think they did well. I certainly hope so!
Cyndi is recovering nicely from her carpal-tunnel operation. Now she is trying to figure out when to do the other hand.
My temporary job has become officially permanent which is good! I really enjoy working there. They put me through an orientation where everyone from the president on down meets with you and tells you what their job is with the company. It is great knowing who to go to for what now! I get the big picture much better.
I hope that all of you have a blessed Easter! Isn't God wonderful for giving us such a great gift! Take advantage of it and pass it on! Just think how much fun it is going to be getting all of the answers from our ancestors when we get to heaven!
Keep sending info and I'll see you again in May!
Until then... Happy Hunting!
