NEW YORK POWER POP (August 6, 2001) -Artist: Doug Hoekstra -Title: Around the Margins -Label: Inbetween Records / www.uah.de/inbetweens) -For fans of: Go-Betweens, Triffids, Folk, Beck, Nick Drake, Elliott Smith Doug Hoekstra was born in Chicago but is based for some years in Nashville. Although he lives in the heart of country music, his fourth album is open to a lot of influences. The second track of "Around the Margins"sounds like the good old Go-Betweens surrounded by the Triffids. "Birmingham Jail" shows a touching mixture of Folk, Soul and Gospel. When you are in Jail you need a lot of Soul! "Houses Flying" proves that Doug is also into modern sounds. Just listen to the dancy beats he used in this song. "Broken Town" comes a long with a touch of Reggae. In a couple of songs Doug is accompanied by the lovely voices of former Fisk Jubilee singers Antonio Meeks and Nirva Dorsaint. What holds this variety of styles together is Doug's very introspective voice that draws references to Elliott Smith and Nick Drake. (Robert Pally) Best Track(s): "Lost Among Ruins", "Thats Where he was Living", "Desdemona", "Black and White Memories" Return to Press |
