LEICESTER BANGS (Leicester UK) (August 2001)
Doug Hoekstra - Around The Margins (Inbetweens) by Rob Forbes
Nashville based Doug Hoekstra's fourth release is an intimate, touchingly restrained
collection of story songs, delivered in his trademark wizened whisper. As before, he
touches on themes usually left untroubled - giving up smoking cannot be considered typical
rock 'n' roll fare, and when he wanders into more familiar territory, he sensibly takes
the listener via a few unexpected diversions. Musically, Around The Margins
is unexpectedly muscular - drums, bass and electric guitar are ever present, and there are
regular guest appearances from keyboards and assorted string instruments. The fullness of
the band sound makes a pleasing contrast to Hoekstra's discreet vocals. I note with
interest that Hoekstra will soon be a published author - a logical progression for this
accomplished storyteller.
