SKETCHES FROM THE LIVES AND WORKS OF SOUTHERN TEACHERS
by C.C. HUGHES AND MISS BESSIE A. WALDEN
LOUISVILLE, KY.
BAPTIST BOOK CONCERN 1894

(excerpt from the "PREFACE")

"Our matter is supplemented by a short work on Mathematics, by Prof. F. M. Shields, of Coopwood, Miss.

This we believe will prove of value and interest to teachers and all seekers of education."

(From the page preceding a selection of 46 problems and some comments on mathematics and also on the use of the English language.)

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF F.M. SHIELDS

Prof. F. M. Shields, author of the problems to be found upon the following pages, was born in Autaga County, Ala., in 1835.

His father, John Shields, was a native of South Carolina.

Francis Marion (named for General Marion) was graduated at the Military College in Tennessee. He served through the late war, was promoted to Brigadier-General and was State Drill Master for a time. He has taught for thirty years and has ever been a lover of progress. He has been, for years, a contributor to the mathematical columns of some of the leading educational journals of this and other countries. He has a style peculiarly his own, and his problems are by their oddity wont to arouse a curiosity for the reader for their solution.

As a contributor to the mathematical columns of the Educational Times, of London, Eng., his work is brought before and solved by some of the most learned men of that and other countries, and he is most unhesitatingly pronounced a phenomenon and a natural-born mathematician.

His connection with various journals of the United States has familiarized his talent with the people of our country. He has charge of the Mathematical Department of the Educational Courant published at Louisville, Ky., and furnishes problems for the Chicago World, the Mathematical Magazine, at Washington, D.C., and many other journals.

Prof. Shields is a Master Mason, an Odd Fellow, and a member of the Baptist Church. He loves to think.

(The following is one of the simpler problems included. I chose it because while many of the problems had drawings with them, this did not require one.)

IX SUGAR PROBLEM

My agent in New York purchased a quantity of sugar for me at 5 cts. pr. pound, for which I allowed him a commission of 1 4/5 %; his commission amounts to $18.18. How many barrels of sugar (of 200 lbs. each) did he buy? And how much money must I send him to pay for the bill of sugar, including his commission?

(I further include several of his closing paragraphs of advice to "critics".)

"Let your extemporaneous discantings and unpremeditated expiations have intelligibility without rhodomontade or thrasonical bombast. Sedulously avoid all posyllabical profundity pompous prolixity and ventriloquial verpidity. Shun double entendre and prurient jocosity, whether obscure or apparent. In other words speak truthfully, naturally, clearly, purely, kindly, and by all means do not use large words.

A few final remarks. An obituary published in the Winston County Journal of 24 August, 1906. (from a cousin, Joelyn James) describes his as a land surveyor, editor of a mathematical column of Education Courant, a monthly journal published in Louisville, Ky., served as a Lt. in the Army of the Confederacy and taught in the Winston County ,Ms. schools. Postmaster at Coopwood Post Office. Authoree math books reputed to be widely used in England. Also reputedly corresponded with William Gladstone (one time P.M. of England). Supposedly these letters were lost when Francis Marion Jr.'s house burned Feb. 26, 1921.

The use of the title "professor" was very common, I believe, for senior male teachers of the time. I've heard it used to my father in the 1940s by men of his own age. The "Brigadier General" rank used by the author in the Sketch is not found anywhere else. I've heard my father use it but he likely derived it from the publication. In the military records from the National Archives he is listed as head of "Captain Shields' Company" so that is the rank used on his marker.

His wife, Sarah Thomas Jernigan, died in 1901 and in 1904 (I think) he went to Ca. to live with one of his daughters, T. Belle (I wonder if the T. doesn't stand for Thomas or maybe Tomasina which would explain why it's always shown as "T. Belle").

Newspaper article (no date) found in Sarah Elizabeth Kemp Young's Scrapbook-October, 2000 at Guy Young's Home in Winston County, Mississippi

Below is a copy of a letter written by F. M. Shields, grandfather of Mrs. J. H. Kemp and Mrs. Albert Catledge, to his son, J. T. Shields, who left home for California.

Mr. Shields was a surveyor in Winston County and lived in the Eastern section of the County at Coopwood post office. He wrote many articles for the Winston County Journal, prior to his going to California himself, where he died at ripe old age.

The letter:

"HOME" Dec. 25th, 1878
A Christmas Gift to John T. Shields -From his loving "Pa."
XC 90th Psalm, 12th verse-
"So Teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom" ------

Learn to keep good company. Do not be ashamed to pray. Read good books and all news papers. Learn to make money and be sure to keep it. Any person can make money but it takes a wise man to keep it. Never have too many friends. Make a good character and defend it. learn to save. Make good trades or none at all. Never lie. Never do a mean act. Always think before you act.

Never be persuaded by other boys------risk your own judgment. Make money-------if you can't get a big price take a small one, and be sure to get the cash. Self-denial is the great virtue-----practice self-denial----every man is the architect of his own future welfare.

Love God and honor your Parents----finally, "make your calling and election sure." "PA."

Notes for Bessie Jerningan:  In Memory

After months of suffering with TB it pleased God to call from this life my dear wife, Bessie Guynes, formerly Miss Bessie Jerningan.

She was born July 16, 1899 and died May 4, 1926, making her stay on earth almost thirty-six years. She was first married to Charlie Womble. To this union there were two children to mourn her loss. After Mr. Womble's death she then married J. W. Guynes. She joined the Baptist Church years ago and we trust and believe that she is now enjoying eternal rest.

Our good pastor of the Louisville Baptist Church conducted the funeral services, and her body was laid to rest in the Masonic Cemetery.

She leaves her mother, Mrs. S.E. Jernigan, three brothers, R. E., E. C. and Albert Jernigan, and one sister, Mrs. Huel Kemp, beside her husband and children and many relatives and friends to mourn her loss.

A precious one from us is gone,
A voice we loved is stilled;
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.
We go mourning every day,
We can not help but weep;
We are sad and lonely,
Since dear mother fell asleep.
Oh, give us a heart to pray,
To pray and never cease,
Never to mourn at your stay,
Or wish our suffering less.
Dear mother, thou hast left us,
Thy loss we deeply feel,
But tis God who has befit us,
He can all our sorrows heal.
She is gone, but not forgotten.
Never will her memory fade,
Sweetest thoughts will ever linger
Around the grave where she is laid.
                              Mrs. E. C. Jernigan

William Morgan sent in the following article which appeared in the Wednesday, February 21, 2001 edition of the Orlando Sentinel:

"Jernigan Wins Lake Mary Seat"
by Robert Perez of the Sentinel Staff

LAKE MARY - Lake Mary voters picked a longtime member of the city's planning board over a political newcomer Tuesday to fill a vacancy on the City Commission.

Janet Jernigan, a Lucent Technologies project manager, garnered 365 votes to defeat insurance administrator David Hoppen, who received 160 votes.

The election was required after Commissioner Al Crump resigned to take a job in Texas.

Jernigan will serve out Crump's term and will face re-election in November.

Robert Perez can be reached at rperez@orlandosentinel.com or 407-322-1298.

Editor's Note

Ah March! Spring may not have made it to the chilly north, but it sure is trying!  Every once in a while we get a glimpse of the good days to come.  I can hardly wait!

This past month was so busy it wasn't even funny!  (Yet a lot of it was fun!)  Valentine's Day was Ed and my 20th wedding anniversary.  We got the surprise of our lives when, thinking we were going to a meeting on a mission trip for our daughter, we arrived to find a roomful of friends and family waiting to celebrate our anniversary with us!  This sneaky event was a collusion between by wonderful mom and dad-in-law and our three daughters!  The party was held at the church and we commented on how many lies were told to get us there.  The preacher even lied to us as he was the one to insist that both of us attend the mission meeting!  We of course forgave everyone and had an absolutely fantastic time!

Cyndi's birthday ended the month of celebrations.  She turned 19.  Gee she sure is getting old!  Speaking of old, my cousin Deb (the one who is 6 weeks older than me!) turned another year older and made the paper!  (web address above) She is definitely the coupon queen of the family.  I think I'd better take some lessons from her even though I did get her started!  She has waaay out passed me!

Our twin's were formally inducted into the National Honor Society this past weekend.  We are so proud of them!

In between all the fun stuff, I was still adjusting to my new job and saying goodbye to an old one.  February 28th was Charleston-online.com's last day on the web.  I was very sad to see it end.  I refuse to call it a failed business because I learned so many valuable lessons and skills while working on it and met some wonderful people as well.  It was definitely a great investment and a time I will fondly remember.  If you have been emailing me at marla@charleston-online.com, that email address is no longer valid.  Please change your address books to mboots@worldnet.att.net.

Cyndi had surgery on her hand this me first of March.  She has carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands.  But her right one was extremely bad.  So they did that one first.  She plans to wait a little while before having the other one done.  She has to miss two weeks of work after the surgery and doesn't like what it does to her checking account!  The surgery went off like clockwork, except they told us to be at the hospital 2 hours before her 8:45am surgery.  That meant I had to get up at 5:30am to get her there on time!  I am not a morning person!!!!   What made it so bad is that they didn't do anything with her until 8:30.  So we sat there for almost 2 hours for nothing!  How frustrating!  Her hand is a little sore, but her spirits are good.  She should have a quick recovery if I can just get her to behave for a few days!

This month brings St. Patrick's Day and my 39th birthday!  Two great days for celebrating!  (Wearing green is optional for the 26th!)  All you other Jernigans having birthdays, I wish you happy times on your special day!  I've been really busy lately, but still would love to hear from y'all!  Keep sending that info!  I'll try to get the next homepage out on time!!!!  As long as those leprechauns leave me be!  Hope y'all find your pot o' gold!

Until then... Happy Hunting!

Your editor,
Marla Boots
