Information Exchange

The following information was in my file cabinet (Marla Boots) and I am not sure exactly where it came from, but I think that it may be the work of Kay Stone.  If not, I apologize to the the person who worked so hard on this info.  There are more marriage records, which I will put on the next homepage.  My fingers have had it for tonight!

Inquiries

Alice Hood Lynn sends the following request. I am researching Hood genealogy and find that my great great grandmother was Elizabeth Jane Jernigan. According to my information she was born about 1817 in North Carolina. She married my gggrandfather, Daniel Stone Hood about 1833 in Wayne County, NC. and moved to Dale County, Al where they raised ten children. This is all the information I have but would love find more.

Jana Chinn is looking for information on Varie/Vaurie/Vira Smith whose second husband was Frank Jernigan.  She was b. around 1880 in McNairy Co., TN to Peter Silas and Eliza Adaline Smith.  Her brothers were John Eli, Benjamin, and Henry T.; sisters were Lula Priscilla and Ella.  Varie was first married to Oscar Shelton.  Her second marriage to Frank Jernigan produced 3 children that Jana knows about:  Paul (married Ester?), Hugh/Hughey, and Hazel.  Their last known place of residence was Cherry, TN.  If anyone has further information about these folks, please contact Jana by email or phone (256) 230-3660.

Claudia Moore is the great-granddaughter of Henry Walter Thornton, from Mississippi, and his wife Virginia Caroline Smith (better known as "Valley Calley"), b. in Louisiana. They are found in the 1880 census for Trinity Co., TX as follows:

1880 Trinity Co., TX, E.D. 107, pg. 18, June 1, 1880, #170, #174:
Thornton, Henry W., 25, married, farmer, b. MS, parents b. SC
Virginia C. (age 20-something; difficult to read), wife, keeps house, b. LA, father b. England, mother b. GA
Journigan, Sarah, 35, mother-in-law, widowed, GA GA GA
Bettie, 13, dau LA, GA GA
Sarah, 11, dau, LA GA GA
Vinsin(?) (Binson? Benson?), 6, son, LA GA GA

Sarah Journigan was Valley Calley's mother. Which Jernigan did she marry? Why was Virginia's surname Smith; was Sarah first married to a Smith? We suspect that these Jernigans are connected to Ron Jernigan's group in Trinity Co., TX. His line was from Alexander Jernigan b. abt 1797 NC, married (1) Salita Unknown; married (2) Caroline Elizabeth Ashworth. Alexander lived in FL & GA before coming to Trinity Co., TX. He had a son named William Alexander "Alex" who married C. Samantha Thornton b. abt 1855 MS (maybe a sister of Henry?).

Claudia writes that the children of Henry W. Thornton and Virginia were:
Aaron
Mirty
Nolan b. June 1884
Lela b. Aug. 5, 1882; d. 2 Sep. 1954; m. Norman Speer; buried in Huntsville, TX. She was the first lady sheriff of TX. He was the warden of Huntsville State penitentiary and started the prison's rodeo.
Lucy Lee b. 4 Mar 1894; d. 9 May 1969; m1 Morris Wm. Moore; m2 Louis Luder. Lucy Lee is Claudia's grandmother.
Mattie b. 4 Mar 1894; d. 1910 of black jaundice. She was Lucy's twin.
Berta May b. Nov. 1887; d. 1947; m. Hubert Harrelson.
Elizabeth b. Sep. 1888; m. Clifton Roberts.

Please contact Claudia if you have further information about this line of Thorntons and Jernigans.

Editor's Note

Happy All Saints Day!

Hopefully you aren't scared stiff after the little goblins showed up at your door last night demanding candy.  Our Halloween was very quiet.  Again this year I had great candy and no trick or treaters.  So Ed and the girls will enjoy it.

Something scared my computer a couple of weeks ago and it crashed.  But I was able to get most of it back together so that I could get this homepage up and running.  I did lose some mail, so if there was supposed to be something on this homepage that isn't (inquiry, info or web address), please send it to me again.

Tigger (who is three years old now) gave all of us a big scare at 5:00am one Saturday morning.  We awoke to a loud bang and I realized it was our TV.  Tigger had somehow pulled it down off of the entertainment center. Now this was no small feat as the TV weighs a good 50 pounds.  When we investigated, we found the TV on the floor, still intact, with no signs of Tigger.  We doubted that the TV would ever work again and decided that Tigger was hiding out because he knew that he was in trouble; so we decided to go back to bed.  Sleep however eluded us and Ed decided to get up and see if he could get the TV, vcr and entertainment center back to rights while I continued to try to doze off.  Well at 6:45 Ed comes in and tells me that we have to go to the vet.  He had gotten the TV all hooked up again and went to get a drink of water.  On top of the microwave laid Tigger, with blood dripping out of his back paw.  He had split it lengthways about 2 inches and it wasn't a pretty sight. We took him to the vet and he ended up amputating one of Tigger's toes, but otherwise, he was amazingly ok.  Apparently his foot was the only part of him hit by the TV.  Tigger is still limping around here, but is doing quite nicely considering.  We are just grateful that he is alive!  Oh and believe it or not, the TV still works!

That was enough excitement for the month. We have been laying low since then so there is nothing else exciting to say, thank goodness!  Sneakers, our other cat, has been mercifully well behaved lately!

But that could change this month as now we are looking toward having the Boots family to our house for Thanksgiving.  It shouldn't be too big of a crowd, I'm guessing less than 20.  Ed's parents are coming up for the weekend and we will have all of his cousins and Aunt and Uncle here as well.  So we should have a good time. Remember to thank God for all of the wonderful blessings in your life at this special time and every day!

Keep sending me stuff!  I look forward to hearing from you.

Until then... Happy Hunting!

Marla Boots
