Warren Suttles & The Dreamers

Suttles formed the Dreamers with a goal in mind: it was an experiment to get a black group that didn't sound too black. The other members of the Dreamers were: Harriet Calander (mezzo soprano), Percy Green (second tenor) and Freddy Francis (baritone). They originally signed a contract with Savoy, but don't seem to have recorded anything there. Their first recordings were issued on Jubilee, in 1951:

JUBILEE
5053 These Things I Miss (Warren)/Can't Get You Off My Mind (all) — 3/51

In early 1952, with tenor Joe Van Loan replacing Harriet Calander for one session, they backed up Wini Brown as "Her Boyfriends" on Mercury:

MERCURY
8270 Be Anything - Be Mine/Heaven Knows Why — 2/52

(NOTE: the other record by Wini Brown & Her Boyfriends on Mercury has Wini backed by a group that Joe Van Loan put together.)

   UNRELEASED MERCURY
Way Downtown At The Bottom Of The Hill

In April, the Dreamers recorded for Mercury:

MERCURY
5843 Ain't Gonna Worry No More (Harriet)/I'm Gonna Hate Myself In The Morning (all) — 4/52
70019 Please Don't Leave Me (all)/Walkin' My Blues Away (Warren) — 10/52

   UNRELEASED MERCURY
      Oh That Kiss (all)
I Came To The City (all)
Until The Real Thing Comes Along (all)
You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To (all)

The Dreamers also backed up bandleader Arnett Cobb on a pair of Okeh sides. Joe Van Loan is present, not Harriet Calander. Regardless of the master numbers, both sides were recorded June 9, 1952.

OKEH
6912 Someone To Watch Over Me — Ca. 10/52
6928 Linger Awhile — Ca. 12/52

They were NOT the "Dreamers" who backed up Bubber Johnson on Mercury; see the sidebar on "Joe Van Loan's Early Career".

In late 1952, after the Dreamers had broken up, Suttles rejoined the Ravens.
