Nashville-based, Chicago-born Doug Hoekstra has been toiling in the singer-songwriter vineyard for a decade now, but made a strong impression on his first British visit earlier this year.  He sings in  a voice full of whisparing intimacy, but musically is much more robust, creating a tasty Americana stew of folk, country, rock and gospel influences.  "Birmingham Jail" and the lovely "Desdemona" are the stand-out songs, but all 15 tracks are characterised by their strong story-telling quality, as you would expect from a man whose first book of fiction is just about to be published.
