Doug Hoekstra - The Past is Never Past (Inbetweens Rec / Import)  *** 1/2

No longer fresh off the presses, but certainly still interesting: Doug Hoekstra hails originally from Chicago, but has lived in Nashville for awhile, where he definitely belongs more to the art-group scene centered around Lambchop & Co., than to the pure songwriter’s ethic of the Bluebird Café, let alone Big Country-Bizz. His hushed singing provides versatile contrast throughout the Past is Never Past, not only to the emphatic voices of the female singers in the title song and throughout this "leftovers" album, but also to the loop-beats , an effect that’s pushed to its limits on "If the World Was Blind". Ever versatile, his arrangement skills present traditional Twang in a new way ("Where I worked"), and his songs sometimes even develop pop-qualities ("Break My Fall").  Colleagues have drawn comparisons for Hoekstra from Beck to Leonard Cohen. My proposal: Forget comparisons, listen to this record. *** 1/2 - Joerg Feyer

Nicht mehr ganz frisch aus der Platenpresse, doch gewiss noch von Interesse: Doug Hoekstra kommt eigentlich aus Chicago, lebt aber seit einiger Zeit in Nashville, wo er definitiv eher der Art-Gemeinde um Lambchop und Co. zuzurechnen ist als der puren Songwriter-Ethik des Bluebird Café, zu schweigen vom Big Country-Bizz. Sein verhuschter (Sprech-) Gesang kontrastiert auf dem jungsten Leftovers-Album, The Past is Never Past nicht nur im Titelsong geschickt mit emphatischeren Frauenstimmen, gelegentlich auch Loop-Beats – ein Effekt, der auf "If the World Was Blind" fast uberstrapaziert wird. Bei aller Kunstfertigkeit der Arrangements, die auch traditionellen Twang ("Where I Worked") neu verortet, entwickeln seine Songs zuweilen sogar Pop Qualitaten ("Break My Fall"). Kolegen hatten fur Hoekstra Vergleiche von Beck, bis Leonard Cohen parat. Tipp: Vergleiche vergessen, Platte horen. *** 1/2
