Bob Hope Christmas Special - NBC TV

In 1985, Bob Hope was preparing another one of his annual Christmas Specials. This type of show was one of the last  true variety shows of it's kind and the last of an era. For Special Costume Artist's like myself it was a joy in that I was given a chance to create some wonderful Fantasy Characters to entertain the public with.

For this skit Bob, and his celebrity guests,  Brooke Shields and Emmanuel Lewis were called upon to play a group of unsold dolls left behind in a toy shop window after the seasonal Christmas rush had come and gone.

Reminiscent of the latest Cabbage Patch Kids at the time, the scene was filled with familiar jokes and included a soft shoe song and dance number that the three actors performed as a finale to the piece.

After the costume designer designed the type of costumes the dolls would be wearing for the segment, the dolls themselves were designed and produced by me with the aide of a couple of NBC costumers to expedite the finished figures. Television, in the mid 80's was still at this time a wonderful place to work where  given a bit of inspiration you could really  have fun using the media to present a little old world trickery and spread a little holiday cheer at the same time.

Below are a couple of production stills and a behind the scenes look at the magic in the making. Enjoy....MB

Brooke Shields character before costuming.
