Correction: Last month I had an error in the NC Marriages.  Frank Jernigan wrote to tell me that the name Francis O. Jernigan is in error. It should be  Travis C. [Christenbury] Jernigan. Elizabeth Snead was his second wife.  His first wife was Judith O'Brian. Travis was Frank's great uncle.  Here is the record as it appeared under Richmond Co, NC in last month's issue.

J652   18 June 1860   Francis O Jernigan m. Elizabeth Snead

Hope that clears up any confusion!  Thanks Frank!

Here are some more of those marriage records that I found.  I do believe that these were done by Kay Stone.

I received notice of this scam and decided that I should put it on the homepage to warn any of my readers in case they are contacted too.  Be very wary of this company!  familydiscovery.com

Vickie Mitchell writes  "I am just trying to let others know of a scam that has happened to me.  I received an e-mail about familydiscovery.com and for $59.99 fee you have a lifetime membership.  When I signed up and tried to log in a message came up telling me that I have been scammed.  I immediately called my credit card company and they are canceling my card and will send me a new one but I will still be out the money.  It just makes me sick and I thought you might like to warn your visitors about this scam."

Roy C. Dunkum Jr. sent me the following poem.  It makes a great point!

STRANGERS IN THE BOX

Come, look with me inside this drawer,
In this box I've often seen,
At the pictures, black and white,
Faces proud, still, serene.
I wish I knew the people,
These strangers in the box,
Their names and all their memories
Are lost among my socks.
I wonder what their lives were like,
How did they spend their days?
What about their special times?
I'll never know their ways.
If only someone had taken time
To tell who, what, where, or when,
These faces of my heritage
Would come to life again.
Could this become the fate
Of the pictures we take today?
The faces and the memories
Someday to be passed away?
Make time to save your stories,
Seize the opportunity when it knocks,
Or someday you and yours could be.......
The strangers in the box.

Joan Johnson sends this fruit cake recipe for the bakers among our readers!  As she says, "I am sure that this has had some adaptations thru the years, because I am sure that some of these ingredients were hard to come by in the old days.( I know that prunes were used for dates sometime, not the same taste, but served purpose.) Mom Macon (Edward Jernigan Macon) said they had their own cherries, apricots, peaches, plums and grapes to dry and can the juices, etc.  She said they put up (canned, preserved, dried, etc.) everything they raised or exchanged with neighbors. This is a Great Cake, and everyone who taste it ask for the recipe. My grandmother was Edward Jernigan Macon, daughter of Samuel Rufus Jernigan, and granddaughter of Harriett Newell Jernigan, wife of Wiley Hudson Jernigan. I guess this came from Harriett. Enjoy..."

Jim Utley writes, "I was at church tonight rehearsing for a musical program and we played a lot of songs by Dennis Jernigan. Do you know where he's from? I am curious if he's part of my line from Richmond County, N.C."

Although I too listen to his music, I am not sure which line he is from.  Perhaps someone else out there knows.  If so, please contact Jim.

Lenore Anderson is seeking information on her Jernegans and wonders if they are related to the Jernigans in the US.  If anyone can help, please contact Lenore.  She writes, "I am sending a request for more information if you have it on the Jernegan family from Suffolk, England.  My ancestor apparently links to Penelope Jernegan born in 1568 in Somerleyton, Suffolk, England.  She apparently married Thomas Spencer who had a child in 1622 in Chertley, Surrey, England.  Their child's name is Penelope, who married John Treworgy or Kingsweare, Devon, England. Thank you for all that you can share with me.  I will be anxious to hear from you."

Editor's Note

Thanksgiving is over and Christmas is around the corner!  Hard to believe that this year is almost over.  I guess time flies even when you aren't having fun!

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving with 12 around our table.  Ed's parents, Aunt, Uncle and cousins joined our family as we enjoy good food as well as each other's company.  I made a 24 1/2 pound turkey to make sure that there were plenty of leftovers for the mandatory turkey sandwiches!  Ed's cousins must have had a great time because after leaving in the afternoon, they came back to play games that night!  All in all it was a great day!

Ed's parents stayed through the weekend and it was fun having them here.  My daughter's and I did not do our traditional "Day after Thanksgiving, up at dawn and waiting outside the store for it to open" tradition this year.  We were all too broke to go shopping!  But before you get worried, pretty much all of my Christmas shopping was done and wrapped well before Thanksgiving so that my in-laws could play Santa and take the presents home with them.

We may have a new member of the family.  A beautiful black long-haired cat with an upside down white triangle on his chest showed up and has adopted us.  He is so healthy that we were sure he belonged to someone, but nobody has claimed him yet.  We are going to put an ad in the paper to see if he is lost and if someone is looking for him.  In the meantime, we have named him Shadow.  Sneakers and Tigger, while perhaps not welcoming him with open arms, have deign to put up with his presence.  No out and out cat fights yet in other words.  Shadow has pretty much moved in and claimed the kitchen as his regular hangout.  Ed says that now we have a cat on every floor!  He is taking this pretty well considering he told all of us girls that we would not be getting any additional cats at all...period!  Of course, you can find him playing with all three cats when they are nearby.  He's a sucker for playful animals.

I am recovering from my computer crashing, slowly but surely.  I'm looking forward to the day when they develop a crash proof computer!  That would be nice huh!

Cyndi has joined the work force and is happily working at Dairy Queen.  She is also still doing well at college and is preparing for the next semester to start.

December is a big birthday month for my brother's family.  Mark, my brother, has a birthday on the 8th and his son, Benjamin, will have a birthday on the 23rd.  Happy Birthday to both of you!  Benjamin, I'll see you on your birthday!  And don't forget the Christ Child's birthday on the 25th!

We will be making the trip down to SC to visit with our families for Christmas.  It will be a quick trip as Ed has to be back to work.  But it should be fun!  My brother and his family as well as my cousin and her family will be there for a big family reunion.  There will be 12 of us around my parent's tree on Christmas morning.  That should be a treat!  We'll spend Christmas eve with Ed's parents and his brother's family.  That will make for a very full two days!

I hope that you and yours will have a wonderful Christmas holiday.  Remember the reason for the season - God's greatest gift to mankind - His son Jesus.  God bless you and Merry Christmas!  See you in the New Year!  (The real millennium year!)

Until then... Happy Hunting!

Your editor,
Marla Boots
