In addition to harboring the musical muse, Hoekstra is an avid fiction fan and prose writer. He cites Charles Bukowski, Dashiell Hammet, D.H. Lawrence, Larry Brown, Molly Hoekstra, and Mr. Faulkner (above) among his favorite writers. Doug's prose work has appeared in a number of literary journals and mags, including Flyin' Shoes, The Maverick Press, Bouillabaisse, Cake, The Canopic Jar, On the Tracks, Parallel Picnics, Palo Alto Review, The Belmont Literary Journal, Threshold (DePaul University), Elysian Fields Quarterly, Spitball and The Minneapolis Review of Baseball. He has a B.A. in English/Creative Writing from DePaul University in Chicago and a M.Ed. in English/Education from Belmont University in Nashville.
Hoekstra is currently working on two book-length projects, a non-fiction tome working titled Hard Boiled-Heroes and Renegade Romantics and a collection of Claim Check Stories. Samples of Doug's work are listed below - click on the link and read/listen away!
