Junior High School Building at the Greenwich Japanese School

When I first arrived in New York, the Japanese School was in its temporary location in Yonkers. The move to Greenwich took 5 years of planning, and required personnel and funding at an unprecedented level. Mistakes were not forgiven, and we lowered our heads to the volunteer members of the Japan Educational Institute.
We were overjoyed as our move to Greenwich approached. However, each day brought new problems that had to be dealt with. For example, their are currently three flags located south of the junior high school grounds, but at the time that area served as the parking lot for the school buses. After our neighbors complained that the location was unsightly, we moved the parking lot. Then there was the time when the neighbors complained that the lights on campus were too bright, making it look like a stadium. We gained approval after placing covers on all of the campus lights. These are just a few examples of the various roadblocks to the new building. It was a lesson learned that what works in Japanese culture does not necessarily work in America.
During the summer of 1992, the renovations were speeded up, and the first phase was completed by the end of August. Under the bright and sunny skies of Tuesday, the first of September, the first school buses puled into the Greenwich facility. The student's eyes shone at the spaciousness and beauty of our new campus.
(Roughly translated from former principal Hirasawa, "Gurenichikaiko no omoide")
