What is Spam-Killer?

Spam-killer is an internal Worldnet users Newsgroup .  It was formed for the purpose of providing the spam fighters of Worldnet a place to provide assistance and support to all those interested in helping to eliminate spam from the Internet.  The newsgroup is not manned by Forum Assistants or monitored by AT&T for anything other than Terms of Service Violations.

What kind of posts are acceptable?

Spam-killer is a user group, so the rules are limited to on-topic posts and posts not in conflict with the Worldnet Terms of Service.

On-topic posts can be questions about spam, requests for assistance with tracing spam, general spam-related information, links to other sites and posts, "kill" notifications, and the like.

Please be aware of copyrights when posting information found in other newsgroups and on other sites.  Generally, a brief synopsis of the article and a URL will suffice.

I need help tracing a spam, should I post the entire spam?

No.  The full headers are adequate information for locating the source of the spam.  If there are any web page URLs shown in the spam, those may be included in the post.  Please edit out the body of the spam.  We do not want to waste any more bandwidth on spam or give the spammers any more of an audience.

Is posting in HTML acceptable?

No.  Some newsreaders will not translate HTML and will make the post unreadable to people using those news clients.  HTML also needlessly increases the size of the post and wastes bandwidth.

What should my post say?

Most of the folks that participate in the newsgroup are very good at tracing spam;  however, we tend to be very bad at mind reading.  Do you need assistance in tracing the source of a spam? Do you have a kill you want to report?  Just seeking general information? Let us know the reason for your post and we will be glad to help.

What do you mean by having a kill posted?

Spam-Killer has its own kill board.  Authenticated kills which are reported are listed on the Kill Board under the name of the person reporting the kill.  The board is located at http://home.att.net/~spamkiller/

Someone posted a spam source, but I disagree. What's up?

We are all here for a common purpose: to fight spam. Advice is gladly given, but remember that everyone responding to your post is just another user. There are varying levels of experience here. If you disagree with the results someone posts, politely post your own results and ask how the other answer was obtained. Everyone may learn something. If you don't understand the answer you get, ask for further information.

I am new here, what else should I do before I post?

Do your homework. There are many reference site available to help you to understand terminology and tactics. Use them. No one minds lending a hand in tracing a spam. If posters continually fails to do even the most basic footwork themselves, other people tend to start ignoring their help requests.
